You love me, don't you?
richard gadd on jamie bell via bbc
Richard only felt big when petite Jamie is around
this is literally peak romance. to me.
I want Naill to be disgusting annoying perverted violent jealous despicable in despair lying worst of the worst at the bottom of the bottom rotten like a wound or roadkill want him to find men that remind him of Ruben and let them have their way with him only to think aftermath that Ruben would be better, he would smell better, move better, kiss better, apply both pressure and pain better. Give me longing give me stalking give me pining. Give me Niall who at the beginning will be like well, it's not stalking, cause it was easy to find information about Ruben (it was not, many steps had to be taken, he is just obsessive psycho), only to forget about his conscience later, and fully stalking Ruben like he is a little hound dog. Want him to be obsessive and possessive and delusional, thinking what ruben is doing right now, thinking what would he do in this or that situation, real and not situations, need Niall to replay and replay their shared memories and stares need him to see Ruben both in wet dreams and nightmares, yay. #myevilshow
the setting of half man is under discussed imo. im no expert in glasgow gothic but the show's scottish identity strikes me as important. glaswegians are some of the most ridiculed people in the english speaking world and particularly in the 80s/90s it was infamous for it's high rates in poverty and violence. that there's a prestige show airing on the bbc, showing the community in earnest, (that isn't a sitcom or a police procedural) is pretty notable by itself. coming from a similar background, i know that there are certain types of normalized crime that celebrate machismo, and so a lot of ruben's expression is informed and encouraged by the culture around him. as is niall's, it's really compelling to me that niall can't seem to conceptualise a life where he is openly gay and scottish, that his freedom hinges on emigration. and yes a big part of him wanting to move to oxford is to move away from his immediate circle of perception, but like i don't think it's a coincidence that the only openly gay man as of episode 3 is a brown immigrant. the gentrification involved in a shift from glasgow to oxford is a pretty sensitive area, that you can't have a scottish success story without settling down in england first. gay iconography, at least in early 90s britain, being associated with this kind of posh lifestyle that doesn't coincide with those in the estates, excludes glaswegians from a relatable queer identity. his ma's gay and his girlfriend's woke so there is literal proof under his roof that this is a life that's possible, but that the jury would like a thug more than a fag is a reflection of how homosexuality is viewed as an outsiders sport. i expect that when we see niall and ruben in contemporary scotland, there will be a reflection of how that mentality has drastically changed over the years and how queerness is recognisable across classes and counties. i don't know if this is something they'll ever tie together/make explicit in the text. but it's there. to me.
i just know the first time niall and ruben kiss, niall will make the most pathetic whimpers any near 40 year old man has ever made in their life and ruben will sound like he’s eating niall’s face.

The worst (best) part? Niall marrying Alby is the biggest declaration of devotion and penance he could have made to Ruben.
If Niall had betrayed Ruben like that, and then moved on as if it had never happened, that would have been the bigger betrayal. "I could only hurt you as much as I hurt you if it was for the sake of 'the most important person in my life'". Quote unquote. Niall has to convince himself Alby is that person, has to, or else he betrayed Ruben for nothing. The only way for Niall to show his love to Ruben while they're separated all these years is to devote himself completely to the cause he deemed worthier than Ruben's life.
kind of insanely hot that richard gadd wrote a story about a little doe-eyed guy being held in a literal and figurative chokehold by a bigger more masculine man who calls him "bambi" and jamie bell was like this is awesome i want to be bambi but i want you to be my ruben and because of this richard gadd transformed his whole body. to embody ruben. so that hed look as big as possible, and jamie would look as little as possible next to him, and their characters would be as physically different as possible... just an undeniably sexy thing to have happened no matter how you spin it
the inherent infantilization of niall walking on ruben's feet like a child, the visual of his little sneakers on ruben's boots while ruben conjures vague images of the unspoken horrors his own father is implied to have committed upon him... richard gadd is not merely a "freak" for creating half man hes making art about something he genuinely cares about hes drawing from his own heart hes trying to tell you something are you listening
why is watching an episode of half man like running a fucking marathon. im 20 mins in and im fucking exhausted. there is this perpetual anticipatory terror of Something (masculinity reasserting itself, shattering the peace created in its gaps and cracks) and that tension never lets up. its like a really well constructed horror film in that way.
#this whole thing is a horror show #watching actual horror is not this scary #toxic masculinity is such a good avenue for genuine horror cuz it is visceral #we live with it every day #so seeing it on screen and seeing the simmering tension is agony @imaginesapphics tags

Zuko had the sudden urge to bite down on her neck and shake her like a rabid pantherwolf. He settled for a threatening growl. It made her snicker.
We are here for the banter, the definitely not unintentional flirting, and their mysterious history together. Become a witness to Zuko's continuous torture in To Hesitate's second chapter: Say Enough (read here!).
for the record, if you ever take fans' art of a ship you don't like and compile it into a video to mock them at comiccon, but then 20 years later you make a movie where you make a joke about that ship because you know that's who kept your fandom relevant, i should be allowed to call you insecure
From the ATLA dvd commentary, “The Southern Raiders” episode, Book 3, episode 16.
Ew, angel on her shoulder I STG.
Like how backwards is it that the commentary on this episode (THE episode for Katara personal development, and the friendship between her and Zuko), that these guys make it about Aang?
They talk about Aang’s idealistic personal beliefs and how his preaching of them to her is paternal??? And no, he doesn’t tell her to do what she has to do, he makes an assumption of what she’s going to do and tells her what she should do. He doesn’t hear her out and totally ignores Katara’s need for closure. He gives her no credit to make her own decisions here.
That doesn’t mean that Aang’s words were wrong, and Zuko and Katara accepted that.
But it’s the way Aang put it on her that seems icky, like he didn’t trust her to make the right decision. And if she had killed Yon Rha (which I don’t think was ever on the table), Aang would never have forgiven her. Full stop.
This is another (obvious) reason why Zutara shippers cite the shit out of this episode. Zuko makes it clear that he will accept Katara regardless of her choice. He literallyy watched her bloodbend and never mentioned it again, and didn’t question her decision at the end. He was simply there for her. No platitudes, no lecture, no grandstanding or assumptions. He understood she needed to face the man that killed her mother and he trusted her to decide what to do from there.
At the end of the day, this commentary shows that Bryke and Ramanos also gave Katara no credit. They didn’t trust this character (that they spent the last 2.5 seasons building up), to make a good choice.
