about to graduate with my big ol’ writing degree and i really need to share this hot take.

WARNING— OPINIONS 🔥

self-publishing work is not a remarkable feat.

i see so many authors all about the flex that they’ve written their own massive first draft and that they’re self-publishing and the best in the game because they self-publish. the whole flex of being published (traditionally) in the first place is that you’re writing has been “screened” to be good; there is a barrier to entry that is extremely hard to pass, and only the best of the best oftentimes can pass it. i will also acknowledge here that the industry is a sketchy place and certainly gets hairy with selecting genre works and over-selecting romance throwaways that sell, but i truly feel a part of the writing process to me is the grind of going trad. so, for me, self-publishing is really not that much of a flex, rather just signaling that you are cheating a rite of passage that most can only assume is due to lack of intentional process or skill.

and, not to bring up this point, but to so many self-published authors who are so anti-fandom and fan fiction… the call comes from inside the house. you working through amazon storefront and maybe getting a few cents every month in royalties only makes you pennies different than writers sharing their work on ao3. fan fiction is self-published, babe. you just claim to have original characters/world and call yourself superior.

writing is writing. be kind and supportive to writers in all stages, and even considering my own personal feelings regarding self-publishing, i am still generous towards those who deem self-publishing their ideal process. i am just tired of those pursing the process being so quick to put themselves on a pedestal. truly, the only difference between my 16 year old self writing fan fiction and me now with my first novel draft is money and time. all kinds of writing is productive writing. stop being weird. and, engage in your community. be open to learning from those who’ve gone trad, those who haven’t. of course, still celebrate your accomplishments, but belittling is a strange game and it is very lame to witness.

Summary:

The end is, unfortunately, never quite the end.

No matter how much a damaged group of siblings try to divorce themselves from their past, something keeps drawing them back to the chase. The Elite Force’s Superhero Hunt is simply just an excuse to do so.

But, facing the past head-on cannot be fixed with bionics, and the Davenports are getting too old to keep letting this pain fester and drive them even further apart.

Safe to say Oliver, Kaz, and Skylar had no idea what they were getting into when teaming with this fragmented family line. But, they’re in too deep to turn around now. ──═━┈━═──
