did you know that the memoryheads use kimi. in particular instead of the line "Come join the fun." they say "キミも　おいでよ". (source: japanese wiki).

interesting, thank you for the info anon. so they’re basically saying “Come on/you should come too.” hmm, i never thought to check Memoryhead’s lines in Japanese. i just went to look cause i was curious to see the word choice for “us” but from what i can tell it seems they simply dropped that pronoun (since Japanese often does that).

one thing that stuck out to me a little - it seems the equivalent of the line "You'll be with us shortly" in Japanese is more like "We'll be together soon.” basically the same thing but the latter sounds more...sweet and sad, in a way? if that makes sense.

Speaking of that drawing, I’ve always wondered if toby has ever watched full metal alchemist or something. Kinda far fetched I know, but the drawing reminds me of edward’s pocket watch where he has a picture of him, his brother and their mom with don’t forget under it plus the date I think of when they leave their home. If the pic is of the skelefam its pretty much the same except they have their “dad” in the pic instead and there is no date. Idk just airing my thoughts out hahahaha, also someone made a joke manip about that too so it’s an interesting idea

i’ve seen great crossover fanart with that concept! i can’t find it now unfortunately but it’s such a cute idea. i could see that being an intentional reference honestly - Toby Fox does give shout-outs to a lot of different media, there are some anime/manga references in Undertale already, and FMA was a very popular series among teens/young adults when he would have been around that age. we can’t say for sure obviously but i think it’s plausible!

Hi! I haven't seen you address a particular theory so I wanted to ask you... what do you think of that theory that the 3 people in the drawing found in Sans' secret room is actually the three heroes, Kris, Susie, and Ralsei, not the skelefam? Since it only appears when Clam Girl does (who was the one to mention Suzy) a lot of people interpret it this way (with Ralsei being the one to have drawn it). What do you think?

Hello! So I personally do not subscribe to that theory cause it doesn’t jive with a lot of my own ideas about what’s going on - for example, I don’t believe the skelebros came from Deltarune, or that the events of Deltarune occur before/lead into Undertale.

Even aside from that, it would just make more sense to me for it to be his family. It’s in Sans’s basement, which is a hint at Sans’s mysterious backstory, which is very likely tied to Gaster in some way. There are 3 important skeleton characters, and 3 people depicted in the drawing. The figures are smiling, and the skeletons are all associated with smiling due to their permanent grins. It has “don’t forget” which is a phrase that seems to be related to Gaster in some way (like how the song “Don’t Forget” has a bunch of hints at being connected to him)

Given all the above, I would be a little surprised if it turns out the picture is the Fun Gang, who as far as we know at this point don’t seem to have any special connection to Sans. Of course that could well change over the course of Deltarune, but just using the info we’ve been presented with so far, it’s not the interpretation I find to be the most believable one.

I can totally understand why people came to that conclusion, since like you said it appears after Clam Girl mentions Suzy. However I don’t take that to mean Susie is in the drawing - I think it happens then because that was one of the earliest hints at Deltarune within Undertale, and Deltarune in general is heavily tied to Gaster.

So those are my thoughts on the matter; thank you for asking!

hey I noticed you posted something about the japanese version of the don't forget song but I remember seeing a lets play of the japanese version and the song was in english. did toby also release an official japanese version of the song? (i couldn't find it)

afaik the song only comes in English vocals, but in the Japanese version the lyrics are written in Japanese, so that’s where I got the translation from. I found that in this video (starts around 59:22)

that’s what i wanna know too! it’s one of those unique/strange Papyrus things. like how his room is silent, or how he apparently always wears gloves...i scratch my head thinking about it and it just leaves me with more questions than answers.

yeah that’s what i had assumed too! and i know what you mean about the quotation marks - actually i just looked up some stuff cause it was confusing me

(first one is quotation marks, second is asterisk) i guess in the game they look different from the dialogue dump i was looking at - in fact, its basically the reverse of what they look like in the text dump? huh. yup it could just be the blockiness of his font making stuff look weird 

i still find it a little odd the asterisk looks nothing like what it should but the asterisk being weird probably doesnt mean anything...i’m still left wondering what’s up with Papyrus and asterisks though

so...basically just a normal looking asterisk. but here’s what the asterisk is like written in Papyrus’s font in Undertale:

its not a star but a rectangle? the font used in Undertale isnt exactly the same as the papyrus font in say, Microsoft Word but for the most part it’s close. it’s odd how different this particular thing looks

Papyrus actually does use an asterisk a few times in the game - before his Undernet posts, in the signs on his door, and in a couple others spots

(note: it turns out the text dump i was using seemed to switch the way the quotation marks and asterisk looked in the game weirdly enough? the asterisk looks wonky regardless but i should point that out) did Toby deliberately alter the way the asterisk looks? maybe since Papyrus doesnt use an asterisk like the others, he figured it wouldn’t matter idk. it’s still really weird to me though, why bother changing it in the first place?

i’ve wondered what the purpose behind Papyrus's dialogue not being preceded by an asterisk (unlike all the others characters in UT/DR) and now there’s also this strangeness with his unusual looking asterisk.

could this be another mysterious thing thats somehow connected to Gaster? G(aster), aster means star, (aster)isk contain the word and mean “little star”...does Papyrus lacking a proper asterisk/not using an asterisk relate back to the loss of Gaster?? might be a stretch but i’m just trying to come up with a possible explanation for it..

it’s hard to know for sure but Gaster may not use an asterisk either. so it could be a trait that was ‘inherited’ from him perhaps?? again idk, just spitballing.

