“I- am going to just ignore that.” Sky said simply looking at the other with her eyebrow up before breaking out into a laugh. “ Yeah yeah after you go outside. You look like a ghost.”
She looked up from the papers she had thoughtfully scattered across her desk for a moment trying to find his lab results. It wasn’t that she was a messy person, it was more that she was a chaotic one. Why have everything neat on her desk when she could have them where they were supposed to be.
Probably another reason the doctors hated her.
“Just give me a second.” She put her thumb to her lip looking for a moment before plucking a few papers from a few different piles.
“I found out you were right basically, it’s a solid thesis and you shouldn’t have a problem going to the board.” She looked up for a moment to meet him being a bit more serious then she thought he would be.
Her eyebrow went up slightly more surprised by the question. “I didn’t think you wanted to discuss it here. I -” She looked at the door and went to shut it. Locking them in the room but more importantly stopping the sound from getting out.
“I’m actually - well I know a person in the police I think that can help when I figure it out. Something strange is happening and I don’t know if it’s illegal but it sure as hell feels that way. I don’t know why anyone would want this. But someone I helped a few days ago. It’s something I can’t understand, but I’ve known them for a long time and they were - more than changed mentally. I had them on file before, and their reading is so weird. Maybe you can make sense of it because it is baffling.”
“It’s just, I know mutations can change over time but this is weird. If I wasn’t stuck here I would have already gone to someone - but I don’t know who to tell who won’t just make me disappear.” Sky shifted slightly in her feet, after all she trusted the man, and a few others but she couldn’t help but be on edge. This wasn’t something she was particarly good at.
The man nodded at Skylar’s first words. Not knowing what she was talking about left little room to improvise when it came to reaction, and not stepping overboard. “Can I have the copies?” Asked Spencer, hoping that if he could see it, he could at least know what this was about. “Or the originals, whatever works for you. I just want to look them over.” Spencer wished she could get out of the numbness the past few days had places her in, and get into the role better, but even with a DIFFERENT face she didn’t feel at peace. And she did think that not seeing herself in the mirror would help to somewhat forget or pretend nothing happened.
“I mean, I—” he seemed to stutter as Skylar rushed to close the door, stopped mid sentence feeling heart THUD against his chest. Spencer shook her head, forcing herself to refocus, despite the anxiety crawling under her skin. “A person in the police? Are you sure about that?”
Despite the fact that the shifter did work for them, she didn’t trust them one bit. Outwardly, their intentions seemed to be the best, but really? Who knew. “Who?” Skylar couldn’t expect her not to ask now that she mentioned, brows furrowing as she made a step closer to the scientist.
With every word she spoke, Spencer’s wrinkles between her brows deepened and her skin became just a touch paler. She was only YET to see what was it that it shocked Skylar so much, and still, she already felt sickness within. “Show me,” demanded she, the character she had to play long forgotten, “And don’t tell anyone. We can’t risk getting dissected like frogs.”

spencer & juniper; event 03.
°✧ — @thecopycvt !
°✧ — Juniper awoke to the taste of iron in her mouth, a sharp throb in her side, & her left arm feeling like dead weight. Slowly, her eyes opened, blurry & out of focus until she blinked away the crust in the corners of her eyes. She looked to her left, panic beginning to rise in her throat when she realized her hands were CHAINED & her left was connected to someone she didn’t know. Frantically, she tried to remember what had happened leading up to this, & images of herself tending to the town square garden at dusk flashed briefly in her mind. She had been cultivating to a section of moonflowers, hoping to see them bloom in the late evening before she had to go, & then her mind drew a blank right after. Between then & now, Juniper didn’t remember a damn thing.
She remembered the day the explosions had gone off, though, the day when those who went missing reappeared alive, & those who weren’t so lucky were found DEAD. A sob threatened to pour out of her mouth & the corners of her eyes stung.
The woman at her side was still unconscious on the tiled floor, a heap of limp limbs & dark hair. Urgently, ignoring the pulsing pain in her ribs, Juniper crawled over towards her, gently taking her shoulder in her hands & shaking it.
