My personal experience with being asked this question and then given that line, is that the neurotypical person expected you to feel shame. I have some slightly less anecdotal evidence to back up this anecdotal experience. I took substitute teacher training once, and we were told that the best thing to do with middle schoolers "acting up," was to shame them, to figure out how to draw attention to them and this negative attention in front of their peers would shame them into good behaviour, or at least silence. I raised my hand, having already distinguished myself as the "weirdo" of the group, and said, "Is this the reason I spent a lot of time in the principal's office for truthfully, loudly, and clearly answering questions like, 'would you care to share your thoughts with the class?'" And was told yes, that was a perfect example, but I was the rare case where it backfires.
Since then, I have responded to that type of question with, "Do you want an explanation, or was your intent simply to indicate that I need to feel inferior, right now?" and it does tend to turn the tables a little bit.
in theory the difference between reason and excuse is "this is why it happened" vs "this is why it doesn't count"
but nobody really uses it like that, they just mean "you need to feel inferior"
to someone who wants to blame you for a thing, explaining the process that naturally lead you to do the thing sounds like you're trying to justify doing the thing.
to be fair, it DOES explain and possibly even justify you doing the thing, but they dont want to understand they just want you to know not to do it again and dont think 'okay faitr but dont do it again' is a response for... reasons?

One of the many reasons this movie is a masterpiece is that Joe Wright allowed for happy accidents like this. It's difficult for me to think of other films that have such rich background action or subtle reaction shots as this one. Instead of concentrating only on dialogue, he keeps the cameras running long enough to pick up all the nonverbal acting, and then actually USED it in the final edit. DIRECTORS DON'T DO THAT ANY MORE.

wherever this is y'all should just start saying random words like they were slang. Every time they ban some of your made up words, make up a few more. Let them ban ten words at once and come in using ten more the very next day. Really make a game out of driving them nuts
Just walk around saying shit like "That's so blizzy. I dig the dharma. Get sippy with it, homeswizzle."
Literally make the slang you want be "insert random word" so that any random word can be the term and you pick it up from context. "Holy shine-button, that flicks bee-butts my grizbaby. Very dealt of you." Make them ban the entire dictionary.
I hope somebody from there saw this and is doing it. My whole family excels in this kind of rebellion, btw.
I spent one single year in a private high school, and they had a dress code, and the dress code said t-shirts must be a solid color and have a pocket.
Now i didn't mind solid color t-shirts, but i hated how the shirts with a pocket looked. So after failing to get away with wearing pocketless shirts... I borrowed a sewing machine and made a solid colored t-shirt with a pocket over the belly button like a silly little kangaroo. Facing the principle the next day, i pointed out that the student handbook clearly stated that all t-shirts must have a pocket. I asked him if my shirt had a pocket. I asked him to show me where the rules detailed the location on the shirt that a pocket must be. It was a private school so they simply suspended me for a day (which went on my record) and when i got back the student handbooks had all been reprinted with a sentence added to it specifying that t-shirts must have a breast pocket on the left side of the chest. Being the cause of a whole new student handbook edition gained me a small amount of notoriety, but i was so low on the social totem pole at that school that it didn't do much for me.
The next Monday, i showed up with a t-shirt entirely covered in pockets, front and back. In the principle's office again, I asked him if my shirt had a pocket on the left side of the chest. I asked him to show me where the rules said there must only be one pocket. I was suspended for a day and the next day there was ANOTHER student handbook reprint, and the school threatened to bill my parents the cost of reprinting all the student handbooks if they didn't get me in line. My parents basically laughed at them but asked me to not make them have to fight my school as they were already short on time and money. So i gave up on that and began amusing myself finding neck ties that met the letter of the dress code but pissed off the administration.
I could tell you a couple more things i've done, but i'd rather tell you what my brother did.
To promote recreational reading in The Youth, my younger brother's public high school instituted a 25 minute "free reading period" in the day. Every student had to spend that time reading. You could read anything, you could even read a magazine, but you had to be reading.
My brother thought the whole thing was a stupid way for the school to spend their time, and especially stupid to be applied to him. Our whole family reads excessively -- when i was in high school i was reading, on average, one entire book every day. My brother was more well adjusted than i, so i'd guess he was only reading 3 or four books a week, tho, while i was reading a lot of fiction with a little philosophy and history, he was reading a lot of, like, theoretical physics.
ANYway, he was like, this is stupid for many reasons, i'm going to sit quietly and use this time to catch up on some of my homework. But the teacher he had during that time period didn't like that and made a big deal out of insisting he actually spend the time reading. He was sent to the principles office, where he explained that he did not need extra reading time, cited studies that indicated the "free reading" time would accomplish nothing and was a waste of time for both the administration and the student body, and ended with a reminder that what he WANTED to do was sit quietly and do school work, which any school should be happy about.
