Signal Boost: Robbery Recovery
On December 13th 2017. Our house was robbed taking around $16,000 in electronics and personal goods. Luckily no one was home, but due to the severity of the situation we are trying to leave as soon as we can. The thieves have come back twice (1/25 and 1/28) and we are certain that we are being targeted by them.
We are raising funds for moving, items not covered by insurance, financial assistance for Natasha (who through a loophole, was not covered by our insurance), financial assistance for Rachel whose car died the same week as the robbery, and the cost of all the security equipment we’ve had to buy to protect our home.
Unfortunately, our insurance would not cover Natasha for her $3,394 loss. Any additional items that were not covered we will list once we have spoken with insurance; for items to be covered under our insurance, original receipts and very specific photographs are required to prove you owned the item and that it was in your possession. As you can imagine, it is very difficult to prove with items received as gifts and items bought several years ago— so not all of our items will be covered We have also had to buy safety and security systems for our home to provide some peace of mind during the remainder of our time at our town home.
Fortunately (or unfortunately depending on how you look at it), these new security measures have caught the burglars twice one camera; once attempting to reenter our unit and a second time trying to scope out our back door. In both cases we were home.
Rachel’s car also died unexpectedly three days after the robbery and on top of saving money for replacing stolen items and moving, she also needs to save for a new vehicle.
Three of us are working artists/designers and heavily rely on our computers for work, as well as Corwin (Tasha’s boyfriend who was staying with us at the time of the robbery) and Gabi needing their computers for their graduate studies. We all lost a lot of personal items and information from our computers and to top it off, Rachel and Natasha also had their hard drives stolen— leaving them without their design portfolios, work from college, and photographs of pets, vacations, and family.
We are seriously traumatized by what happened and our sense of security is almost non-existent. Time will tell if the people who robbed us will face justice, but we are hoping with some financial help and moving assistance, we can relocate and begin to work past this whole mess.
