Currently reading Pu Songling's Strange Tales From A Chinese Studio. This particular version was translated by an Englishman in 1908 and damn does it show. I'm not complaining (much), I'm grateful that Herbert Giles translated this into my language so I'm able to read it, but it's pretty entertaining the way he refers to every character as Mr. Surname and persists in calling the civil service exam a bachelor's degree.

#not complaining!#i get why he does these things #he wants to make sure the readers know which is the family name #and which is the given name #since it's traditionally the other way around in england #and he rightly assumes that most of his readers #in england in the 1900s #know what a bachelor's degree is and have never heard of the civil service exam #it still makes for an entertaining reading experience #to read chinese stories told in such an intensely english way #erica's life
