Diaspora is finally in the publication queue at Hosted Games! For those of you who aren’t familiar with this game, it’s a project I started with my friend Vince about… ten years ago. At the time, it was my first interactive fiction, and in some very important ways, it still is. Most of the writing on it was done from 2016-2021 or so, but the last parts ended up taking us much, much longer than they should have.

Regardless, though, it’s now finished, and to those of you who’ve been around a while and waited so patiently for this project, thank you. It means the world that you’ve believed in us for so long, and we’re so happy that you’ll soon finally be able to play the complete game, which will be a lot like you might remember, but with some edits that will hopefully improve the quality of the experience. It’s certainly an ‘early work’ in a lot of ways, but there are things about it that I’m very proud of, too.

You can wishlist Diaspora on Steam here, which would be a big help, and if you’d like to learn a little more about the game, I’ve added some information to my pinned post, or you can check out the ancient forum thread here, or our (now largely defunct, but perhaps good for a browse) tumblr blog for the game here. Currently, the release date is set to 6 August (2026), and I don't expect that to change, but I won't call it certain until it's actually happened.

Demo update: July 21, 2026

Wow, it's been a minute -- much longer than I meant it to be -- but I'm not dead! This one adds the next half of chapter 4, adding just under 40k more words too the story. We're getting into the thick of it now :-)

Excuse the rant, I'm procrastinating:

I know so many young people who say they can't cook because it's so complicated.

And it's complicated because you watch this shit on youtube and tiktok where people show you literally only the things they are doing correct. They didn't show you the six failed attempts that ended up in the garbage. Alternatively, you stumble on the health bros and almond fruitcakes who will make you terrified of everything on the grocery store shelves, but then reassure you that it's okay as long as you buy their "detox" supplement.

The worst thing we did for the home kitchen was allow influencers to get their hands on it.

Here's what you NEED to know:

Every meal boils down to three things: a vegetable, a starch, and a protein.

Can you learn a recipe and throw everything together into a casserole to cosplay like you're in the 50s? Yes, absolutely.

You can also just cook those three things completely independent from each other and eat them like that. If you're a literal meat and potatoes kind of person, cool. Throw them in the same dish and cook them together.

"But spices"

Buy a handful of spice mixtures that cover your bases. Most of them will even tell you how to use them. And if all else fails fucking google it.

There is literally nothing in the kitchen that should scare you. Sure, failure can be kind of expensive sometimes, but as long as you don't completely reduce it to ash, at worst it's just gonna taste bad. Take notes, figure out what you don't like about it, and adjust it for next time.

(Sorry this rant occurred to me as I was standing at my stove throwing my pantry leftovers into a pot. Did I have a plan? No. Did I end up with a reasonably tasty pasta dish I threw together with left over noodles, cream, a can of tomatoes, and some basic ass herbs? Yes. Does it look a little like vomit? Yes. Do I care? Not as long as I don't have to go shopping for the next day or two.)

SEVEN DAYS. SIX FAMILY MEMBERS. ONE WAY OUT.

Thursday begins with a crying baby, a missing school shoe and coffee you do not have time to finish. Your partner leaves for work with the nine-month-old, the older children head to school, and you join the morning rush through Manhattan. It should have been an ordinary day.

By lunchtime, the dead are getting back up.

Your family is scattered across New York when the outbreak begins. Your partner and baby are trapped near Midtown, your thirteen-year-old is in the East Village, the younger children are stranded on the Lower East Side and every route between them is filling with frightened people and the newly infected. Then the authorities close every bridge and tunnel leaving Manhattan.

Finding your family is only the beginning. Six people need food, clean water, medicine, somewhere safe to sleep and enough nappies and formula to keep a baby alive. The infected turn within minutes, push their bodies far beyond normal human limits and refuse to remain as predictable as everybody first assumes.

You have seven days to get your partner and four children out of New York City. Every person you stop to help costs time, everything you carry adds weight and every escape route risks placing the people you love in a different kind of danger.

Can you keep all six members of your family alive long enough to leave Manhattan, or will the city take somebody before the seventh day arrives?

Key Features:

Play as a man, woman or nonbinary parent, choose your age from twenty-eight to sixty and customise your name, appearance and parental title.

Create your partner and four children, including their names, genders, nicknames and appearances. Choose every detail yourself or allow the children to inherit a believable mixture of both parents' features.

