A library? The rooms in this castle were seriously lame. Ayato couldn’t do anything except stare at the titles, sparing the books the fate of having the pages torn out of them or burned. “Watch this place become a repeat of the Library of Alexandria, flames everywhere, books burned down to nothing. How awesome” He was clearly talking to himself.

“Reckless destruction begets the destruction of yourself. Or did you not learn that in your stint as the killer?”

Gabby was like a ghost herself, the way she drifts into a room, seemingly without making a noise until she chose to speak.

“This is a place of knowledge. I think you should show it some more respect.”

Gabby didn’t particularly like Ayato. Not only had he accused her of murder in the last chapter, but he seemed to be fighting against her guidance. She had to pull him back.

Fortune’s Future | Post-Trial/ch 3 open

Was anything real anymore…? Two more people had died, but it felt like it just flew by for Gabby. She tried to investigate and before she knew it she was in the trial. Could she say anything? Should she say anything? These were her children, she was to guide them. But some of them seemed to resist being guided, while others would eventually have to learn to operate without her guidance.

So she allowed them to continue without her help. Let’s see if they have what it takes to persevere without her. Of course it seems that suspicions are turning on her. She would step in and turn things around if she had to. But her patience for these children, who seemed so intent on going against fortune’s path, was wearing thin.

In the end, the culprit was found at the end. That’s fine at least. Another one she could have saved if they had just listened to her.

And now she goes on, time to find something else to do. Maybe she can try against o reach out to one of the children? She’ll try and find someone in the courtyard…

Ecaterina was resting against her favorite tree in the courtyard, soaking up some rays while she could. She had transferred the ring to a necklace to keep it safe and always on her person. The least she could do was keep it safe to honor that promise.

She was playing with the ring between her pointer finger and thumb, rolling it against the material of the necklace as she sat, lost in thought. She had been the one hardest hit by this trial, despite being the primary mover of it. She had been given the best and most decisive evidence thanks to her eagle eyes, but she had been forced to use it to strike down a dear friend she would rather have not dismantled in that manner.

She saw Gabby walk into the courtyard nearby and dipped her head slightly under her hood, though the light glinted off the ring every time she played with it. Not that she didn’t want to talk of course, just that she wasn’t sure how the odd card reader would react to her.

Ah, Miss Scheinberg. There were worse people to talk to, Gabby supposed. Better her than a lost soul. Their last one on one conversation had gone alright at least, might as well follow up.

“I hope this morning finds you well,” She says as she approaches. “Ecaterina, I wanted to thank you. You defended me in the trial and helped the rest of the class see the error of their so-called logic. So thank you.”

She blinks slowly, thinking carefully of the words she chooses. 

“I know Kae was dear to you, and it was hard to carry on with the trial. But you did. That speaks volumes of your strength, I find it commendable.”

She fiddles with the hem of her shirt, avoiding looking at the other girl directly after this.

“An... An oracle never goes where she isn’t wanted. May I sit?”

Despite also having stood catatonic during most of the trial, Yuki was a little worried for Gabby. It was probably still a little early to go to bed, since it was still morning and all… So what else would she do but put together a nice snack?

It seemed a bit easier to evade Ecaterina today, so she was able to fill a tiny bento with little star-shaped onigiri. …Minigiri?

It would have been easier to hunt Gabby down if Yuki hadn’t tried searching the castle first, but eventually they crossed paths.

“Hi… Are you hungry at all…? It’s just a little bit, so…”

She offered Gabby the box.

Oh, Yuki. That’s a pleasant surprise as any. She was one of the good ones. Still willing to follow her guidance. Gabby was no medium, she could do nothing for the lost souls of the dead, but Yuki could still be guided.

“Thank you dear.” She takes the bento appreciatively. When had she last eaten? This might be a good thing to take. 

“I hope you’re doing alright child. I’m sure this game has taken a toll on you... Have you been taking care of yourself as much as the others?”

Ch 2 Body Reaction || Gabby

Gabby blinked as she stared at the body. She had come when the others called. Another body meant another trial, which meant another execution. Now more than ever, they would need her guidance.

But what good as it done them yet?

She bit her lip and tried to ignore that nagging voice in the back of her mind. Tortured spirits hellbent on bringing about their vengeance through the easy access of a paranormally sensitive mind. She wouldn’t give them the satisfaction of breaking her, not after over a decade and a half of fighting them. She had a more pressing battle to face anyway.

