look a lot of people are saying you should sleep on stuff and come back to it and 9/10 thats great advice but sometimes it truly is a turd and you did put a lot of effort into Polishing that Turd bc the undersketch was actually weaksauce but you couldnt see that while you were straight up applying chrome to that turd but then you peel off the chrome and youre like look maybe the chrome was the turd and you try to apply a simpler more straightforward approach to let the looseness and energy of the original shine and you discover the original drawing and construction and composition is actually the root cause. the rot started from the moment the pencil touched paper. and thats okay

Most people don’t understand how easy and common it is to develop psychotic symptoms or that everyone literally everyone has the capacity to experience psychosis

In fact if you’ve ever been sleep deprived including being able to sleep in shorter bursts but unable to get several REM cycles or you use substances to cause sedation rather than sleep you’ve likely experienced mild hallucinations already

They’re called disturbances. The things like thinking you heard someone call your name, feeling crawling sensation on your skin briefly, seeing things move in your peripheral but nothings there when you look.

This is (one of the reasons) why I really hate the “I’m [anxious/ADHD/depressed/etc.] not crazy!” The divide you draw between yourself and people with psychosis and psychotic symptoms only serves to harm. Not only those you alienate but also yourself. Because you have no guarantee that you will not join us one day.

We are all several nights of poor or no sleep and several bad things away from psychosis. It serves no one to be ignorant of it.

i know a bunch of people who've had brief psychotic breaks for one reason or another, and ... yeah. it's actually just really useful to be sort of familiar with the thing and have some thoughts about how it works and how to survive if you're the one driving.

Thinking about junk heirlooms.

I don't mean family heirlooms that feel like junk but that you can't get rid of because they're important. I mean the opposite -- things of no importance that were passed down through generations incidentally.

My grandmother owned a dish towel with a distinct checkerboard pattern. It wasn't important to her, just one of many dish towels. When she died my parents kept some of her stuff because of sentimental value, but some just because it was perfectly fine stuff they could use, and they ended up with it.

Years later I was moving to another state and my parents asked if I needed any old towels since they were getting new ones. I got a box of rags, which included my grandmother's dish towel (which had been downgraded to 'rag' by then, tbh it was in that category even when my grandmother owned it.) I literally have a rag that's been passed down through multiple generations.

It's not sentimental or anything, I still use it as a rag, but sometimes I look at it and picture it on the handle of my grandmother's oven door and feel shrimp emotions.

I hope anyone out there trying to recover from substance abuse knows they are worth it and you are loved. you deserve recovery. never feel as if you’re not worthy of it because you are. even if you relapse over and over again, it’s almost bound to happen. but please know you are worth recovery and I love you.

I've seen posts going around claiming that petting animals is basically tricking them into thinking they're being groomed, and it's bugging me because, like, there's no trickery afoot. Petting and scritching are grooming activities. They help to dislodge loose fur and foreign objects and more evenly distribute protective oils, among other things. Primates are social groomers, and the human impulse to scritch is the legacy of our primate ancestors. We see an animal we like, even a dangerous one, and the monkey brain says "groom that thing".