❝ H—Hey, hey, p l e a s e wake up, ❞ she whispered in a panic, ❝ C’mon, we, we, we have to get out of here I don’t — ❞
The last feeling she could remember was suffocation. Red gas filling the area around her (where there others?), its taste she could still hold on her tongue. Spencer’s head pulsed, pain coming in regular waves. She could have slept and slept and slept, fatigue rejecting the push to get out of her muscles and bones. A gentle shake and a voice, begging her to come back to the surface of consciousness. It was hard, but she would. A silent promise that she would.
Heavy eyelids trembling before lifting and showing her awake, Spencer frowned with the sudden LIGHT blasting to her eyes. What the bloody fuck was this? It took a moment of heavy breathing for her to realize that she was but a p r i s o n e r in this place, her heart beginning to protest such fate almost immediately. “What?” And her own voice stopped her from saying anything else. Spencer looked down at her hands, FEMININE looking hands, and sh froze. The last time she saw her reflection, it was still Connor’s face, and for a single second a thought of someone wanting to kidnap the scientist instead of HER crossed her mind, but then she saw the others.
“What the fuck,” she whispered under her breath, dry mouth and dry lips. In her state, she could have easily fallen back asleep at any given moment, but the fingers on her shoulder, and the girl next to her, and the HORROR of the complete situation finally hitting her, Spencer jerked fully awake. “SHIT,” she hissed, brown hues widening, “Shit, shit, shit!” She tugged on the chains, but it was fruitless. Fear filling her veins she knew she had to act fast—no matter what this was, every instinct screamed for freedom. Looking at the lock she suddenly gasped, looking at the girl, “My pin! There should be a bobby pin under my ponytail," said she, turning her back to Juniper, “Can you get it?”

She wasn’t exactly sure what was wrong with the kid, or why he was acting like a complete weirdo (and psycho too; weircho? Psydo?), and Spencer was just not having ANY of it. So when these words left his mouth she froze, her back tensing in seconds as she could feel plain annoyance turn into anger for a second there, face muscles twitch and freeze, pressure begin to build up under her forehead and the bridge of her nose. She was THIS close to hitting her head to a wall, although still trying to remain calm enough to speak. Or threaten.
“You call yourself DADDY again and I will tie you upside down to that fuckfart tree, rip your arms off and beat you UNCONSCIOUS with them. Like a piñata, only PG-thirteen.” She turned around to look at the actual crowd that was gathering at her cussing, rolled her eyes and moved back to lock her ebony hues on the man instead, her posture straight, and expression challenging. If he decided to actually pick up a fight with her, the shifter had no way of knowing which side would win—and he could surprise and overthrow her, but DAMN if she didn’t have a fuckton of fight left in her from the last couple of days, and with that thought she raised a brow at him. “So? What it’s gonna be?”

sky-reed:
Skylar had been doing rounds, something she loathed but as the hospital had been packed that even the ‘reclusive Dr Reed’ was supposed to be on call. It was bullshit as the other doctors sneered at her for being incompetent behind her back, but if she was fair the nurses were at least decent.
She didn’t expect anyone in the lab seeing as she rarely had an assistant that wasn’t a friend come in and the doctors rarely came down here to busy with their ‘work’. They normally just put their work in the computers upstairs and it connected down here.
So when Connor was in the room her eyebrow went up, especially when he was - nervous looking for him. It wasn’t un-heard of him stopping by, but Connor would probably get in trouble if another doctor had seen him. She instead leaned on the door for a moment.
“Buddy?” Her eyebrow went up and she gave a slight laugh. “They’re fine as far as I know and it’s because I’ve been in the lab for the last ten years.”
