rant about the new noah kahan album if anyone cares
about the new noah kahan album
at first I was like "this is much worse than stick season but it'll grow on me"
I saw this instagram reel description that kinda perfectly captured it
while stick season is about feeling the feelings (raw suffering in the moment), the great divide is about looking at that same thing from a more passive, disjointed, perspective
like there's this sense of yearning throughout the album, and the songs seem to all be pointing at something bigger but you can't quite grasp it
it's there and you want to understand it so much but it's just bigger than you and you can't
while stick season is all about grasping it and bluntly screaming it at the world, but being unable to resolve it even when it's all out there
whereas the great divide is about looking at the same thing but it's muffled, and nonsensical because it's muffled and disjointed (like nostalgia, or past events that you'll never quite be able to understand fully)
they're two different ways of looking at the same uncategorical grief: 1. bluntly and trying to feel everything fully; being in the moment and being unable to understand as it's happening 2. disjointed and nostalgic; looking back and being unable to understand what's occured after the fact
thus, the songs from the great divide need time to stick with you, they pull on your subconscious until you can't escape the feelings they convey that cannot be described
while stick season is more palatable and easier to quickly relate to, both musically and lyrically
I love both dearly, and still would say I prefer stick season, but there's no question that the great divide will stay with me <3
