*cooking show presenter voice* It's a super simple recipe, all you're going to need is a shiny tuxedo and my design for a submarine car. You'll also need about seven pretty ladies, an aston martin- though a mercedes will also work if that's what you prefer- a base in a volcano and a lazer cigar. Add in some crocodile moccasins, a watch with a garrote in it and a vodka martini to taste and there's our man!
Jean and Hester are perfect mirrors for each other.
Hester is introduced as perfectly collected and on top of things whereas Jean is introduced as new, confused and a bit all over the place.
Hester got to where she is in MI5 slowly by holding her tongue and being polite, Jean gets where she is almost immediately by speaking out.
Hester, while she does offer advice, is very much out for herself, Jean leads all the typing pool girls in a protest on her first day.
Hester hides her hurt and builds up a shell so she can't get hurt as easily again, Jean is so optimistic that when Monty pushes her down she's devastated (rightly so tbh).
Hester is the mentor, Jean is the mentee.
Hester is an older 'spinster' figure, Jean is a young woman being pressured into romance.
Even in their movements, Hester is still and stiff and Jean flies around with incredible energy.

re: your monty misogyny tags on that disagreeing with favourite characters post - soooo true bestie. also more than his prevailing attitude to jean, i think people even more overlook how he treats hester as a woman who isn't young and hot (in his estimation). i'd go so far as to say that his behaviour there borders on full-on bullying, but it's so normal to dismiss older women that it goes way under the radar
yes this is EXACTLY what i was thinking about when i said that monty has moments of misogyny outside of the 'big one', and that these are the ones people generally seem to overlook. there are so many jokes towards or about hester that are essentially just misogynistic microaggressions. "we've got beauty, we've got brains, we've got... hester" comes to mind. yes it's funny but it's quite sad that 1) the first thing that comes to monty's mind when he sees jean and thinks about what he values in her is her beauty, and 2) that hester has no merit in monty's eyes, because she's an older, 'undesirable' woman. there are definitely other examples of jokes like that, but i actually also think monty's body language is another big factor. there are so many moments where he seems to praise jean just to one-up hester, like when hester tells jean to make the tea and monty overrides her, then gives her a very smug look. and to me it just reads as a show of (masculine) power whenever he does this. which is. actually a shocking amount of times
there was also a very meanspirited comment from monty to hester in the 2020 southwark version of mince where he implied hester was only being so rigid (i.e. actually doing her job) because she never got married ("you jealous you never made it up the aisle yourself?"). he does then backtrack and say there's no one good enough for her, but that in itself also feels like a bit of a jab, especially with a patronising "old girl" tacked onto the end of it. i think the issue is that monty doesn't think before he speaks, and misogynistic attitudes are so deeply ingrained in him because of social conditioning/upbringing that that's what is naturally programmed to come out. this is what i meant by misogyny being insidious. often it isn't just outright evil people perpetuating it, but also the people you consider 'one of the good ones'. so i do urge people to look out for these little moments in mince because you'll start to notice how entrenched even the simplest interactions are in the gender norms and prejudices of the time period

she hester on my leggatt till i Dear Bill, I'm afraid I've not got long to write, I'm off to Mary's, you know how she feels about bridge night. It's been a few days... I thought that I'd send a few lines
I have lots of thoughts about Hester and her relationship with the other members of the Basement Gang
Hester has far, FAR too much self respect to even consider herself friends with Monty- a person who constantly belittles and insults her. I can’t think of a single point in the show where Hester really seems to ‘like’ Monty. She constantly challenges and questions Monty in a way no other character (including Bevan) does, and I don’t think Monty would class himself as her friend either. They are completely different people who hold completely different views about the war. Hester knows the consequences of war and Monty just thinks it’s all a game to win. They aren’t friends and neither of them want to be friends.
By the end of the show, Hester and Jean are what I’d consider friends. Especially post Useful. But the relationship is not mother-daughter, it’s mentor-mentee. They both help the other in realising things about themselves and by Glitzy it seems like they are talking about more personal things- things that Hester would never have spoken about to her colleagues at the start of the show. But they’re just friends, friends in the way that women at the time had to stick together to survive in such a misogynistic, male-centric world.
Hester’s relationship with Charles is much harder to pin down. There are times when Charles is on Hester’s side versus Monty: the part in Making a Man when Monty calls Bill ‘just a trap’, and in the confrontation. But there are just as many times where Charles is on Monty’s side, or at least not on Hester’s: ‘oh, give us a break, Hester!’ before Dear Bill, and in the bloody tea scene where both Hester and Jean give Charles an opportunity to stick up for them but he does. So, I think whether Hester considers Charles a friend or not depends on whether he’s with or trying to be like Monty.

couldn't have put it better myself. i'm glad it isn't just me who is sad about the way hester has been & continues to be mischaracterised by this fandom. the 'motherly' role people force upon her (especially if its in relation to monty and charles - i don't agree with it when it comes to jean either but i can forgive it more) is a discredit to the complex woman spitlip have succeeded in writing where many many other writers have failed. tropeifying her like that, even if it's 'just fanon', feels like a step backwards in so many ways. thank u anon for putting so concisely how and why she differs from that stereotype
