How to look for indie comics from Black creators!
As you may know, there was recently a DC Comics boycott as a part of the DCSoWhite movement since DC has not had a mainline ongoing solo with a Black lead for over 1200 days. You can read more about this here, here, here, and here. The boycott has been cancelled (link), but that doesn't mean we can't still show support for Black comic creators!
One of the things the movement called for fans to do was to "[Support] Black creators through independent and creator-owned projects." So this post is meant to provide tips on how to do this.
Check out other works of Black creators you're already familiar with
The Black comic creators you're already a fan of who have made comics for DC or Marvel have likely also made comics for other publishers too. You can usually find out about other comics they've worked on through their Wikipedia page, social media pages, and their own website if they have one. And it's a good idea to follow their social media to learn about any of their projects in the future!
Look through indie publisher websites
A great way to find out about indie comics is to check out indie publishers' websites. There will almost always be a page on their websites with all their comics so you can easily look through them and the creators will be listed so you can look into the creators too. This is one way to find out about Black comic creators who you might not already be familiar with.
The publishers that are listed as examples in the webpages linked above are Image Comics, BOOM! Studios, Vault Comics, Ignition Press, and Stranger Comics.
Check out existing lists
There are already lists online that specifically recommend Black creators to check out and comics by Black creators. You can also find recommendations and lists on social media. This is another great way to find out about Black comic creators you're not yet familiar with.
Speaking of lists, I would like to point you to this post by @bimboopo which includes a list of many Black webtoon creators which you can go check out!
Hopefully this guide will help people find out about more comics by Black creators. Support these creators by reading, buying, and talking about their comics. And even if the boycott is over, still make sure to sign the petition.
not to be a comics elitist or whatever the fuck but if you haven’t read x-force you truly do not know anything about rictor as a character
this sounds more aggressive than i intended but it’s more like
what you have to understand is that xfi (at least the parts that don’t just present him as an unflattering caricature of himself) is like, largely set in one of the lowest points in his life. like, right in the middle of a big ol’ depressive episode. he’s not himself. you can see flashes of that in the moments where he gets angry, when he defends himself, when he reminisces about something he’s lost, but other than that it’s just… i dunno
but if you’re really looking for what defines him as a character, it’s pretty much all in x-force. that’s where you’ve got to go if you want to see him happy, or proud of himself, or hopeful. if you want to know about his relationship with ‘star, that’s all in there too - they loved each other, they looked after each other, they were friends who did everything together. you don’t get that in xfi. what you get in xfi is a bunch of cheap homophobic jokes and stupid straight person love triangle bullshit that never should’ve won a glaad award and certainly shouldn’t be praised to this day as some kind of pinnacle of representation. it sucked. pad wrote them like they hated each other, when they really don’t.
but here are some things about rictor: he’s strongly, fiercely proud of himself. even when he has his doubts or low moments, he knows who he is and where he’s from and he’s not ashamed of it. he’s independent, and sometimes it takes a while to earn his trust, but he loves his friends and he loves shatterstar.
he’s not only a powerful mutant, he’s also a capable tactician and team leader, and most of all he’s a survivor. he has a complex relationship with his family and a strong sense of right and wrong, and he desperately wants to redeem himself, to prove he’s a good person and that he can choose his own path, regardless of how he grew up or what people assume of him.
he’s smart - good with computers, good with mechanical stuff, academically and emotionally intelligent in a way he doesn’t usually show off. when he was a kid all he wanted to do was read books (this is a thing he says in canon, pretty much word for word); he didn’t choose his powers, didn’t choose to be a mutant or an x-man, but he rose to that challenge and learned to love that about himself anyway. his scenes in x-force are often full of internal debate about his own philosophy - he hates violence, and questions every order cable gives the team, and a large part of his character arc is about wanting to be better (morally) than his father and the father-figures that followed. he actively questions what masculinity means to him, but struggles with his own self-image in the face of it. despite all that he’s a mutant who cares strongly about his community, and understands in the end that sometimes you have to fight to defend yourself.
he’s more “fun” than most people give him credit for - if you’ve only seen him in xfi you might not know that he’s really fashion-forward, that he puts a lot of care into his appearance and that you can basically judge his confidence and mood at the time on what he’s wearing. he’s been seen going out dancing with his teammates. like shatterstar, he watches a lot of tv - throughout the series they’re shown marathoning reality tv, playing video games, and listening to music on mtv (he and ‘star were particularly fond of yo! mtv raps, and are confirmed fans of the beastie boys).
i could honestly go on forever about all this stuff, and he and ‘star as a couple deserve a whole separate post tbh, but this is already embarrassing so like… idk
anyway i’m like… i’m not saying that there’s not important stuff about him in xfi, but reading that is like meeting him on a bad day - there’s just so much more to him and since i’m really into him as a character (not sure if you’ve noticed) i wish more people could see that.
