Return of gigs at the deck, I am going to have drug flashbacks . All in fun haha, I am excited for this show
SCHIZOID - DATIN SATAN DEMO (1987)
Some classic hardcore punk from Newfoundland . This demo got the songs from the beer thief ep on it, as well as a bunch of others. It’s fast and it’s very influenced by thrash so the riffs are gnarly and for the rockers . At times the singer kind of sounds like Choke from Negative fx / Slapshot Hahaha ha . To me this is the first band from here that REALLY made some good shit. Important history :)
SKAVEN FROM OAKLAND
Man this band is the actual definition of underrated. This video is the songs from their split with dystopia which has some of the tracks from the aftermath compilation album. I think much like dystopia, this band combines so many different styles and creates something truly unique in their music that can’t be replicated. There’s elements of sludge, crust, grind and a few types of metal. The result is very gritty all around in the best way possible. This side of this split is great and has some really great thrashy parts. The drums after the sample on plague wind go crazy. Also, on the song “fleshy curse” it starts with this super overly phased out bass intro . They have another release which I’m quite fond of, their S/T also called “flowers of flesh and blood” which still has those heavy hitting parts but it also has a lot of like “epic” parts for lack of a better word and has some very beautiful and eerie guitar parts that drone on and sound super bleak. Also on “Severed”… that shining sample Over THAT INTRO RIFF??? Fuck man 10/10 band so criminally slept on .
WORD ON THE STREET, FROM HALIFAX NS
Ripping fast hardcore FFO No Tolerance or Straight Ahead . These songs are the first three songs from the Street Sprit 7” that came out in 2014. Great ep. I think the live recording here sounds sick
DEMO FEST 25’
Demo fest is a really cool concept where you have a couple of months to record and submit a demo, All of the demos (over 70) were released on December 21st as a fundraiser for Solidarity Across Borders, which is a Montreal based migrant justice network. Read about it here and consider donating :) Anyways this post is about my favourite demos, I listened to almost all of them over the last couple weeks. there was some really good shit.
RECALL - DEMO II
Demo II
YUP recall continues to be the best band in Canada. This shit rocks . Raw ass punk.
TRENCHCOAT - DEMO
DEMO
Another heater from Montreal. I think recall is the best band in Canada right now but I think this is the best demo that came out of this whole fundraiser BY FAR. Absolute psycho music. Very fast and MEAN as fuck. Reminds me of human target from Winnipeg. I actually had a dream that I was reading the liner notes on this and that my friend nat played guitar in it. That has nothing to do with how good this is I just thought it was funny.
INVISIBLE LINES - DEMO
Demo
This is some sick hardcore from Montreal that has some powerviolence leaning parts. It’s pretty brutal. The person doing vocals sounds like their voice is about to break at a lot of points but it never does and that is so awesome to me. Great riffs on this thing too.
POLARITY CRISIS - DEMO
DEMO
Man this one is so good too. Freaky ass raw punk. A lot of riffs on here scratch that rocker fist in the air itch that I am always seeking, especially the one beat riff on the first song and the first riff on the second song. FUCK YESSSS WOO. No clue where this band is from. Very mysterious. Raw as hell.
IT CHOOSES YOU - DEMO
Demo 25'
Awesome band from St. John’s, Newfoundland that some of my friends play in. it’s fast, raw and Rae’s vocals are really really good . POSITIVE CORE
Ok that’s it also shoutout to bastard idol, contingency one, synaptic isolation syndrome and honestly most of these demos on here I wanted to write about them all but I’m too lazy for that alrigjt then
Deleted Instagram again. I want to be more active on here and reply to messages so I am turning notifications on so hopefully I see a message faster and not like a week after it’s sent haha sorry. Anyways I’m gonna make a post about my favourite demos from demo fest, everyone who participated killed it
The Electric chair / physique split is like the void / faith split for gen z
My emo band with @fallingintotheatlantic and @lakergirlslunchdateatcarlsjr dropped a little ep :) we wrote these songs almost two years ago and have been sitting on them forever. Nat recorded them onto tape a couple months back. Writing these was fun and playing them is a nice change from playing hardcore all the time for years on end . Yay listen if you would like. I like the lyrics nat wrote on this one :)
