Stoner Life

What I love most about the stoner community on tumblr is that it’s so diverse and real. Kinky people smoke weed, gay men smoke weed, lesbians smoke weed, asexual people smoke weed, trans people smoke weed. I see carefree black girls and boys. People who love their bodies, people who are journeying to love their bodies. I see naked stoners and some stoners in the loveliest of sweaters. People who love huge rips and people who take tiny tokes, I just love seeing cannabis in so many different walks of life and how one plant can connect us all. This community broadened my knowledge on cannabis and it’s users so much.

So my therapist said something awhile back and it’s really stuck with me.

I was talking about the stupid things I had done in high school.  How the stories I wrote were stupid and how all I ever wanted to draw was anime shit (which was stupid) and how immature I could be, etc etc etc.

and she was like “Why are you so determined to beat up on Little Maggie?”

It took me off guard, I was like “what do you mean?”

“Why do you keep saying Little Maggie is stupid?  You say she was stupid and immature but wasn’t she just a teenager?  Do you not like who you were as a teenager?”

I shrugged and was like “I think teenage me was very creative and was probably just having fun and being a teenager…”

“So why beat up on her and call her stupid and embarrassing?”

“I dunno, because I guess now I’ve learned a lot.”

“But she was young.  She didn’t know.  I’m just telling you this because if you keep beating up on Little Maggie, you have to remember that she grows up to be you.  When you put bruises and scars on Little Maggie, you’re leaving all the healing for Big Maggie.  Your insecurity about who you were as a child is going to come through into your adulthood.  Be nice to Little Maggie.”

And I’d never really thought of that before?  It seems status quo to just… hate who you used to be for not knowing enough, but that’s totally illogical.  Of course a younger version of you doesn’t know what you know and can’t act with the wisdom that you act.

And even if Little Maggie was writing silly stories about her friends while ripping off anime and drawing her own “manga” and being immature and goofy, she was having fun, she was being creative, she was enjoying the things she liked and she wasn’t hurting anyone.

She’s part of my past and hating her is hating the foundation of who I eventually became.

I saw this news yesterday and realized I’d never actually visited the forum? so I did, and wanted to fucking die. these men are absolutely co-workers and bosses, men you’ve fucked, lawmakers, etc. and their feelings towards women and their ideas about gender and society inform the way they act towards all the women they encounter in their daily lives. I was so grossed out and freaked out by what I read on there, and the idea that of all the guys I’ve hooked up with, at least a couple probably thought of me the way men on there think of women.

I’ve talked about this before but cis women -  ask trans women sometime about their experiences when they were perceived as being male.  Ask us what men are like when they don’t think there are any woman around to hear them, because they are usually fucking awful and they don’t see woman as people but objects to covet and possess. The things I’ve heard men say about their wives and girlfriends are fucking disgusting, and about woman in general.  If a woman is present or would come into the room they immediately change their tune, and since they are raised in an environment where toxic masculinity is so pervasive they do it without even having to think about it.  They have been taught and conditioned by other men to be like that since childhood in a self perpetuating cycle of shit. All of this is no surprise to us at all because we’ve seen it first hand. Even the men who aren’t that terrible still tolerate it and wont call other men out when it’s happening because it would go against a sort of unspoken code which would make them look weak and ostracize them from the group they’re in. As a man you are expected to participate in misogyny.  It’s not just a few bad apples, it’s MOST MEN.  And they don’t even think they’re bad people for it cause it’s so normalized and ingrained in male culture. Fucking ask any trans woman who transitioned later then their teens and who spent time as an adult in the company of men while being perceived as one.  They’ll tell you how bad it really is.
