Need y’all to know that in the 1970’s a letter to the editor was published in Daily Telegraph where the author offhandedly used the phrase “Tolkien-like gloom” to describe an area with barren trees and JRRT himself wrote back an incensed rebuttal at the use of his name in a context that suggested anything negative about trees.

This is the best thing in the entire world. I love how much Tolkien loved trees and how fiercely he defended them. Here is a transcript:

Fantasy worlds always have large, beautiful moons, sometimes a few of them in pretty colours. We should have more fantasy worlds that have like 112 piece of crap tiny lumpy moons that are horrible and pointless.

There's some physicist from Idaho that did a series of what different locations on Earth would look like if Earth had Saturn's rings. Article was saying that depending on your latitude, the rings could appear as a straight line overhead, or a sort of rainbow arch higher up. Fun idea to toy with.

I'm currently trying to weave a basket out of the shredded pages of this book I gave up reading halfway through. It's usually my principle to always read the books I buy for arts and crafts purposes before I destroy them, but with this one I just gave up on.

The book was historical fiction, set in 1060s, and out of the two protagonists, one spends the first half of the book self-flagellating in guilt over raping a virgin. He does not rape virgins because he is A Good Christian. Other men's wives are fair game but raping a virgin is an atrocious sin because it ruins their market value. In an unrelated matter, soldiers under his command snicker at him behind his back for being such a soft lovestruck fool of a husband for not beating his beautiful wife for being useless. They know he doesn't beat her because she would stop being useless real fast if he did.

In this entire 500 page brick, the only character who isn't appalling or evil in any way is the other protagonist's former slave. They didn't free her out of kindness or anything, the local law in the city where they bought her just made keeping her as legal property bothersome and inconvenient. She doesn't continue to serve them out of any sense of loyalty, either, but simply because she has nowhere else to go and doesn't know what else she would do, as she has been a slave her entire adult life. She wasn't born into slavery, though. Her parents sold her into a brothel when she was a child, so that they could afford to buy her brother a horse.

I know a book doesn't need to have likeable characters to be worth reading, I rarely give up on a book halfway through, and out of principle never destroy a book I haven't read, but in the end I decided to make an exception on this one.
