Carrie being skinny in every adaptation is like how Heathcliff is white in most of his. Directors somehow cut out the most important part of their characters, the reason why they have been subjected to such prejudice and why they are the way they are. Why THE BOOKS GO THE WAY THEY DO. Do you think Heathcliff would have been so outcasted and forbidden to be with Catherine if he was white? Do you think Carrie would have been relentlessly bullied and borderline tortured by her peers if she was skinny and pretty?
İ loved being neglected as a child…………
so much time for research

you can acknowledge children are at a more vulnerable stage developmentally while still believing they deserve autonomy.
this is also how you can differentiate youth liberation from encouraging predatory behavior. yes, there's a lot of misinformation on development, such as the 'frontal lobe fully develops at 25' thing, that doesn't mean a 25 year old and a 5 year old are in the same place developmentally. I will raise an eyebrow at anyone who is very insistent that young children and adults are identical. I don't even understand how you could unironically believe this (that is, without ulterior motives) when developmental trauma exists and presents the way it does.
young children are not identical to adults, and this does not mean they deserve to be treated as a lesser form of human, if anything it means we should be more careful in how we approach their needs.
as a child who'd been like. Adultified by the adults around me for being "so mature for my age" (not speaking up when i needed/wanted anything, being smarter than my peers despite developmental issues) Yeah people DO NOT need to be fucking treating children like adults. the person that most frequently told me i was So Mature was my emotionally incestuous mom who constantly tries to use me for her own comfort/gain. its a form of grooming to talk to children like that
however, yes, children deserve the same human rights as adults. children deserve to be treated with respect, humanity, and kindness and patience. they should not be treated as on the level of a peer as an adult, but they should be treated with the same respect you would treat a peer. just because children should be treated as Their Age doesn't mean they should be dehumanized or have their autonomy stripped away
yeah there's something to be said about how society actually praises what is often developmentally inappropriate maturity from children because it's more "obedient".

I’ve watched a lot of vintage horror movie adaptations of vintage books I’ve read so this problem isn’t new, but I’d say The Exorcist and Rosemary’s Baby are the closest to being the most accurate which I think is because the overall message doesn’t have to go against typical Christian values or the assumed purity of motherhood. for a lot of adaptations it’s just pure misogyny like Frankenstein can be whatever the story needs in an antihero but god forbid Justin mortiz not be Frankenstein’s sexy mistress in the hammer horror version or god forbid the new one doesnt have a clear person to root for (at least enough people read Frankenstein to know this isn’t the book)
why people on the internetdo a shouting? small letter, small voice, small baby bird. thank u

wanted to draw their outfits exclusive to the book but I need to figure out Chris’ hostess dress first….
RRRRRFFRFR WOOF WOOF WOOF DAMIEN WITH DARKER SKIN AS HES DESCRIBED IN THE BOOKS!!?!!!!!!!!!!
YES
(though I guess you can argue he was described like that in the book because Americans didn’t know what race to categorize Greek people at the time like Italians. My city now.)
Something about the bastardization of the story time and time again proves that nobody in power really cares about the people who would resonate with King’s Carrie White. A girl so ugly and repulsive she’s been removed from her own story. The societal need for women and girls to be constantly perceived as attractive is what fuels a fair amount of her torment in the book, but that person isn’t even allowed to exist on the screen. We cannot empathize with her; it isn’t allowed. It’s fascinating to me.
The Tube Post has been updated for 2026! Endless thanks to @andstuffsketches for the amazing art (!!!), @rowenabean for checking this over for me (all remaining mistakes are my own), @kelpforestdwellers for extra tips, and @appleyblam for an editing pass. Thank you all!

given Blatty’s track record as an author, I think it was definitely accidental that he hit the nail on the head with regan not being put in dangerous situations because she was exposed to an outside world full of seedy men, but a demon who befriended her in her house and sometimes styled his voice after Chris’ closest friend, Burke, who as a person was fucked up, but he was charismatic and had Hollywood energy, so people still liked him and Chris let him bully her butler and people treated his shittiness as an inoffensive character quirk even though he destroyed an entire room once in a temper tantrum. This is not an ad for the exorcist novel being progressive though. It was so close to saying something about Burke and Chris and then it did not
I fear we will never get a book accurate Carrie White because an unattractive teenage girl is far too monstrous of a concept for the general audience to sympathize with.
various tv, film, and theater producers for the last 50 years smacking themselves in the forehead like fuuuuck how can we make it easy to understand why carrie is alienated from her peers and callously bullied at school WITHOUT making her a hideous fatass like in the book
people are only mad now because Mike Flanagan is adapting a book about abuse and misogyny that many people have read or watched a movie of, but I have been hating his adaptations from the start because I read those previous books that had child abuse and misogyny in the family and unmarried women who weren’t considered perfect or beautiful enough to be cared for even in the end, and I watched in horror as they were changed to be about familial love and forgiveness and marriage followed by “I didn’t read the book but this was really good” type reviews coming out and the general conversations shifting towards messages of family as safety instead acknowledging what the book was able to do in horror, reminding readers that they are places were mistreatment and silent suffering can happen. asinine