Her head tilted slightly. “Relax the doctors are all doing rounds I just came back because they finally dismissed me, what did you need?” Then it dawned on her what it could be “ Wait - shit. I was supposed to give you the lab results, I swear I was going to give them to you when I came around. I just also forgot about that. Give me a second. Also hand me that stack over there so if anyone comes in I can tell them I’m finally doing my paperwork. ”
Spencer in general has been always prone to getting her posterior into trouble, bu THIS? Something about this made the situation extra stressful, and she could feel her muscles spasm as she stared back at Skylar. “You probably need your vitamin D, to get you a little bit, uh—” NO. “I mean, the sun—you know what I mean?” She probably didn’t. The shifter could feel her stomach twist and let out a couple of noises she didn’t sign up for. Could she push all of this weird behavior on food poisoning? Maybe. She’d at least try to.
“YES, the l a b results,” repeated she, giving a slow nod. It was probably not the best thing to steal something that belonged to the original Connor, but she was far too curious and far too deep in to reveal herself now. Even if it meant that’s how her identity could have been eventually caught. She took the papers and handed them to Skylar, turning on her heel to get to one of the counters, metallic and shiny—the man could see his own reflection there, and Spencer was for once glad it wasn’t HER OWN. In his skin, she felt weirdly comfortable, a face of another being working as a shield for her, protecting from whatever dangers her mind imagined there to be. But mostly? From herself, and her inability to deal with death and loss like a normal person. A couple of seconds went by and Spencer managed to pull herself together more, interest in the cause triumphing over anxiety. “What did you find?”
She walked around another table, stopping to examine this and that; none of these things were ALIEN to her. Her father, while he was still alive, made a room in their home for a lab, and Spencer soon followed his path. “I’ve been meaning to ask,” she spoke, turning to Sky with gaze more serious, hands shoved into his pockets enough so his upper back would appear softly bent, the posture just a little tense, “Have you figured out anything at all about the people who..came back?”

After the latest events, it was only a matter of time as of when Spencer would come back to dig deeper than before. She could get her hands on the files in the sheriff’s station, thus they weren’t the priority and something told her that it was not where she needed her eyes to be. No, the truth was supposed to be in labs similar as of ones the others had been released a while ago—and with her insatiable curiosity and determination, no surprise she soon was sneaking around buildings she shouldn’t have been let get close to in the first place.
FIRST THING’S FIRST, however, was a face change. Even though Skylar could have been considered a friend of sorts, and a mutant too, it wasn’t exactly HER that Spencer was hiding from. There were plenty others who could have not liked someone like her browsing their drawers, and would have hidden anything that her gaze wasn’t supposed to find.
The problem with Spencer was that she had little to no patience and it meant that her preparation was weak. She knew who she was going to pick, her eyes had fallen onto the man a while ago, and for a good reason. One, she needed anyone to get the blame off of her, and two, blending in worked even better. Spencer made sure Skylar wouldn’t be in the lab at the time of her arrival, slipping into it undetected—and if anyone even were to see her, it was NOT like she wore her own skin. A small smile crept up her lips with that thought.
At first it was all good and all well, eyes going through files as she browsed them quickly. It was when she find something actually INTERESTING and pressed to print that it appeared she had made a mistake. The door knob was pressed and with a crack it opened, Spencer’s (well, not really hers) body froze and she turned to see the “intruder”. Relief filled her heart with the familiar face, and she breathed out. Act cool. ACT COOL. “Skylar,” spoke up she, with a grin spreading in seconds, “Hey BUDDY, how are your erythrocytes doing? Lookin’ a little pale.” JESUS FUCK. Was it enough of a nerd talk for her to appear n o r m a l? Probably not, but she wasn’t against blaming drugs for it if asked, “What’s up?”
rubyredsongbird:
“right, right. you’re absolutely right.” it hadn’t taken long at all for ruby to sober right up. the terrors that the darkness of night held were foreign to her until now. she could feel her hands shaking in anxiousness, a cool sweat along the back of her neck feeling that at any given second that could be it. as the moments ticked by, it seemed as if every so often a greater darkness passed by, though what it was, ruby was too afraid to look out and see.
