finished the brothers karamazov, disorganized thoughts:
i can't believe i didn't realize the fact that ilyusha serves as a parallel to zosima/zosima's brother until the very last chapter 😭 (when they mentioned how his corpse strangely didn't smell.) alyosha throughout this book is always making a dedicated effort to doing good deeds, even when it's difficult, even when there's no clear reward in sight. when zosoma's decaying body produced smells (and many people of the monastery immediately turned on him), aloysha's grief seems to come from the fact that this good man who he revered for his way of living was not "rewarded" for this by god. there was no miracle waiting for him, though alyosha is beyond convinced that he was a godly man. (and the people abuse his memory hours after his death, remembering him as a sham and nothing more. however, aloysha does not fixate on this over the lack of bodily miracle, at least according to the narrator). but just as zosima's brother inspired zosima, so too did zosima inspire in aloysha the commitment to active love. and later on, aloysha passes this commitment onto the schoolboys (children!) after ilyusha's funeral. in stark contrast with zosima's death, ilyusha is celebrated after his death. his body doesn't smell, but nobody is fixated on this fact! only the narrator mentions it. this "miracle" is of no importance. instead, aloysha and the schoolboys gather around ilyusha's memory, and take the time to remember ilyusha with the highest respect and love (though in the past they abused him), and swear that no matter where they go in the future, they will remember this moment where they stood together and loved ilyusha and each other. unlike with zosima, they were not waiting for ilyusha's dead body to create a miracle, instead they embraced his memory (and the "miracle" occurs unnoticed, unimportant, merely to symbolize the true value of the display of love happening around it.) and even still there's no clear miracle waiting as a reward for this moment of good. we are not given any insight into what happens next after the funeral - no implications on what the schoolboys will do next, whether ivan lives or dies, what will happen to dmitri and grusha and katya, no future, no nothing. it's as if the book cuts off right there. there's nothing to tell because we have caught up to the present, and the past was only accessible through memory. (the strange, illogical nature of the narrator's existence i'll scrutinize some other time.) this is because whether there is some grand miracle in the distant future, as a result of this love, does not matter. as aloysha says, whether they become bad or good people in the future doesn't matter in this moment. only love in its tangible forms- the present, active choice, and the memories made possible by these choices, makes its own value. aloysha (in this last didactic speech of the novel) proclaims the importance of having good memories in one's childhood. memories are proof of tangible actions and experiences that have taken place. even if they're fallible or not understood in the moment, their core essence serve as guides in the present (adult). smerdyakov, who never had a single good childhood memory, vs dmitri, who until the very end remembered the one kind adult of his childhood home who gifted him some nuts, vs aloysha, who forever clung to his one memory of his young mother, and kissed the earth at the height of his grief.
good book about how time is a circle, people are a circle, and how to navigate the world responsibly when it's all too tempting to cheat present duties (higher or not) in favor of pernicious abstractions.
Collins is gone.
Namaygoosisagagun First Nation/Collins has burned to the ground. The entire community is nothing but ashes after being quickly consumed by wildfires. They did not have any support from emergency services, and no one offered aid. The community saved themselves by escaping into boats because no one came.
Mishkeegogamang and Cat Lake have lost power. Families are ending up in shelters with nothing. Armstrong, Lac La Croix, Whitesand, Gull Bay, Lac des Mille Lacs are currently in the fires path and all members are being evacuated.
All this loss, all this devastation, and it was entirely preventable.
After steadily underfunding wildland firefighting and purposefully excluding Indigenous wildland firefighters and Indigenous wildfire organizations from wildfire operations, firefighter training, decisionmaking, and resource exchanges, in 2025, Doug Ford slashed the forest firefighting budget.
It's hard to ignore his decision to cut funding and leave us out of adequate fire training (even though we've lived with forest fires for thousands of years—far longer than settlers have been in Canada—and made sure fires like the ones we're all seeing today were prevented through kinisitotēn) when, despite making up less than 5% of the population, we account for 42% percent of all wildfire evacuations in Canada.
And when we are successfully evacuated, we face discrimination and racism—like Kashechewan—because it's always been easier to blame us than it is to blame the true culprit: denialism, corportate greed, and colonization.
The people of Collins and every other impacted community deserve better.
Right now, the AFN is currently accepting donations to help Collins First Nation. If you're able to, please consider donating.
ONWA (Ontario Native Women's Association) is another great place to donate to. They have outreach vans going to motels and inns and offering food, water, resources, and cultural support to those impacted by the wildfires.
Other places to consider donating to are Mikinakoos Emergency Fund, Red Cross, True North Aid, Indigenous Climate Action. You can also send donations directly to Whitesand First Nation via e-transfer ([email protected]) and they request that you add your full name in the e-transfer comment section to receive a tax receipt.
*Before sending money, verify that the appeal appears on an official First Nation, Tribal Council or registered charity channel.
