“Get movin’,” Cooper ordered, yanking on the lasso as though Danny were an unruly dog. The young man yelped and began trudging faster towards the cave. “How come I’m in front?” the redhead questioned. “I don't even got no gun,” he complained.
“Oh, son, ain't you ever heard of a decoy?” The Ghoul replied. Behind him Lucy wearily watched him. He knew even without looking at her, that she likely watched him with terrified distrustful eyes.
They were back to square one.
Good, he mentally declared, hoping to convince himself that this was what he wanted.
“What the fuck’s a ‘decoy’?” Danny replied, shaking his head despite the ghoul’s question being rhetorical.
“Well, hunters used to put out these little bitty wooden figures, usually some type of waterfowl, you know, like a duck or a shorebird,” the ghoul explained, his words drawn out and his accent exaggerated.
Danny looked confused but the ghoul pressed on. “And all the other little bitty birds wouldn't know the difference between their friends and the little imposter. Then the hunters could get nice and close—”
“But they're never gonna think that I’m on my own! I'm all tied up! They’ll just shoot me!” Danny protested, stopping and turning.
Cooper’s easy smile turned sharp and vicious. Before either Danny or Lucy noticed his gun was once again trained on the Fiend.
“Like I said, Danny-boy, this ain't exactly a request. Guess you’re just gonna have to hope you can sell it,” the ghoul advised, the curve of his mouth lifted in a crooked grin.