She approached the body and knelt down, examining it closely. She had a lot of work to do.

“…’Morning.” Came the quiet, husky reply. It seems his voice had returned to it’s normal scratchiness.

“No. Was looking for healthy foods. Don’t…want to bother Yuki too…much. Trying to remember. What’s healthy to eat…what I recognize. Food different…here. Don’t…eat…much.” He explained.

The god talk was practically expected at this point. So much curiosity. These characters were acting just as he’d thought.

“Just…a god. A. Don’t think too hard…about my other…creations. Or do. Can’t…directly make you do anything.” He sounded faintly resigned on that particular subtopic. “I am a god. Nothing…no, bad way to put it. I indirectly make everything exist…or occur. Both. I………just can’t control it. Subconscious. Does. It. For me.”

“Hmm, I see. I suppose even in this simulation, with the realism turned so far up, healthiness is very important. Well perhaps I can help you, if you don’t mind working in japanese.”

She reached for a box and began sorting through the contents. It seemed to be full of beans.

“For what it’s worth, the only god I believe in is Fate, and she favors me quite boldly, so I’m afraid you’ll need to do more if you want me to believe you. But a god walking amongst men isn’t the weirdest thing I have seen in my sight.”

She shakes her head and chuckles.

“So what do you make of this game? Do the stakes make it less... boring? I have to wonder if those of us who’ve died are in harms way, since this is just a game after all.”

Beautiful is Boring - Ch2 - Open

The thing with character development was that it took time…

And waiting is boring.

Folke’s resting again. His strength is slowly coming back, but he wants to get better than where he was now that he has time to spare. So he’s in the pantry, cataloging food in his sketchpad in English…or at least trying to. Fruits and vegetables are easy enough to name to himself, but these other things? Much harder.

List: Cabbage Onions Potatoes Berries (don’t recognize specifics) Bread Apples

The creak of the door gets ignored. People are always coming and going. It’s not like the person could hurt him, anyway.

Ah yes. The one who thinks himself a god. Gabby had been meaning to speak to him, and here he was to be stumbled upon. Seems fate is on her side on this day indeed.

“Good morning Folke. It’s good to see you out and about.”

She had let herself into the pantry, joining the glass artist.

“You’re sorting the food we have? Would you like some help? Perhaps I could help translate.”

She didn’t wait for an answer, sliding up next him, examining a basket of potatoes.

“I wanted to ask you more about the things you said during the trial. It interested me deeply. You say you’re a god? The god? Please, tell me more.”

Gabby walks in, her footsteps muffled by her shoeless socks. She smiles at Ecaterina, her eyes half lidded.

“I hear most things dear. That is my job as the Oracle. But without a blacksmith, this is no forge. It is just a dirty room. If you wish to find the loot you seek, you must either learn the tools of the trade, or make it worthwhile to the person who knows them.”

She glances up and slyly smiles again. She flicks her wrist and suddenly in her hand is a card. A magic trick? She turns the card over to show off the fanciful image of a man surrounded by three long staves.

“The three of wands, upright. This is an opportunity to expand your horizons.”

Another flick of her hands and the card disappears. It seems she’s a little more dexterous than she appears.

Ecaterina turned around to face the newcomer, and smirked at her. “It’s amazing how you’ve learned the art of making restating the obvious sound so mystical!” Ecaterina nodded to herself, and her smirk relaxed to a smile. 

“You have neat card tricks too. I saw you at the trial and you had a lot to say, but we haven’t met before. I’m Ecaterina Scheinberg, SHSL Spinner of threads! Heir to Arachne herself!” Ecaterina flourished with personality, cloak fluttering in the brief woosh she just made herself. Oh goodness, Ecaterina was back in the mood and back on her antics again.

“Who might you be? Though I guess you’re a Tarot card reader, nobody else I could imagine would have it so ready to present to a newly met person. Or maybe you’re SHSL Oracle, but you’re not exactly what I expected you to look like if so! I look far more mystical than you!”

Gabby’s smile doesn’t falter despite Ecaterina’s jab.

“You shower me with praise, but I assure you it is my pleasure to guide us through these hard times. Such is my role.”

