         connor was sure he could bottle up his exhaustion and sell it as a product with the way it seemed currently to be running in concentrated amounts throughout his body. there really was no explanation for it; he’d been working as normal, felicity was fine, he couldn’t think of any reason why he might be expending more energy than usual. perhaps juggling two full-time careers - as a father, and as a scientist, in order of priority - had finally caught up with him.

        he had a think about it, and came to the conclusion that he hadn’t had a proper holiday in, oh, several years. that was rather sad. perhaps at the end of this year, he’d whisk felicity off to some nearby country. the spanish coast might be nice, or italy.

        as he deliberated holiday options, connor raised his styrofoam cup to his lips, blowing the steam away. his attention was suddenly captured by a tap-tap-tapping to his left, and he turned to see SKY behind a transparent wall. raising a hand in acknowledgement, connor made to enter the room, then stood by the desk at which she was sitting.

        ❛ you look about as tired as i feel, ❜ he said by way of greeting. ❛ i would have brought you a coffee, had i’d known you were here. ❜

She rolled her eyes slightly at the comment. “ First Ophelia now you. I’ll sleep later, but I have something more important.” 

Sky gave the other a smile as she tapped the chair beside her. “I only have so long before Dr. Smith figures out that I am in fact not ‘resting’. You’d think I was on my death bed.” She snorted at the idea, partly because even though moments before she was tired she was too excited to be now. 

“Remember the project I was working on. I got some headway which I think you might want to see. I obviously can’t publish it, but It’s going to be useful.” She looked over her shoulder slightly and seeing that no one was around turned her computer to him and put on her paper. 

“Also are you feeling any better?” She didn’t want to outright bring up the fact that he had acted strangely before, but also knew that she should probably talk about the other finding as well.

        The man nodded at Skylar’s first words. Not knowing what she was talking about left little room to improvise when it came to reaction, and not stepping overboard. “Can I have the copies?” Asked Spencer, hoping that if he could see it, he could at least know what this was about. “Or the originals, whatever works for you. I just want to look them over.” Spencer wished she could get out of the numbness the past few days had places her in, and get into the role better, but even with a DIFFERENT face she didn’t feel at peace. And she did think that not seeing herself in the mirror would help to somewhat forget or pretend nothing happened. 

        “I mean, I—” he seemed to stutter as Skylar rushed to close the door, stopped mid sentence feeling heart THUD against his chest. Spencer shook her head, forcing herself to refocus, despite the anxiety crawling under her skin. “A person in the police? Are you sure about that?”

          Despite the fact that the shifter did work for them, she didn’t trust them one bit. Outwardly, their intentions seemed to be the best, but really? Who knew. “Who?” Skylar couldn’t expect her not to ask now that she mentioned, brows furrowing as she made a step closer to the scientist. 

           With every word she spoke, Spencer’s wrinkles between her brows deepened and her skin became just a touch paler. She was only YET to see what was it that it shocked Skylar so much, and still, she already felt sickness within. “Show me,” demanded she, the character she had to play long forgotten, “And don’t tell anyone. We can’t risk getting dissected like frogs.”

“Copies - I,” Sky shook her head at the paranoia that went over her. “Of course. I’d rather give you a copy just, I have to block out the patient’s name and things. It’ll take a sec.” 

Sky shook her head slightly. “It’s not my place to play detective and - I know you aren’t going to like it but. There’s a woman I know, and she - well I trust her.” Sky played the pronoun game knowing that the other could easily find her and make her work worse. She didn’t really trust authority, but she knew that at least Spencer wouldn’t - well she wouldn’t give the information to someone that was doing whatever this was. 

“I’m not going to tell you her name, You can get her in trouble and I’m going to go later  - Connor” Sky looked at him for a moment not recognizing him for a moment. He was usually calmer then this, enthusiastic yes but not like this.  “Are you - what do you know?”

Sky still kept the originals in her hand and for a moment she pulled them closer to her before realizing that she was being paranoid. 

“I’m not about to tell the world about this until I know for sure, but if you know something I need to know you should tell me know. Because If - if someone’s doing this.” Her voice went off not knowing what she would do. After all the woman wasn’t strong and she certainly wasn’t charismatic enough to get people to listen to her.

Early Mourning || Sky & Joaquin

Without much more than a nod, Joaquin took to heart Sky’s (rather important) personal intuition, and ran home to procure some gardening supplies from his apartment’s basement. There wasn’t much of a selection due to the place’s small yard, but after a quick search in the dark, he was able to find a rotary tiller and an old styled rake, with hard metal prongs that looked more like meat hooks than the teeth of a comb. They weren’t supposed to be removed from the property, but seeing as nobody had used them in quite some time, he was sure they wouldn’t be missed for that night.

