Zero waste
Mai if youāre like me and youāre thinking of ways to be zero waste, but you arenāt really sure where to start, itās all good! Iām learning to and Iāve come up with some ideas of how to do this without breaking the bank or throwing things away before itās time! So if youāre like me and you love to read and you have a tablet or iPad or iPhone, I believe Samsung also has this option but I donāt have Samsung so Iām not sure (let me know if you do) but books on them! There should be an app called ābooksā on your apple device and it is what it looks like, a book store! Or you could borrow books from your local library, or buy them used from thrift stores market place or a used book store, that way you can still get your books while cutting down on waste!
Next! Instead of plastic single use water bottles, get a reusable one (prices can vary on these) you can get them used as well, or if you buy them new itās a one time purchase (with hopefully no plastics) I use mine all the time and I love it!
Also bathrooms! Did you know deodorant can come in a cardboard container? If not now you do!! Zero waste and you donāt have to skip the deodorant, especially if you work in a hot building, and toothbrushes there are bamboo biodegradable toothbrushes that are soo much better for the environment!! And safety razors, I love mine (bambaw not sponsored) buy the blades and youāre set! Youāll never have to spend $15 on new razor blades again, the pack I got of enough to last at least two years, was like $5 !
And bamboo hair brush, itās a great option and again biodegradable! And toothpaste and mouthwash tablets!! They come in little glass jars and thereās so little waste involved with all these all you have to do is just bite them and brush like normal or bite them and sip some water and swish like normal!!
Now ladies this one is for you, period underwear, menstrual cups/discs, or reusable pads! All of these are great options and donāt use any plastic and no chemicals like formaldehyde!!
Also a great and easy switch is instead of using plastic silverware just use regular silverware! I know youāre thinking āwhat about washing it how is that zero waste?!ā Dishwashing soap but itās bar soap (yes that is a thing) and instead of a sponge use bamboo scrub brushes! And lastly (for now) instead of paper towels use old shirts or towels or wash cloths that are reusable and washable.
I know I made this long, and I still have more ideas, but for now Iāll leave you with these ideas and if youāre interested in asking questions or learning more please feel free to contact me
Got hungry cut a cantaloupe in half and got a spoon, veganism is great
Non-vegans from various oppressed groups: Vegans are all rich, white, cis/het, thin, able-bodied Christian men from the United States and veganism is a sham!
Vegans from same exact oppressed groups: Actually we exist and we donāt appreciated being erased, thatās really bigoted of you and weād love to talk to you about veganism and -
Same non-vegans:
Hi, acti! I got an email today from the place I get my toothbrushes from (brush with bamboo) saying that they just started making bamboo toothbrushes with fully bio/plant-based bristles! Seems like something you might like to share :)
Ah that is good news, most of the time the bristles are still plastic so Iām glad to hear that - Iāll keep a look out for them. Thanks for sharing.
Or like if "war on drugs" meant "funding addiction treatment and research"
whats with people seeing pictures of dairy cows on a farm and being like "omg look at them theyre so cute #vegan #ditchdairy"
what the fuck do you think they'd be doing if people weren't raising them for milk. think about that for 0.5 seconds where would these cute little cows be if they werent in a pasture being raised for milk. if there was no dairy how would these animals survive and who would raise them
Your right, people shouldn't be saying that they shouldn't be exploited and slaughtered because solely because āthey're so cuteā, that would be super iffy. They should (and in most cases do) ask people not to support the brutal exploitation and slaughter of these animals because they are sentient beings, and therefore deserve to have their rights recognized to be free of human use and suffering.
The main part of this post though is using the false premise of saying that Vegans want all domesticated animals to be released into the wild.. Using this false premise to defend the forced breeding, exploitation and slaughter of these "cute little cows". By asking people to consider if their actions align with their morals then they support this horrific industry, vegans are trying to reduce the demand for these "products" (milk and cow flesh) What vegans want is for animals to stop being bred. It isnāt a question of either they get eaten by wild animals, or by us. We donāt need to be breeding and eating them in the first place. Ā
We have to recognize that the idea of the world just magically turning vegan overnight and all the farmed animals being left to roam free is simply an absurd scenario. The world going vegan is a gradual process, by which the number of people boycotting animal products would increase slowly over time, thus meaning that farm animals were bred less and less to meet demand. The number of farmed animals walking this planet right now is directly relative to the number of people buying animal products. More people eating meat/dairy = more farm animals. More vegans = fewer farm animals. This is just supply and demand! No vegan is advocating for these domesticated animals to be sent out to the wild. And of course, the more animals like dairy cows that are rescued from this horrific exploitation and slaughter to live the rest of their lives in farmed animal sanctuaries in the process of this decrease of demand and eventual end of these industries happening the better!Ā