It’s been a while since I brought back this post but I need to do it because honestly Rictor is much more than a brooding sad man.
the other underrated best bit about wolf hall is that henry viii is clearly written as a outright monster but no-one told damian lewis who half the time is playing henry straight for comedy. and that's what makes henry more of a monster because he's so fucking oblivious about how awful he is and no-one else at court is laughing. but also. he's prancing around his chambers talking about dressing up like a shepherd boy or one of the magi when he goes to meet anne of cleves because she obvs won't recognise him, and that is comedy gold.
by 2036 all boys will realize theyre actually girls and all girls will realize theyre actually boys except ☝️those that realize they are neither. complete transgender world domination
thomas cromwell: you see that old man? he’s the baron of whocaresbury, but his creditors are just waiting in the shadows for him to die. they’re going to ruin his heirs. you see, he just can’t stop buying clothes sourced through ghent
gregory: father, sir, may i please hear one story about the first 30 years of your life?
thomas cromwell: the tragic thing is, most of the clothes use a cheap red dye
This is a perfect time to read the brilliant and unforgettable graphic novel(s) Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi, about growing up in Iran during and after the Iranian Revolution, and the rise of the oppressive theocracy that persists to this day.
Both graphic novels are available free online (Persepolis vol. 1, Persepolis vol. 2)
It also was adapted to a wonderful film (co-directed and co-written by the author) which is available to watch for free on Sundance Now (sign up for the free trial)
This can't be fucking real oh my god.
lie to me
a good girl.
Galadriel says happy pride
i'm crying about that tom holland interview he really got radicalized after filming Nolan's Odyssey of all things and then called marvel producers for spiderman 4 and basically yelled at them to get their act together simply because he realized "oh my god... movies can be made efficiently and for a reason"
here's the article link and a video where he talks about the comparison
this is gonna get me put on a list somewhere but if Rhaenyra and Daenerys could have met they would not end that interaction as friends Rhaenyra would be putting Daenerys in the SJW cringe compilation
this is such a good way of putting it she has no family and everything she knows about their legacy was from viserys who was romanticizing everything to cope and NOT a reliable source so dany is running around saying things like i must be like my ancestors and end slavery. because she just does not know
These are all so good
Persepolis, Marjane Satrapi
in happier pride news i actually found this deeply heartwarming
that's solidarity baybeeee
Further context: Durham city council (Reform UK) cut funding and support for Pride. The Durham Miner's Association and other trade unions raised enough money for Durham Pride 2026 to go ahead - a direct call back to when Lesbian and Gays Support the Miners (LGSM) raised money for mining communities when Margaret Thatcher seized union funding during the miner strikes of 1984-85.
At the 1985 Labour party meet, the motion to support LGBT rights as a party was passed due to a block vote from mining unions.
Stephen Guy, the chair of the Durham Miners’ Association, said that when it became apparent Durham Pride was under threat, he took it upon himself to “encourage the trade union movement to step up and do the right thing, and stand shoulder to shoulder with the LGBT+ community […] They not only raised funds for us, but came to our communities, uplifted our spirits when they were down, and showed their solidarity.”
Solidarity between LGBTQ+ people and unions has saved an event denied ‘a single penny’ of council money
"What’s the point of supporting gay rights but nobody else’s rights. You know? Or - workers’ rights but not Women’s rights - it’s - I don’t know - illogical."
"There’s a lodge banner down in the welfare. We bring it out for special occasions. It’s a hundred years old. I’ll show it to you one day. It’s a symbol like this -
Two hands.
That’s what the labour movement means. Should mean. You support me and I support you. Whoever you are. Wherever you come from. Shoulder to shoulder. Hand to hand."
Been reading a lot of the 60s X-Men comics and man, whatever Warren had going on with Jean and Scott is funny.