Though his phone battery was almost full, he didn’t want to chance being stuck without a backup light. He filled a small backpack with a heavy-duty lantern, some spare batteries, and a bottle of water just in case. When he met back up with Sky, he told her about his inventory and let her have first pick of the tools.

“If we run into any danger, I’ll do what I can, but you should have somethin’ for yourself if I go down.” Despite being on edge, he had to chuckle at the words coming out of his mouth. Had he really fled so far from his home just to live this kind of life? 

“I bet this isn’t what you had in mind for your Tuesday night, huh?”

Sky didn’t know what to grab which meant that she ended up with the rake she knowing damn well she wouldn’t be able to do anything with. She nodded to him and thanked him lowly for it, but knew she had taken the more useless tool. After all the woman had always had a twin that did the sort of fighting that might be asked of her now. 

Instead she packed most of her bag with different bandages and other things that would only be considered medicinal, but would probably make medical professionals shake there head. It was after all her mutation that made her able to pick up different medicinally powerful herbs and she hadn’t neglected it. She also packed a small light and water incase she found someone that needed it. 

“I think - if we find anyone I’ll be able to help them. I can’t use to much of - you know-” After all she had gone to the tents for him to know her mutation’s main power, “ Unless you want to drag me back.” 

For a moment Sky’s mouth turned up in a bit of a smile. After all she wasn’t used to being this serious for this long. 

“I have to admit this never crossed my mind.”

Sky sighed her typing getting worse and worse as she leaned her head further back on her chair. It wasn’t really an important email after all and she’d rather think about anything else. 

Her eyes glanced over to the glass that separated the reading room to the rest of the building behind her as she thought of anything else she could be doing. 

That’s when she saw Connor and seemingly forgetting the email she turned in her chair quickly and pushed off to tap on the glass, annoying she was sure the grumpy college professor. Waving him over she waited to see if he would actually indulge her.

      —ϟ Ophelia admired Sky for her perseverance during the awful situation that had been the bombings. Any other person, er mutant, would have crippled under the pressure and the stress, but she had not. 

      —ϟ ❝ But that doesn’t mean you SHOULDN’T take care of yourself, on the contrary, you should be focused on resting and getting healed. It probably took a lot from you. ❞ They replied with a concerned furrow in between their brows as they nibbled lightly on their bottom lip. 

      —ϟ Already noticing how stubbornly sensible the doctor was, Ophelia gave in slightly with a small warm smile thrown her way. ❝ Whatever you say, doc. ❞ The biochemist refocused their attention back to the papers at the table, hair that was not tied with a ribbon falling helplessly in front of their face. ❝ I think I can finally be absolutely sure of the source, like a hundred percent sure. ❞ They added referring to their power. ❝ You ready for this? Okay, ENERGY. ❞

Skylar waved her hand vaguely at the idea. “I heal all the time.” She couldn’t help but smile a little on the joke. 

“Hey now, that was sass.” Sky said chuckling a little and sipping some more on the coffee in front of her. Sky listened for a moment at their idea and thinking it through for a moment she nodded slightly. 

“So the - ability to produce energy and use it or use it from the surroundings?”

             Spencer in general has been always prone to getting her posterior into trouble, bu THIS? Something about this made the situation extra stressful, and she could feel her muscles spasm as she stared back at Skylar. “You probably need your vitamin D, to get you a little bit, uh—” NO. “I mean, the sun—you know what I mean?” She probably didn’t. The shifter could feel her stomach twist and let out a couple of noises she didn’t sign up for. Could she push all of this weird behavior on food poisoning? Maybe. She’d at least try to.

            “YES, the l a b results,” repeated she, giving a slow nod. It was probably not the best thing to steal something that belonged to the original Connor, but she was far too curious and far too deep in to reveal herself now. Even if it meant that’s how her identity could have been eventually caught. She took the papers and handed them to Skylar, turning on her heel to get to one of the counters, metallic and shiny—the man could see his own reflection there, and Spencer was for once glad it wasn’t HER OWN. In his skin, she felt weirdly comfortable, a face of another being working as a shield for her, protecting from whatever dangers her mind imagined there to be. But mostly? From herself, and her inability to deal with death and loss like a normal person. A couple of seconds went by and Spencer managed to pull herself together more, interest in the cause triumphing over anxiety. “What did you find?” 

               She walked around another table, stopping to examine this and that; none of these things were ALIEN to her. Her father, while he was still alive, made a room in their home for a lab, and Spencer soon followed his path. “I’ve been meaning to ask,” she spoke, turning to Sky with gaze more serious, hands shoved into his pockets enough so his upper back would appear softly bent, the posture just a little tense, “Have you figured out anything at all about the people who..came back?”