“basement’s definitely a better idea —- i’m not so sure that floor’s gonna hold.” she added, her eyes flickering up towards the ceiling, now that her eyes had adjusted, which was, in certain spots, null. to say the building had seen better days would’ve been a DRASTIC understatement. “if we can find a way in …” at least looking for one would be a task, something to keep her mind from wandering to what was outside. pressing her foot down a little harder, without stomping for a hollow spot. “psssst!” she began with a snap. “i think there’s one over here.” pushing up the dusty rug aimlessly, sure enough there was a latch to pull open a door between the floorboards —- nothing but complete darkness waiting for them down below. “you sure about this ?? tell me you’re sure about this so that’ll make one of us.”
For a single second Spencer stopped. Stopped panicking, stopped moving and searching for the door for their escape and salvation, and turned to look at Ruby. The girl was still walking, searching, HOPING. The shifter, however, already KNEW what she had to do if push came to shove. The same thing she had done for Alex for years, an INSTINCT developed so well she didn’t need to actually make a decision. It wasn’t even up for debate—if everything fell through, she’d lock Ruby somewhere herself if she needed to, and take whatever came her way.
With Ruby calling her it finally snapped Spencer out of the self-destructive mode, and went to take a look at what could have been their only saving grace.
“No, but—” she raised her eyes at the redhead for a second, doubt in her words and features. She looked around, trying to determine whether it was safe or not for Spencer herself to jump in first—letting Ruby go when she saw nothing? Big mistake. If the Babadook persona didn’t get her, falling down the ladder would. She looked down again, eyes lighting up with shades of yellow and golden brown, the sight before her becoming much clearer. Without saying another word she made a quick way down the crumbling ladder, every step careful and almost calculated. “Okay,” she spoke up, “Besides rats it seems fine. I mean, I’d RATHER get chewed up by those suckers than..Whatever it is—just,” she held out a hand, should Ruby need some support, “Get down here, I got you.”

Her memory was a fading blur of what just had happened—how did they exactly end up in the Ringleader’s house, together, she wouldn’t have been able to explain in detail; but it was HER fault their presence became known, and it was HER fault Matthew was there in the first place—Spencer preferred to do the dirty work on her own, that way not dragging anyone else into any possible danger, and this was a lesson of why she should have kept her crime history the same. But now she already could hear the steps coming their way, slow and calculated, and she held her breath in, brown eyes locked on the door before jumping to the window, and to Matty himself. One of them could have been saved, if the other decided to stay. It took no time at all for her to make up her mind.
“LEAVE while you have the chance,” she hissed at him, hands pushing him away and towards the exit she knew he could make it if he tried. “I’ll keep him away, I’ll—” She stopped, vaguely gesturing for a second before pushing him one more time, teeth clenched together. Spencer knew it was too late for her to jump after his step when a low voice called out her name behind the STILL locked door, a sound of sharp nails scraping the surface of the oak. “Just GO, Matthew. ..Please."
Fingers desperately pushing him away she finally stepped towards the door, a single tiny step, knowing she’d have to meet her punishment. Spencer gave a single glance back before licking her lips and taking a deep breath, preparing for whatever was to come, and pulling herself together she spoke up, “I’m here.”

There was a moment of silence between them where her breathing thickened, became heavier, although there was no sign of PANIC or any feeling that would have made her think less clearly. “You can’t fix me,” spat she, then moving her gaze towards Nyxxie, “I am not some broken thing, no amount of super glue will change what happened, and sometimes I just—” Spencer pressed her lips together tightly and shook her head, refusing let out the final dose of venom leaking through her words. Although she knew they weren’t directed at Nyxxie—they were hers to swallow and die from—the shifter also knew that the girl could have taken it personally.
“It is what it is.”
A weak lift of her shoulders as she slowly got up from the ground. “I did some bad things, Nyx. Some things I can’t really come back from, and I need to be alone,” a careful, barely visible nod repeated a few times as she chewed on her bottom lip, making her final decision, “I need to be alone with what I’ve done.”
