JL: Mama They Might Be Giants?!

Mama: Yes!

JL: It's been so long!

Mama: I'm calling from a Louisiana state penitentiary.

JL: Well that explains... everything.

Mama: I know. I got arrested. It's so baaad.

Mama: I hear that you're in Williamsburg, you know.

JL: Yeah, we're actually doing a show right now we're—we're, um...

Mama: Oh, I know. I know. They're piping it—

JL: ...doing a live show.

Mama: They're piping it in to the penitentiary.

JL: So you knew that when you called, that we were actually on stage.

Mama: Yes, yes. No, I knew. I couldn't—

JL: In the middle of interrupting a show, you knew that.

Mama: It's like Gitmo here. They're trying to drive us crazy, and they chose your music.

JL: Yes.

Mama: Hey, hey, you want—you wanna—you wanna hear a riddle?

JL: Yeah, I was hoping you would... I was hoping you were gonna ask me that. Yes, I do.

Mama: All right. It's kind of a trick one, so I hope you're prepared. Oh, I—I'm sorry I got distracted, I—I just got this iPad Mini, and... I was wondering if you could help me. I can't figure out how to get on Yahoo. I keep on typing in "Yahoo" to iTunes... and it just gives me songs. Hey John, so—

JL: Yes.

Mama: How many Supreme Court justices does it take to be on the wrong side of history?

JL: Um, I don't know if I know the answer to that. Um, how many?

Mama: Five! [pause] Get it?

JL: Yes, I do. Five.

Mama: Yeah, it just—that's why I said it's a trick—it's a trick riddle. 'Cause it's true.

JL: Yes. 'Cause it's—the answer's so simple.

Mama: Yeah. The answer's a fact.

Mama: Hey listen, I've got a request. Can you guys send me a shiv? I gotta go.

I've seen people on here ask your reaction to Weird Al's "Everything You Know Is Wrong" but have you also heard the Paul and Storm track "If They Might Be Giants Were The Ice Cream Man?"

JF: I just saw that posted but I didn't listen. I love Al and Paul and Storm and I know normal people would just say it's flattering, but I have a very neurotic problem where I can't think about other folks reflecting on us. I'm messed up that way.

A rare and special thing happened at NYC's Bowery Ballroom on November 23, 2000 and as far as I know it never happened before or since. They opened with their improvised instrumental known as Masshole and as soon as the Johns came out, Flansburgh started banging on the keyboard while Linnell picked up the Chessmaster guitar and proceeded to noodle. 😲

I shot a video of this spectacle from the balcony with the lowres floppy-loaded Mavica, but of course that was the one disk that was somehow corrupted when I got it home. 😭 All I have to offer you is the video that I shot immediately after, in which you can see Linnell pretending to toss the guitar to Flans before handing it off. 😆

Like I said, I was in the balcony for once at this show, but here's a photo taken by somebody in my usual spot. As you can see, he's holding it upside-down and using the mic stand as a slide (!) 🙌
