South Asia is witnessing scorching heat waves, with temperatures in Bangladesh, Pakistan, and India regularly surpassing 110 degrees Fahrenh
From the article:
In South Asia, heat weaves already claim more than 200,000 lives annually. According to a recent study, as temperature rises, the death toll might exceed 400,000 by 2045. India is at high risk. The study further reveals that over 200,000 deaths are currently attributed to severe temperatures, and this figure may nearly quadruple over the next twenty years. With deaths increasing and governments lacking strategies to protect laborers from dying, vulnerable workers across South Asia are demanding their governments provide heat wave protections.
Ashok Kumar, forty-two, a migrant worker from India’s Bihar state, has been running a barber shop on a footpath with no roof in India’s national capital, New Delhi, where temperatures exceed to 46 degrees Celsius (114.8 degrees Fahrenheit). With no shaded resting area, Kumar spends nine hours a day in a scorching heat to support his family. “Where shall I go? I have to feed my family. The government cannot install air conditioning at the roadside for us. We are dying under the blazing sun. We have no options. If we stop work, our families will die hungry,” Kumar told me. [...]
While knowing risk factors, many migrant laborers are unable to do much more than cover their heads with wet towels. “We saw how the laborer Paswan collapsed and died in India’s Nuh grain market. I can’t forget. I am working in the same market and at the same temperature. Covering my head with a wet towel gives relief. But no guarantee of life,” says Narayan Kumar, forty, a migrant worker. [...]
Anamika Barua, a South Asia–based professor and an expert on climate change and water security, told me that outdoor laborers are among the worst affected, because their livelihoods depend on continuous physical work under direct exposure to extreme heat, often without adequate shade, hydration, cooling facilities, or social protection. [...] She stressed that the poorest communities are most at risk even though they contribute the least to global emissions.

That's how you show real solidarity!
"After they overheard that ICE was at the courthouse to arrest someone, they improperly accessed court databases to determine who was not born in the United States," a DOJ detention filing says. "They then snuck every suspected illegal alien who was at the courthouse out a back door, where ICE, who was waiting in the parking lot for their target to leave the building, could not see them."

nobody talks about how exhausting it is to live in that space between "things will get better" and "i can't handle this anymore." it's like your emotions are constantly swinging. leaving you both hopeful and defeated in the same day.
Rubio report on Cuban subversion names Zohran Mamdani, Amy Goodman, Hasan Piker + orgs like DSA and Amazon Labor Union
“Many of the most significant upheavals in recent American political history — from the George Floyd riots to the rise of Antifa to the explosion of pro-terrorist activism on American college campuses — can be linked, in some way, shape, or form, to Cuban influence,” the report says.
As for who these supposed agents of Cuban influence are, the report is remarkably explicit. It names people like Ben Cohen (of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream fame), Mayors Zohran Mamdani and Karen Bass, media figures like Amy Goodman and Hasan Piker, and organizations like the Democratic Socialists of America and the Amazon Labor Union.
The implication is clear: Secretary of State Marco Rubio thinks there should be a modern-day blacklist of the political left in America. In fact, the report explicitly mentions the “blacklists, McCarthy-era investigations and prosecutions” of the 1950s and their effectiveness at dismembering the Communist Party USA.
The 100-page report, titled “Cuba: The Capital of 21st Century Communism,” was released this morning.
oh so we really are just repackaging the 'judeo-bolshevism' conspiracy but for Latinos and Muslims, awesome
in all seriousness though this is a terrifying escalation in rhetoric, and frankly, i would call it genocidal language being aimed at Cubans in particular, but Latin America more broadly.
Israeli banks are planning to end services to Palestinian banks in the West Bank. They are the only means by which Palestinians in the West Bank can receive and transfer money internationally, and they also provide the system through which many Palestinians are paid. This is a disaster in the making.
Israeli banks have informed their Palestinian counterparts that they intend to end critical banking services within weeks, Israeli and Pales

"Are you saying we should just allow people to have bad and scary thoughts and feelings??? And talk about them openly??" Yes. Yes I am. Your need to forcibly correct other people's thoughts and feelings into something more palatable and punishing them if they refuse to hide them is FAR more toxic than the hypothetical suicide joke you're getting mad about
i set my name to Paul Enis in the app because then the stickers they put on my grocery deliveries would say P. ENIS. it was like this for months, but now all the sudden they say PAUL E. instead
i can't have that. i won't let that happen. what they could have never predicted is that a beautiful woman named Peni Sausage is about to log on
I don't think this is an appropriate response to an article about South Asian farmers losing their teeth because temperatures are now reaching 45 Celcius.
The average Tumblr blogger has such poor manners that even a pig would be embarrassed to bring them home to its mother.
After I suspected a climate connection to tooth decay, I conducted systematic saliva pH testing across my patient population and documented
okay so i think i found the article op's (and me in my tags) talking about. being exposed to over 40 celsius (120 farenheit or so) for the whole day means youre sweating a LOT (the article says rashid- the farmer at the centre of the text- drinks around 17 liters a Day. humans usually only need 3, so i presume the rest is mostly used for sweat). so much so that the organizm reroutes water from other parts of itself to not die of heatstroke - salivary glands included, which means that 1. they have very little saliva in comparison to a healthy human being 2. what little their bodies DO produce is incredibly acidic, falling to ~5.5 ph from the ideal of 7ph. Teeth dissolve. Quickly. There's a mention of someone losing 8 teeth in two years
im not reading the whole article now (headache -_-), but later on the author of the article says about 30 million people (employed in agriculture) are at risk for extreme dental health problems. 30 million people at risk of not being able to eat solid food. 30 million people at risk of not being able to find work. being able to marry. being able to be part of their community. being able to speak clearly
this is. fucking horrible feels like an understatement, but it is the best i have. this exceptionally, terribly inhumane, and the pakistan goverment's lack of a plan to adress this is embarassing
I'm not reading whatever Americans and Europeans say in good faith because you people are dipshits who constantly think people in the Global South as lesser everyday
Shut the fuck up with you "let's all be niceys" fuck you in particular
what are we grieving and upset about in particular? everyone in a climate lit class knows climate change is real, the point of climate literature is to turn that into art that will get read by other people. truthfully from that perspective it does in fact "fuck severely" to find an article about something visceral and visually cool happening when all you want to have is a cool dystopian premise and get the best grades :)
this kind of voyeurism is not autistic-coded or whatever, its the premise on which much of the art world functions re: other people's lives and the instrumentalising of it. there's awful genocide literature about the holocaust. this attitude just gets magnified and is more common when racism is there to dehumanize the subjects.
btw real life example of you call a bitch racist and suddenly they're autistic accusations.

I think about The Man of the Hole so often. 27 years alone. 27 years with no one to speak to but strangers to wave to. Survived a genocide, a massacre that killed everyone he had ever known and later, an assassination attempt. He still tried to warn researches about the traps he built. He was only about 60 when he died in 2022. The people who tormented him in life later desecrated his grave.
as a regular donor to Gaza Soup Kitchen I get their email updates, and they said today that while they've continued to be able to expand, donations are slowing down as Gaza gets less coverage. If you have a few dollars to spare, I encourage you to send them here to continue the amazing work that Hani and his team are doing.