~ Hereās a link to testimonials of former dairy farmers. A quote from a former dairy farmer I found incredibly powerful is āIt is a deceptive place. Only the ones who are inside really know that. I am not talking about a one hour visit to the farm⦠Whoever is really inside, knows what kind of place it is. Itās hell. There is terrible suffering there⦠The screams of the mothers ⦠I still hear the sound. It wonāt go away. I keep thinking about it. Today I am a mother, and I donāt understand how people who say that they love animals donāt see it. Donāt understand it.ā and āAnd they cried and called for their babies. They call and call.ā And a fab piece on a former dairy farmer who amazingly turned his farm into a sanctuary and is now a plant-based farmer (here).

Look Iām all for talking to people about veganism, but it definitely comes to a point where I will block you if all your comments on my vegan posts are all about how youāve had your steak today or how good bacon eggs and sausages are, if you havenāt educated yourself and youāre trying to learn? Awesome!!! But if you say you educated yourself, and still say being vegan is wrong and feel the need to comment those things on my post thatās not cute, or trendy, or cool, itās so arrogant and rude and looking for someone to either get in an argument or just block you... this is how Iām feeling right now
āFarm workers are out in the fields now making sure we have food on our supermarket shelves. Farm workers are worried, just like all of us. It's scary out there. Non-union farm workers are especially worried. At least workers under UFW contract are getting informed about COVID-19, what to do and steps their company is taking to protect them. But most non-union farm workers we're talking to, especially those under labor contractors, are not getting any information. We've been reaching out to farm workers digitally, via the phone and text, and site visits to workplaces. We're concerned--very concerned.
Farm worker Jesus Zuniga told us, āAs of yet, we have not been informed about the coronavirus. We are working like we normally do. I am very concerned because at this company they don't care about us, they don't give us any information, no training. Schools have closed their classes. In our city, several events have closed, everyone is taking precautions to help combat this pandemic and here where we work we continue as if nothing is occurring. If I get sick, I stay at the will of God because they don't offer us a medical plan or other benefits.ā
Strawberry worker Marcelina Gonzalez shares, āIn my company they gave us a hygiene meeting on how to keep clean, but they never mentioned anything about the coronavirus -- they only mention we should wash our hands before picking up the product. Not having information from our employer about this virus can be a big risk for us to take the virus home.ā
Things are different at companies with a UFW contract. Wine grape worker Adelaida Mendoza works at Washington state's Chateau Ste Michelle. She says, āWhen we started hearing about the coronavirus, the company gave us a special training about how to protect ourselves from this virus. The company is worried about our health and they made a safety plan for us. They have put out hand sanitizer and sanitizing wipes in the lunch rooms. The company is going to implement social distancing practices to try to avoid the spread of illnesses. They always have soap, water, and paper towels to clean our hands and disposable cups to drink water. I feel safer because I have the RFK medical plan, sick leave and personal hours to take time off in case I get sick.ā
We are receiving reports from other UFW contract companies outlining the plans put in place. But there is more that needs to be done. We are taking every step to make sure ALL farm workers are protected. We sent a letter to all growers and ag organizations asking that they take proactive steps to ensure the safety of farm workers, who are laboring through this crisis to keep supermarkets stocked and America fed. Your donation will help us continue to safeguard the men and women doing this essential work.ā

Iām seeing a lot of posts like this one doing the rounds on social media right now, and I just want to take a moment to try and discourage my fellow vegans from taking up this line of argument. Yes, there is of course conversation to be had about the relationship between eating animals, pandemics, factory farming and the over-use of antibiotics. Iām completely in support of posts bringing that up and educating on those topics, and Iāve seen many great examples of exactly that. But Iāve also seen far too many posts just like this one, which are looking to blame more than educate.
Before you post, please ask yourself what the goal of what youāre sharing actually is. Ostensibly this is telling people to go vegan, but realistically that isnāt its goal. The message is āthis is your fault, not ours.ā While you may think thatās true, is this in any way a helpful sentiment during the current crisis? Is what is being communicated here likely to make anyone consider leaving animals off their plates? Does anyone honestly believe that someone having to isolate and worrying about rent and food insecurity is going to be swayed to our cause by telling them that theyāre pro Corvid-19, because of a connection between animal agriculture and pandemics that theyāre probably not even aware of?
This is a complex situation, people are frightened and the world as we know it is changing rapidly. This is a time for thoughtful dialogue and nuance, whereas these posts tend to be about as subtle as a sledgehammer. Donāt think that people donāt remember what is said to them at times like this, and the last thing the animal rights movement needs is a bunch of new enemies. We should be reaching out to people, not condemning them.