Choose one of five professions: emergency medicine resident, National Guard soldier, firefighter-paramedic, subway maintenance engineer or public-school teacher. Your training, workplace and equipment open different choices and escape routes.

Manage a real inventory containing food, water, medicine, weapons, tools, baby supplies and profession-specific equipment.

Watch the clock. Travelling, searching, helping strangers and making mistakes all consume time while Manhattan becomes more dangerous around you.

Raise survival skills such as Combat, Medicine, Athletics, Ingenuity, Influence and Nerve, while your behaviour shapes Empathy, Caution and Cooperation.

Protect your relationship with your partner and the trust holding your family together. The children are thirteen, eight, five and nine months old; each one understands and reacts to the outbreak differently.

Discover the rules of the infection through experience. What you learn about turning, strength, senses, decomposition and intelligence may decide who survives later.

Choose who you help, who you leave behind and how far you are willing to go when protecting your family conflicts with protecting everybody else.

Plan your own way out of Manhattan. A nearby bridge, the river, an organised professional convoy or temporary shelter may save the family, or trap them.

Okay, I was originally going to wait a full week before releasing 7 Days to the public.

That was the plan.

Unfortunately, I have absolutely no patience.

I kept telling myself to wait, let the Patreon release breathe for a little while, and be sensible about it, but I genuinely could not wait any longer. I need honest opinions on the game, especially while it is still early enough for me to improve things, fix anything that is not working, and figure out what people actually enjoy about it.

Not only that, but I, also just realised that I have officially crossed 1,000 followers on here, which is honestly a little difficult for me to believe.

So, I have decided to use this release as a celebration. Thank you to everyone who has followed me, played my work, sent an ask, left feedback, reblogged a post, or quietly kept up with my projects. I appreciate every single one of you.

Some notes about the author

First of all, I want to apologize for the delay. I hate not meeting deadlines, but I'm pretty happy I managed to keep a good editing rhythm even when life was… lifeing.

Getting sick, writing a thesis, being an intern... add all of that to a perfectionist who spends hours agonizing over a single paragraph, and you get a delayed passion project 😅

Some notes about the story

In some parts, this chapter is heavier on descriptions than the rest of the story will be, so some scenes might have fewer choices than usual.

Don't worry, it will balance out as we go, pinky promise 🩵

And yes, you read it right; this is the full chapter one. I decided to release the whole of chapter one in one go and push the RO reunions to chapter two instead.

What's changed:

Chapter 2 is Day 1, Part 2, the afternoon after the coupling. It's a single, continuous scene: all ten islanders, one sofa, one game of Never Have I Ever that runs for the rest of the day.

What happens:

The coupling's done. Izzie has an idea.

Never Have I Ever starts as a warmup and becomes something else entirely, ten rounds that get progressively harder to answer, covering drunk texts, old exes, blocking and unblocking, being engaged, cheating, stringing someone along, and staying too long.

Your MC gets a turn. You choose the prompt, and six distinct options shape what the second half of the game becomes.

Every round is a choice: drink boldly, drink quietly, drink and laugh, or don't drink at all. A few round have the option to not drink when you should, but know that will have consequences later down the line.

Word count:

78k words total. As with Chapter 1, individual playthroughs are a fraction of that, as the word count reflects the branching across ten rounds, six different MC prompts, every islander's individual reactions, and the quiet accumulation of things that will matter later.

A note on this chapter:

Chapter 2 is quieter than Chapter 1, as it's one location, no new arrivals, no ceremony. What it is instead is a room of ten people becoming, gradually, something other than strangers. The game is the vehicle. What it makes is the point.

Game Summary:

Welcome to Summer of Love. You and nine other singles will enter a luxury villa and couple up, spending a month in each other’s company, along with a few extras along the way – you’ll live together, eat together, sleep together, and hopefully, fall in love together. Sound familiar? Thought so – but instead of coupling ceremonies being split by boys and girls as is typical in shows like these, the public will be the ones deciding the order of who gets to pick, and as the cast is an all-bi one, you can pick whoever you like, so long as they haven’t already been picked. At the end of the month, the most popular couple will win £500,000. As for the other couples? As there are no dumpings, everyone has the potential to find love, and those in exclusive relationships by the end could also win £100,000 per couple. Ready for your summer of love to begin?
