THIS PERSON IS INCORRECT, both on the premise and on understanding what March actually did, which is a brilliant clothing-as-character beat. and I'll prove it bc I have a 2160p SDR copy of the movie I encoded.
ONE: the buttons at March's cuffs would absolute not provide enough clearance for his cast. The buttons only open up the bottom 2 to 5 inches of the sleeve and only near the hem and depending on how its tailored, the sort of 'vent' it creates might not give enough space.
look at that chonker, they paper maiched the shit out of him. at some points, it's over an inch thick and looks even thicker around the hand and wrist. so at minimum, adding like 2 inches to the diameter (bc its enclosed all around so an extra inch on either 'side')
TWO: Holland literally did the smart and correct thing instead to protect all his pretty clothes: he ripped the seams.
this little thingie that comes with sewing kits is a seam ripper. it does what it says on the tin and cuts through the thread connecting pieces of cloth.
This is absolutely the correct course of action. Holland is fashion-conscious ("What do you think?" "It's purple." "(audibly offended) It's maroon.") and has a lot of nice coats and jackets. Once the cast is off, it will take 10 minutes at a sewing machine to close the seam again. (citation: i have a sewing machine two feet away from me. it's quick.)
If he just opened the buttons and tried to jam that cast into the sleeve, he is way more likely to damage his clothes because the extra pressure on the fabric plus one snag on a door handle or something, and it'll cause a tear instead of the tidy seam rip.
actually I found a spectacular detail. COMPUTER, ENHANCE.
See those little dangly bits? Those are the threads left behind from using a seam ripper. So Holland had enough patience and care to do this to every coat/jacket he wears in the movie post-cast-ification, but did not take the extra time to pluck out the remnant threads or to use a brush to pull them out.
I fucking love that the wardrobe people left this detail in, especially when its almost invisible outside very specific shots and at specific resolutions. Everyone who touched this film loved it.