If you can't offer financial support, please consider donating items of need. Moontime Connections is currently accepting drop-off donations. If you live in the Thunder Bay area, Namaygoosisagagun Health Office is also taking in donations! They can also bemailed to Superior Inn Hotel & Conference Centre at 555 West Arthur Street, Thunder Bay, ON, P7E 5P8.
items needed are: food, diapers, medical masks, men’s and women’s joggers (all sizes), children’s clothing (newborn to size 14), children’s shoes, summer clothing, men’s clothing, toiletries (lotion, Vaseline, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, conditioner, soap, deodorant, etc.), strollers, adult depends-all sizes, dog & cat food

if you have procreate, sanderling is an awesome sketching/lineart brush. it's the closest feeling i've gotten to using a ballpoint pen on this app. highly recommend!
mega man dress-up game where you get to paste cute stickers on the robot masters and put patterns on their armor
time man's circumstances are silly to me. i know he wasn't finished, but realistically, why would you even begin building the sentient robot BEFORE figuring out the time theory they're supposed to utilize? it's like building a million-dollar boat out of materials you're still in the process of verifying the buoyancy of. very strange choice in multitasking.
rock in rockman-san lowkey gives me gender feelings tbh. Like in a "i've been a guy and been known as a guy for so long and i don't care so much that i NEED to change and atp it'd be kind of inconvenient" kinda way.
i like giving gemini severe derealization issues but nobody realizes that's what's going on they just assume the reason why they never pay attention to other people is because they're simply that self-absorbed (which. y'know. isn't NOT true.) and gemini for their part doesn't have a reason to bring it up because a.) they struggle to recognize other people as sentient agents and not background objects as it is, and b.) they're not explicitly conscious of it either. it's just their normal
some gemini related things
everyone makes fun of star man for having the massivest ego of his line but i think the title should actually go to gyro man. it's just that unlike star, gyro doesn't feel the need to be as loud about it bc he's just that completely self-assured in the fact that he's Better than you. star thinks he's hot shit but he also thinks most people are hot shit. gyro assumes the average person is ontologically beneath him by default.
i am not a ship guy at all. but my one and only exception so far has been sparkgem qpr. regardless of your personal interpretation of the characters or the nature of their relationship i think more ppl should consider how their canon traits both foil and mirror each other's!
you've got spark, who is dependent on others to be happy, trying ver best to show a friendly face and be useful and needed at all times (always charging ver friends, hates being alone.) and then you have gemini, who seems almost untouchably independent, being so absorbed in their own reflection and all. but both share this same theme of lurking isolation. fascinating!! and nobody talks about this! (probably bc they're two minor characters with like 200 words worth of characterization crumbs each but shh)
i'd like to think, to the astonishment of everyone around them, they'd quickly grow to understand each other more than anybody. they'd be each others' first best friend. my sweeties :]
ranking the fifths by how easy they are to draw while my wrist takes a nap
crystal: extremely easy on account of being Orbs. occasionally the big forehead orb can throw a wrench into composition but it's rarely a problem
napalm: round and blocky. has nubs instead of hands. head missile requires foreshortening sometimes but it's not a huge deal.
wave: not difficult to draw but can be challenging to pose in an interesting way since he doesn't have the best articulation. (also the torso armor can be a bit finicky to get right)
star: that damn shield can make posing him a pain. but the more annoying thing is the star on his helmet. it's the perfect size to inconveniently block out his eyes from certain angles. but otherwise he's not so bad
gyro: his head has a lot of Stuff on it. he's got a weirdly shaped mask too (since i take inspiration from ariga for his design.) another challenge is having to account for his rotor blades in terms of posing/composition. surprisingly his feet are pretty easy to draw
stone: his head is so difficult to get right for some reason!! that jaw especially. also those shoulder armors are a little convoluted. everything else about him is pretty painless.
gravity: upper body proportions are tricky. so is connecting his upper body to his lower body. i have a very specific image of his face and sometimes i just don't succeed
charge: something about that rail plow on his chest fucks me up EVERY time omg!! everything else about him is fine but i cannot escape it..
The only difference between me (someone who draws) and someone who wishes to draw is simply that I draw. There's no magical quality someone who draws or sculpts or sews or writes or composes or crochets or plays or codes or knits or sings or whatever has that people who aren't making art lack except willingness to make art. When I was younger (and to this day) I wanted to draw so bad. It gets under my skin. It bothers me deeply. Not having a pen in my hand. Not understanding how something was drawn. I was just so interested in it I could not contain myself. So all the frustration and discomfort and humiliation of learning something new and being bad at it was worth it to me and still is. I still make plenty of art that looks bad as I keep learning and trying things. I just tend not to post the things that look bad. If wanting to make art gets under your skin, I urge you to pick up the pen or the needles or the keyboard or the guitar or whatever art making tool of choice and make something. I promise there's nothing fundamental you lack. I promise there's no magic quality that makes someone an artist that you don't have. Of course there's nothing wrong with yearning. I'm just saying that the bridge between not being an artist and being an artist is just making art, not some secret artist ingredient that gets put in some people and not others. The one thing I hear constantly as an artist is "wow I wish I could do that". I hear it more than anything else. You can do it. The only "leg up" I have on you is just years of experience. Which you're never going to get if you never even get started. I used to look at other artists with such envy. I used to think they were just keeping secrets from me or were just more special than me, and that's why their art was better. But it was just learning and hard work I hadn't done yet between my skill and theirs. The more I draw and learn, the more I understand just making things was all I had to do to get where I wanted. And you can do that too!
friend rlly wanted me to draw him over this image