She does a fancy curtsy. “It is lovely to meet you, Ecaterina. A daughter of the gods is an honor to meet indeed. You are correct in your first guess, my name is Gabriella Vivencia, oracle of the fates and the SHSL Tarot Reader. Blessed with The Sight from a very young age, it is only natural I take on the role of seer. I’m not sure what you were expecting. Some false oracles attempt to look like they are magic to compensate for their lack of true sight. I don’t feel the need to look mystical, I simply am.“

She walks towards the forge, poking her head into the furnace. When she comes out, she has a little soot in her hair and on her cheek, but she’s holding a sparkling gold coin.

“Oh look! A small treasure! Truly fate is on my side this day.” Another flick of the wrist and the coin is gone.  “I’m curious, what do you do as a spinner of threads? Do you mean literally, as a seamstress, or a story teller? Either is rather interesting, I’d love to hear of your adventures.”

She moves on to overlooking some of the tools. “Perhaps I am being presumptuous, but I think we could make quite the dynamic duo, Miss Scheinberg.”

Ecaterina had her legs in a wide stance, hands on her hips, and was smiling down at the contents of one of the new rooms, the forge. She appeared to be plotting something, and was giggling to herself rather ominously.

“I could do oh so many amazing things with this equipment..if only I knew how to use ANY of it!” She was in high spirits at least. “I hope someone here knows how to, I wanna see this thing in motion. I wanna make cool swords and stuff! Maybe accessories? I’d kill for a tiara and some new earrings!” She abruptly jerked her head around as she heard the door to the room behind her creak open behind her and the sound of someone stepping in. “..didja hear any of that?”

Folke blinked behind his glasses. Then went about writing again, hiding the letters from her until he was done writing again. For reference, this is in English, not Danish or Japanese.

He shows the sketch pad again, a small frown on his face.

I wasn’t present for the announcement in the tower I believe you’re referencing. I could hear his voice faintly but ‘d already left. Couldn’t stay any longer. Wanted to though. But the 2nd is correct, that is what I meant.

Speaking to everyone though is not an avoidable problem. I meant this as my other problem: ‘we will find the blackened soul who did this’. That sentence is flawed.

He looks at her seriously through his wire frame glasses, face half-buried into his scarf. He hasn’t spoken a single word.

Nonverbal huh? Gabby knitted her brow as she read. Her English was a little rusty, so she wasn’t 100% sure about what she was reading, but she had the general idea, she thought.

“I’m.. sorry Folke, but I don’t see the error I made there. Is it the certainty? That I said we will when I should have said we want to, or something similar? I am confident that with proper guidance we can find the truth, even if it will be difficult.”

She hummed, putting a finger to her chin and looking to the side.

“Fortune does favor the prepared though, which is why this investigation is so crucial. Have you found anything of note?”

It had been a rather calm day for Gabriela. Following her victory in the hunting challenge, she ended up abstaining from the prize, since there were more teammates than prizes, she was happy to go without for her team. She sat in the grass, enjoying the air. Next to her she had her bottle of green soda she really didn’t like the look of, as well as her freshest monocoin. She was reading the cards to see what the future held, but she didn’t like what she saw.

The Tower (XVI) The future contains disaster and upheaval.

And just then, she smelled the smoke, heard the people running, and followed the crowd.

She didn’t think no one would stoop to murder. She didn’t think that everyone would survive this simulation. But she also didn’t think it would happen so soon. Gabby clutched the card close to her chest, how funny that it too depicted a burning tower, how very literal Fate, thanks for the message.

Gabby helped with the water, trying to maintain as much evidence as possible.. so much was already destroyed. And as she went outside to catch some air after the fact, she saw all the people crowded around Kiyoshi. Two people dead, two people she never got to meet. Two people she could have saved. If only she had better guided them…

“Everyone, we need to find who stuck these poor souls down. Just like those foxes, search in every nook in cranny if you have to, find as much evidence as you can. We will find the blackened soul who did this.”

Folke was with the group around Kiyoshi, seeming to gravitate more towards him. Something this girl had said was…well, most likely incorrect.

Folke reached into his cardigan pocket and pulled a sketchbook out, pen attached. He started to write something, walking closer to Gabby as he did, until he close enough to where she had her attention - but not too close for comfort. He held the sketchpad out low, expecting her to look at it.

“Hm?”

Gabby perked up out of thought as Folke approached her. She didn’t really expect people to walk up to her, just to do what she said. This wasn’t the time for idle chatter obviously, but still, clearly this boy needed her guidance, and she would happily oblige.

