“INTERSTELLAR” FILM OF THE DECADE
Film of the decade. When I think about a cultural thought such as “film of the decade”, I get chills. I think about film a lot whether I see a production on screen or developing a story from an idea. I like keeping my tools sharp, i.e. film tools. I love film that I’m writing this up which was something I always wanted to do so here I am.
In this case, there’s a lot to think about because it’s 10 years and in those 10 a lot has be pushed out to the screen. It puts you in a position where you can’t be off track. The film of the decade. I’ve been thinking about this for about two years, to be honest. By the 8 of 10 years, you have a good indication on what’s gonna be the film. I thought of four and I think I’m spot on.
Now, what is considered the film of the decade? If we’re talking about only financial success and its significance driven from it then it’s probably one of those bullshit-ass Marvel films. Don’t get me wrong, some blockbusters are actually great even in this film climate but that’s not enough. All this money being invested and profited, but what are you saying? What is being remembered? What is it about your film that’s going to be hailed as the best out of 10 years? Just thinking about what makes a film great in the first place is a subject all to itself.
I honestly feel that Interstellar is the film of the decade. I’m not even a sci-fi head. I thought about it, I browsed through a list of 10 years of great filmmaking and it’s hard to really choose. I had four choices and I wish they can all be shared but Interstellar always comes through. The film not entertains but communicates. A part from being directed by the great Christopher Nolan with a huge budget, a great production and A LOT of scientific research done (where some papers where published) so every frame you see anything about science/physics is legit. I can look back in the 2010s and say Interstellar is the film of the decade. To simplify my reasoning, the film is about a man who uses all technological and human resources to not only try to save the human race but to re-connect with his daughter and that’s all that really matters. That’s all a motivation, a push, that a character needs. Sure, it’s great to save humans from our own extinction but it’s only sweeter if you’re loved ones are among the living. The main character breaks all the rules of physics so he can get through to his daughter, to validate fatherhood per-se. It’s the kind of film that engraves hope, union and doesn’t shy away from the subtle horrors of reality. What a great achievement a human being can accomplish or even try to, especially in fiction. The heart of the film is us humans, the willingness to take action and the film does very that. The human heart does things, we know the feelings of love, betrayal, anger; and how it makes us perform, how it affects the brain as to how we live through the day. Since the beginning of man (either through God or science), we always wondered about what’s beyond the stars and the planets and what it can take to simply discover. But to whom do we share those thoughts? Our peers. Our loved ones. We hand our thoughts to the people who could relate and then some. All that curiosity stems from the heart and sometimes the heart is subject to get hurt and possibly torn apart. We see the heart though pressure, constantly in Interstellar in the philosophical questions asked about life and death and its consequences given by the choices based on. All of our advancements in technology always pertained to communication especially among human interaction. Look at your phone and think of all the things it can do even without internet. All the communication in your fingertips and we all rage when we don’t have it. A lost phone will have us on edge. The only thing we truly have on Earth is our human communication and the love we have that can makes us do things for the greater good and the devices we use to achieve it and it makes us satisfied when used especially if a loved one wants to see you smile rather than hear about it. The height of it all is we will do anything for love, its discovery and constant validation. That’s all we look for in life. Some people write films about it and Interstellar does just that. It’s the film that ultimately carries human vulnerabilities, questions our decisions sometimes opposing logic; it does it.
Also, this film probably has the most creative & realistic plot compared to the thousands of films produced in the last 10 years. Name another film where you can legitimately say, “this film world can exist” and Insterstellar is it.