The principle said he understood my brother's position, but that he couldn't make exceptions for a single student. As per the instructions to the whole school, it didn't matter what he read, it could even be unpublished writing, but he had to be reading. My brother, already veteran gamer both on a computer and around a table, immediately saw an exploit and seized this mistake (gods, my family really can be the worst lmao).
He asked the principle to put in writing the rules as stated AND that he would not make an exception for a single student. The principle, not understanding the kind of people we are, gave it to him in writing. At which point his fate was sealed.
So the next day my brother came in with a packet of paper he had printed at home. When the time came for "free reading" he took out his packet and began reading. When the teacher came over to make sure he was reading, she was enraged to discover he had a packet of about 25 pages completely full of the repeated letter "a".
"I'm reading it tho" was his response. "This meets the definition of reading" "No it's just a letter, you can't be reading it unless it's words."
The next day he showed up with pages completely filled with "words words words words." He was sent to the principles office "See, those are words," my brother said, "so i must be reading."
"no that's not reading, there's not a single sentence on these pages" The principle must have been stupid, anyone who ever met someone from our family could have seen what would happen the next day, when he showed up with pages full of "These are words in a sentence." over and over
He was again sent to the principles office. The principle discovered that, like a man with a monkey's paw, he could not define reading in a way that met the rules as stated but would prevent my brother's shenanigans. He tried to insist my brother read from a recognized publisher, but my brother pointed out that this was not the rules as given to the rest of the student body, and the principle could not make an exception for a single student. The principle tried to tell him that he was making an exception for him anyway, and my brother told him that unless he was given an exemption from "free reading" time entirely, he would not recognize any rules that violated the written agreement they had. The principle implied my brother would face consequences for this behavior, and my brother implied he would talk to the local paper about being repeatedly harassed for *checked actual notes* following the rules he had been given, all in an effort to prevent my brother from sitting quietly and doing actual schoolwork.
My brother returned to class shortly thereafter with a note from the principle explaining to the teacher that my brother was exempt from "free reading"
anyway, the moral of this story is, when a rule is ridiculous, you can often find a way to make the authority figures look ridiculous for trying to enforce it.
so again, i hope these kids just start using any and all words in a way that sounds like slang. Start using school-related words as slang "what's up, my exponent? You ready to get absolutely conjugated this weekend? it's gonna be sooo decimal!" Let them ban THAT. Make them pull their hair out trying to avoid admitting the rule they want to make is "don't be cooler than we can understand"

the fixation upon Gomez Addams as a hypothetical "rich to be eaten/guillotined" as opposed to discussions of radicalizing the Addams family into redistributing willingly (which is arguably in character for most adaptations if not all) shows how deep seated the idea of necessary punishment is within modern leftist ideals. In spite of the strength of Gomez's sense of justice, honor, and equality - traits everyone including the jokesters at large unanimously adore him for - the prevailing attitude is one of antagonism and absolutism. Forbes said the Addams family are Rich, so we would need to Kill Them.
Tumblr has simultaneously painted the Addams as a family that would take in anyone, house students and newcomers, generously give their time and money and assets away; and at the same time, claims the resources that allow them to do these things we laud them for make them inherently evil and in need of destruction.
It Says A Lot about how people don't understand that the phrase "eat the rich" is not a call for class genocide, its a warning about what desperate working dogs do when starved and beaten ad infinitum. This is all hypothetical discussion. Gomez Addams, and indeed any "good rich" people, does not actually exist.
But I do find the way we discuss him and his hypothetical wealth very interesting. I'd sooner put Scrooge McDuck against the wall, because he can't be changed. But the Addams family? They're inherently counterculture by existing as a fun house reflection of nuclear family values. Pick you battles kids, cmon.
This is a brilliant way to frame many of the online misunderstandings surrounding class/wealth issues and social change, but mostly I'm just reblogging for the phrase "I'd sooner put Scrooge McDuck against the wall."
Now I’m having a flashback to Addams Family Hanna-Barbera cartoon in the 70s where at least half the episodes have the plot of them (mostly Morticia and Gomez) giving huge amounts of cash to innocents and villains alike all willy-nilly, while the villains still get their comeuppance.

I saw this on quora and thought it was cool and wanted to share it on here. Its a long read but crazy. Its from Erik Painter
They did try. And they did capture Navajo men. However, they were unsuccessful in using them to decipher the code. The reason was simple. The Navajo Code was a code that used Navajo. It was not spoken Navajo. To a Navajo speaker, who had not learned the code, a Navajo Code talker sending a message sounds like a string of unconnected Navajo words with no grammar. It was incomprehensible. So, when the Japanese captured a Navajo man named Joe Kieyoomia in the Philippines, he could not really help them even though they tortured him. It was nonsense to him.
The Navajo Code had to be learned and memorized. It was designed to transmit a word by word or letter by letter exact English message. They did not just chat in Navajo. That could have been understood by a Navajo speaker, but more importantly translation is never, ever exact. It would not transmit precise messages. There were about 400 words in the Code.