            “I- am going to just ignore that.” Sky said simply looking at the other with her eyebrow up before breaking out into a laugh. “ Yeah yeah after you go outside. You look like a ghost.” 

She looked up from the papers she had thoughtfully scattered across her desk for a moment trying to find his lab results. It wasn’t that she was a messy person, it was more that she was a chaotic one. Why have everything neat on her desk when she could have them where they were supposed to be.

Probably another reason the doctors hated her. 

“Just give me a second.” She put her thumb to her lip looking for a moment before plucking a few papers from a few different piles. 

“I found out you were right basically, it’s a solid thesis and you shouldn’t have a problem going to the board.” She looked up for a moment to meet him being a bit more serious then she thought he would be. 

Her eyebrow went up slightly more surprised by the question. “I didn’t think you wanted to discuss it here. I -” She looked at the door and went to shut it. Locking them in the room but more importantly stopping the sound from getting out. 

“I’m actually - well I know a person in the police I think that can help when I figure it out. Something strange is happening and I don’t know if it’s illegal but it sure as hell feels that way. I don’t know why anyone would want this.  But someone I helped a few days ago. It’s something I can’t understand, but I’ve known them for a long time and they were - more than changed mentally. I had them on file before, and their reading is so weird. Maybe you can make sense of it because it is baffling.” 

“It’s just, I know mutations can change over time but this is weird. If I wasn’t stuck here I would have already gone to someone - but I don’t know who to tell who won’t just make me disappear.” Sky shifted slightly in her feet, after all she trusted the man, and a few others but she couldn’t help but be on edge. This wasn’t something she was particarly good at.

In an effort to shield his wandering gaze from the stage lights, Joaquin’s eyelids snapped themselves shut. For a moment, he wasn’t sure if he was really a part of the crowd, or suffering quietly in a dream fueled by the horrors of recent events. Had it been the latter, the young man would have awoken safely in his bed after the count of three, and the opening of his eyes. Too bad for him– it wasn’t the case.

As they split up into groups, the only thing on Jo’s mind was how fortunate he was to have been spared. Some of the ones who’d been kidnapped were people he was around almost daily, and if they were so easily accessible for abduction, he was only flying free on the wings of chance. He looked anxiously at his phone to be sure there was reliable battery life, and turned to Sky.

“You don’t think we’re gonna need any weaponry, do you? I mean… we have no idea what the fuck is out there.”

Sky was - shaken. How could she not be when she saw that people were disappearing, going some place where she wasn’t sure they were okay. What frightened her more is she had always been on the island, but she hadn’t ever noticed the pattern. 

She didn’t like splitting up, and for the most part only did so because she was to nervous to say no. Still when she saw others she cared about leave she couldn’t help but want to pull them to her to make sure they would be okay.

Still out of everyone she knew that she would probably work the best with Jo. After all he had a pretty cool head from what she knew and if she found any of the others she would almost immediately try to heal them. 

He eyes went to him when he talked and she nodded. “I - one time I thought I heard someone screaming not to far from where were going. Spencer - well she pulled me away because - I don’t think it was human. If that’s right, we’d probably should.” 

Her voice was low like she wasn’t quite sure what she was saying wasn’t a fairy tale and she had put it out of her head as madness. 

“I don’t have anything though. I’m not much of a fighter.” To put it lightly the good doctor wasn’t even sure she could hurt someone else if she wanted too, but she didn’t want Jo to leave her behind or worse think that it was too dangerous. 

“But we should head  over before it gets to late. I’ll pack some stuff up incase we find anyone.”

           After the latest events, it was only a matter of time as of when Spencer would come back to dig deeper than before. She could get her hands on the files in the sheriff’s station, thus they weren’t the priority and something told her that it was not where she needed her eyes to be. No, the truth was supposed to be in labs similar as of ones the others had been released a while ago—and with her insatiable curiosity and determination, no surprise she soon was sneaking around buildings she shouldn’t have been let get close to in the first place. 

             FIRST THING’S FIRST, however, was a face change. Even though Skylar could have been considered a friend of sorts, and a mutant too, it wasn’t exactly HER that Spencer was hiding from. There were plenty others who could have not liked someone like her browsing their drawers, and would have hidden anything that her gaze wasn’t supposed to find. 

             The problem with Spencer was that she had little to no patience and it meant that her preparation was weak. She knew who she was going to pick, her eyes had fallen onto the man a while ago, and for a good reason. One, she needed anyone to get the blame off of her, and two, blending in worked even better. Spencer made sure Skylar wouldn’t be in the lab at the time of her arrival, slipping into it undetected—and if anyone even were to see her, it was NOT like she wore her own skin. A small smile crept up her lips with that thought. 