Let’s just trust toby . Papyrus is very well-written, deep , complex character and more . I felt toby was kinda disappointed how the fandom treated him . But …… if he really didn’t give papyrus what he deserves….. I’ll fall in endless sadness and depression :’)

Um also, papyrus is important and SUPER IMPORTANT in undertale!!!!

yup, we just have to trust that Toby will do Papyrus justice. he already has a lot of interesting stuff going on with him in Undertale, why else would he be so weird and mysterious if it wasnt planned on being addressed at some point? i'm just tired of Papyrus being treated as a joke, so i hope those interpretations arent given more ammo in Deltarune...

something interesting I noticed in Undertale is the recurring usage of the phrase “the end”

these aren’t the only times the phrase appears but I was looking for places where it’s used in a certain way, referencing what seems to be a specific place?

these lines are from: the Asriel battle; a phone call with Papyrus; Sans’s fight; the last savepoint before the barrier; and messages found throughout the CORE (which I assume were written by Gaster)

Memoryhead is one of the most fascinating mysterious Gaster-related things for me...it’s hard to speculate on them much (other than what i’ve gone over already regarding their connection to Gaster) cause they’re so enigmatic but that wont stop me from trying

one interesting thing about Memoryhead is how they refer to themselves as “us” whereas the other amalgamates use singular forms (I/me/my). despite being composed of many different monsters fused together, the others seem to retain a sense of individuality while MH does not. 

this is especially interesting to me cause i’m not sure that Memoryhead is actually a proper amalgamate. i know they are listed as Amalgamates but i don’t know if they have constituent parts aside from Gaster? maybe they do - like i said, they’re very mysterious so i can’t say for sure what’s going on there. it’s possible pieces of different monsters merged together to make them. 

however if they are simply pieces of Gaster like i assume, it’s odd how they’ve split off into a trio, look like they have multiple faces on their ‘bodies,’ and as i said above, speak of themselves in plural form. a couple of the faces even resemble Sans and Papyrus a little too

perhaps it’s reflective of Gaster’s fractured state of mind as Memoryhead. he’s lost his sense of self. i also wonder if MH is trying to recreate something from its past? they call on you to join the fun, say it’s a real get together...what if they tried to form something like a happy little family, based on their former self’s memories? 

during True Pacifist’s credits, it says the Amalgamates are living together with their families. i love the idea of them going with the skelebros but i kinda wonder if Alphys, Sans, or anyone (except Frisk) even knows about their existence. maybe the family MH is with is its own self? 

another neat detail is how it looks like Memoryhead has a phone + cord held up to their head. maybe something else that was taken from Gaster’s memories. or it could just be because the path to sparing them involves using the phone.

i mentioned this in another post but worth pointing out again - one of their lines, “Lorem ipsum docet” means “Pain itself teaches.” There’s failsafe text in Deltarune which could be a reference to this dialogue (and comes part of a little poem that might be about Mystery Man/Gaster): “The pain itself is reason why.”

in the Japanese version of Deltarune, the ending song uses the first person pronoun “watashi” and the second person pronoun “kimi”...afaik, only a couple major characters in UT/DR use both watashi and kimi - Asgore and Gaster (in entry number seventeen he uses “kimitachi”)

i’ve entertained the idea that “Don’t Forget” could be a lullaby - what if it’s a song Gaster made for Sans or Papyrus cause they were scared of the dark?

now i dont wanna get too excited about this cause who knows, maybe the song could be using watashi to keep it neutral so that it could be seen from multiple perspectives. still interesting to note though.

interesting idea! i do have a theory that Kris might originally be a vessel made by Gaster...so Gaster possibly telling Kris about everything (maybe like how he apparently talked to Jevil tho in that case it had a negative impact on the poor jester) could align with that, if he wanted Kris to be in the know of whatever his plan is

i’m so curious who the narrator in Deltarune is supposed to be…i kinda wonder if maybe it’s still Chara since their speaking style is pretty similar to the narrator of Undertale, plus you get lines like this which seem to reference UT

this sounds like a reference to Papyrus’s sink…but is it meant to indicate the narrator knows about this, or is it just a joke for us players and not supposed to mean the narrator actually knows about his super tall sink from Undertale?? the DR narrator also calls Toriel’s chair “Chairiel” as in UT

then you also get narration like this, which is similar to yet noticeably different from lines in UT

does this mean that the narrator of DR is not Chara but maybe someone who is similar to them?? like Kris? i think it’d be cool if it turned out we were seeing their thoughts all along. 

here for example, that first choice definitely sounds like Kris’s own feelings about reading the anime review - it’s funny cause usually the “Yes” choice is on the left side while here it’s the other way around, they really didnt want to read Alphys’s thoughts on Mew Mew Kissy Cutie 2. (yet the player can make them read the review anyway…truly we are the real monsters)

also just remembered a couple interesting points - when chatting with Sans, the topics include "My Mom" and "My Teacher"...so that definitely comes from Kris’s perspective specifically. perhaps it’s because it would be confusing if it said “Your Mom/Teacher” but in that case the script could have easily left out the pronoun entirely if keeping it vague was the intention

when you talk to Undyne though, one of the options is “Alphys” - why would Kris even think to bring up Alphys, when they wouldnt/shouldnt know about their connection in Undertale?