The first 31 Navajo Marines created the Code with the help of one non-Navajo speaker officer who knew cryptography. The first part of the Code was made to transmit English letters. For each English letter there were three (or sometimes just two) English words that started with that letter and then they were translated into Navajo words. In this way English words could be spelled out with a substitution code. The alternate words were randomly switched around. So, for English B there were the Navajo words for Badger, Bear and Barrel. In Navajo that is: nahashchʼidí, shash, and tóshjeeh. Or the letter A was Red Ant, Axe, or Apple. In Navajo that is: wóláchííʼ, tsénił , or bilasáana. The English letter D was: bįįh=deer, and łééchąąʼí =dog, and chʼįįdii= bad spiritual substance (devil).
For the letter substitution part of the Code the word “bad” could be spelled out a number of ways. To a regular Navajo speaker it would sound like: “Bear, Apple, Dog”. Or other times it could be “ Barrel, Red Ant, Bad Spirit (devil)”. Other times it could be “Badger, Axe, Deer”. As you can see, for just this short English word, “bad” there are many possibilities and to the combination of words used. To a Navajo speaker, all versions are nonsense. It gets worse for a Navajo speaker because normal Navajo conjugates in complex ways (ways an English or Japanese speaker would never dream of). These lists of words have no indicators of how they are connected. It is utterly non-grammatical.
Then to speed it up, and make it even harder to break, they substituted Navajo words for common military words that were often used in short military messages. None were just translations. A few you could figure out. For example, a Lieutenant was “one silver bar” in Navajo. A Major was “Gold Oak Leaf” n Navajo. Other things were less obvious like a Battleship was the word for Whale in Navajo. A Mine Sweeper was the Navajo word for Beaver.
A note here as it seems hard for some people to get this. Navajo is a modern and living language. There are, and were, perfectly useful Navajo words for submarines and battleships and tanks. They did not “make up words because they had no words for modern things”. This is an incorrect story that gets around in the media. There had been Navajo in the military before WWII. The Navajo language is different and perhaps more flexible than English. It is easy to generate new words. They borrow very few words and have words for any modern thing you can imagine. The words for telephone, or train, or nuclear power are all made from Navajo stem roots.
Because the Navajo Marines had memorized the Code there was no code book to capture. There was no machine to capture either. They could transmit it over open radio waves. They could decode it in a few minutes as opposed to the 30 minutes to two hours that other code systems at the time took. And, no Navajo speaker who had not learned the Code could make any sense out of it.
The Japanese had no published texts on Navajo. There was no internationally available description of the language. The Germans had not studied it at the time. The Japanese did suspect it was Navajo. Linguists thought it was in the Athabaskan language family. That would be pretty clear to a linguist. And Navajo had the biggest group of speakers of any Athabaskan language. That is why they tortured Joe Kieyoomia. But, he could not make sense of it. It was just a list of words with no grammar and no meaning.
For Japanese, even writing the language down from the radio broadcasts would be very hard. It has lots of sounds that are not in Japanese or in English. It is hard to tell where some words end or start because the glottal stop is a common consonant. Frequency analysis would have been hard because they did not use a single word for each letter. And some words stood for words instead of for a letter. The task of breaking it was very hard.
Here is an example of a coded message:
béésh łigai naaki joogii gini dibé tsénił áchį́į́h bee ąą ńdítį́hí joogi béésh łóó’ dóó łóóʼtsoh
When translated directly from Navajo into English it is:
“SILVER TWO BLUE JAY CHICKEN HAWK SHEEP AXE NOSE KEY BLUE JAY IRON FISH AND WHALE. “
You can see why a Navajo who did not know the Code would not be able to do much with that. The message above means: “CAPTAIN, THE DIVE BOMBER SANK THE SUBMARINE AND BATTLESHIP.”
“Two silver bars” =captain. Blue jay= the. Chicken hawk= dive bomber. Iron fish = sub. Whale= battleship. “Sheep, Axe Nose Key”=sank. The only normal use of a Navajo word is the word for “and” which is “dóó ”. For the same message the word “sank” would be spelled out another way on a different day. For example, it could be: “snake, apple, needle, kettle”.
Here, below on the video, is a verbal example of how the code sounded. The code sent below sounded to a Navajo speaker who did not know the Code like this: “sheep eyes nose deer destroy tea mouse turkey onion sick horse 362 bear”. To a trained Code Talker, he would write down: “Send demolition team to hill 362 B”. The Navajo Marine Coder Talker then would give it to someone to take the message to the proper person. It only takes a minute or so to code and decode.
I love what humans can do with language.
this is a poster i made for my call to action assignment in humanities! it's a bunch of basic and easy stretches for people who sit and work at a desk all day (me)
the idea is that you'd put the poster up above ur desk and do the stretches every 30 minutes or so,, the whole routine won't take more than about 6 minutes to complete and when done regularly it can prevent wrist, shoulder, neck and back pain! :)
all these stretches can be done while sitting (although i HIGHLY recommend you stand up and move around while taking a break from working)