            At first it was all good and all well, eyes going through files as she browsed them quickly. It was when she find something actually INTERESTING and pressed to print that it appeared she had made a mistake. The door knob was pressed and with a crack it opened, Spencer’s (well, not really hers) body froze and she turned to see the “intruder”. Relief filled her heart with the familiar face, and she breathed out. Act cool. ACT COOL. “Skylar,” spoke up she, with a grin spreading in seconds, “Hey BUDDY, how are your erythrocytes doing? Lookin’ a little pale.” JESUS FUCK. Was it enough of a nerd talk for her to appear n o r m a l? Probably not, but she wasn’t against blaming drugs for it if asked, “What’s up?” 

Skylar had been doing rounds, something she loathed but as the hospital had been packed that even the ‘reclusive Dr Reed’  was supposed to be on call. It was bullshit as the other doctors sneered at her for being incompetent behind her back, but if she was fair the nurses were at least decent. 

She didn’t expect anyone in the lab seeing as she rarely had an assistant that wasn’t a friend come in and the doctors rarely came down here to busy with their ‘work’. They normally just put their work in the computers upstairs and it connected down here. 

So when Connor was in the room her eyebrow went up, especially when he was - nervous looking for him. It wasn’t un-heard of him stopping by, but Connor would probably get in trouble if another doctor had seen him. She instead leaned on the door for a moment. 

“Buddy?” Her eyebrow went up and she gave a slight laugh. “They’re fine as far as I know and it’s because I’ve been in the lab for the last ten years.” 

Her head tilted slightly. “Relax the doctors are all doing rounds I just came back because they finally dismissed me, what did you need?” Then it dawned on her what it could be “ Wait - shit. I was supposed to give you the lab results, I swear I was going to give them to you when I came around. I just also forgot about that. Give me a second. Also hand me that stack over there so if anyone comes in I can tell them I’m finally doing my paperwork.  ”

      —ϟ As Skylar demanded for them to repeat the question, Ophelia’s eyebrows furrowed at the middle in concern. The doctor looked worn out and exhausted, but while they had living ENERGY in them that more or less made them unsusceptible to fatigue, she did not. ❝ Have you taken a rest? A PROPER rest, not one of those thirty minute naps you seem to believe you can survive on. ❞ Out came the wittiness only reserved for those close to her.

She couldn’t help the roll of the eyes as the other talked about her naps. “Yes I have. After - It took me a week to recover and this is the result. But I think we can agree that the emergency warranted this.” 

Still to say that Sky was coping with the bombings wasn’t necessarily true. After all the only thing she was actually frightened of was death, and to see people hurt and her to be helpless to do anything. She could bring people from the break of death, but she couldn’t bring back the dead. 

“Besides sleep is boring and I’m way more interesting awake. It’s a stupid side affect and I’m not giving into it anymore.” There was a hint of a smile on her face, but only if you were quick enough to catch it.

“I was asking you if there’s a thing like Frontline for people. I’m really not trying to get fleas in my ears this summer, Doc. It’s gonna be bad for ticks, too.”

Wynona’s eyebrows creased as she examined the carry-on bags under Sky’s eyes, and immediately felt like she should be administering care instead. 

“Do you need to lay down? You look like you have Lyme disease.”

“I, No there’s no such thing as frontline, but if you want I can work on something for you. There might be a repellent from the mainland but I’ll have to call. If you want something more natural I can do that too. ” With her mind focused she started to loose some of the sleepy nature for a moment and sipped at the coffee, hoping that the caffeine would do something. 

Sky shook her head slightly trying to pull herself up. “ Don’t think I could get that one. It’s a side affect, but if I keep sleeping then where is the fun of life right?” She gave her a small smile. 

“Don’t worry I don’t do anything dangerous sleepy. I’m fine.”

       Quinn was never one to keep her nose where it belonged … or whatever the saying was about minding her own business. It had to be difficult for someone who literally overheard every conversation ever. So, when she walked into the café and particularly noticed the woman slumped over, she decided after a beat to skip the line for now and slowly approach the table.

       “Oh, I was just asking if you were alright,” Quinn repeated, unsure if she had even said anything at first. She never knew these days. Gesturing at the coffee with the hands that had previously been fidgeting with each other, “Is it hot enough? I could buy you a new cup of coffee, or get it heated up for you.”

“Huh? Oh I guess I do look - weird.” She had paused not wanting to freak the other out, after all Sky looked more like she was half dead and she wasn’t quite sure if the girl was a mutant to explain. Sky gave the girl a smile to show her that she was fine and shook her head. “I was just dozing off, don’t worry a thing. Thank you for worrying.”

Dr. Reed looked half dead as she leaned on her hand trying to keep awake. Even the scent  of the warm coffee did little to keep her eyes from drooping. After the horrors that had happened, Sky had spent a good week mostly unconscious.

Still she seemed to still be tired.