...Or not, scanning over the paper she saw that this wasn’t a request of guidance, it was a critique. Well that was a bit annoying, since there were dead bodies not 30 feet away, but sure, Gabby could entertain Folke while she thought about where to investigate next.

“Problems? Well, the most obvious one is that I’m speaking to everyone, telling them to investigate, when someone in this group is the killer, but I doubt the killer would listen if I said ‘Everyone but the killer, investigate’, so it’s easier to just say everyone, no? As as for the second... is it that I’m assuming that there’s only one killer? But it’s not like I’m assuming, it’s as the crowned one said...

Now don’t be mistaken! I didn’t do that! It was one of your fellow students!

The Moon (XVIII) - Animals Hunting Animals | Gabby | Ch 1 Event Reaction

Gabby listened intently as King Kuma spoke, and nodded along. Yes yes, this is what she had predicted. Challenges and trials to test them. As she held the musket in her hands, which was a touch too heavy to hold properly, she reflected on the task at hand. She would have more qualms about killing if it wasn’t virtual, but all the same it was a bit daunting. She decided to turn to her cards for advice.

Spreading the cards on a velvet mat, she created a complex diagram and asked many questions.

“Is this right?” “Should I lead my team to victory?” “Where will I find the fleet-footed marks?”

When she had the answers she needed, she stood up again, hoisting her gun.

“My team of dragons, with my guidance we are sure to emerge victorious in this competition...”

The game went without much incident. Everyone seemed to go their separate ways. Gabby wandered into an empty field and lifted up her gun. She closed her eyes and squeezed the trigger.

“Fortune guide me”

The shot rang out, recoil knocking Gabby back. She got up shakily and went after her musket ball. Lo and behold, she found it buried in the entrance to a fox den, with a dead fox right underneath.

“Aha! Thank you fortune for your guidance!”

Bringing the fox back to King Kuma and turning in her gun, Gabby waited for the results.

Team Dragon is the winner!

“Hurrah! I believed in us! With my guidance, our team will always win!”

She looked over the prize curiously, and turned to her teammates.

“There are 8 potions and 8 of us, who wants what type of potion?”

“If the bear guides us, one of us could end up being a killer?” That’s what Yakamochi got from what she said. He sighed quietly and when he noticed her gaze, looked away. 

“Tarot reader huh, that explains why ya have that card” He glanced at the blond man on the card, he looked happy, was that a good thing?

“I’m not really following ya, sorry. Tarot cards confuse the heck outta me, I’m interested in learning about them though, it’ll make a nice new act for my performances” It was his way of asking if she’ll teach him how to read cards. “I’m Yakamochi.” He frowned at the last thing she said.  “If ya say so..”

“That is one way of interpreting my advice. It’s up to you how you want to act on it though... And yes, I am a tarot reader. With the cards, I am able to gaze into that which is incomprehensible to a more feeble mind.”

Gabby seemed a bit taken aback when Yakamochi said he wanted to learn how to read cards.

“You.. you think you have The Sight as well? Well... I suppose, I could try and open your eyes to Fortune...”

She seems to be taking this very seriously.

“But if this goes wrong, your mind could be permanently altered. Are you sure you’re ready to take the burden of knowing Fate’s plans? it is not to be taken lightly, or to be used for unseemly party tricks.”

“People are unpredictable” Yakamochi turned and faced the source of the voice, damn this one had some major stealth skills. “What are ya, a ninja?” He placed the oranges back where he got them. “I’m just peachy” 

He stared at the card that appeared out of no where, a tarot card? “So, are ya saying I’m a fool or what? Never understand tarot cards” The card disappeared and Yakamochi was starting to be convinced that she was a ninja magician. 

“I certainly hope nothing happens”

“It’s true that our actions can be unpredictable, but with guidance it can be quite easy to figure out.”

Gabby chuckled to herself, meeting Yakamochi’s gaze. Something about the way she looked at him made it seem like she was looking past him, into something deeper.

“I am no ninja, or any other agent of the shadows. My name is Gabriella, and I am the SHSL Tarot Reader.”

The card flicks out of her hand again. The blond man on the card’s picture sure does look happy.

“I am not saying you are a fool, but if you aren’t careful you might end up playing the part. To be a fool... and to act like a fool. They seem so similar on the surface and yet they’re so very different at the core of it all. You can’t change what you are, but you can change what you do.”

She smiled behind the card.

“I hope everyone leaves here safely, but I’ve already predicted that our fates will be heavily tested here.”
