Merstede forever!! 🧜♂️
not a fucking merMAY but oh well. There's never too much Merstede...
stede as he enters the room: ooh what are you making can i see
ed, who’s excited about the new recipe he’s trying tonight, with the intent of saying “i’m putting together a miso glaze to go over the fish” but his mouth isn’t hooked all the way up to his brain right now because he’s concentrating on getting the glaze right: i’m a fish!
stede:
ed:
stede: :D
stede: nice! can i be a fish?
ed: yeah you wanna be saltwater or freshwater?
stede: um… what are the options for freshwater fish? i’m blanking
ed, putting down the miso glaze for a minute: uhhh….. well you got trout,
stede, thinking:
ed, thinking:
stede: or i could just stick—
ed: salmon, if you’re horny
stede: —might just stick with saltwater
ed: yeah let’s go with saltwater
stede: i think i could be an eel. that’s fun!
ed: oh you don’t wanna…? kinda figured you’d go for something flashier
stede: there’s plenty of flashy eels. blue ones, green ones,
ed: thought maybe you’d—like, maybe a clownfish? cuz the symbiosis, you’re a symbiotic guy
stede: maybe. could be! but then i’d—well, what kind of fish are you?
ed: i dunno, hadn’t thought about it. shark?
stede: ooh, that’s quite a difference in size, though. are you gonna eat me?
ed: no, fuck no, i’m gonna—we’re gonna hang out.
stede: but there’s—
ed: couple of fish.
stede: —if i’m symbioting with the anemone, i’m all hidden inside of it, you’re gonna get zapped!
ed: so symbiotate with me instead.
stede: well…it’s a tempting offer, but i’m not sure—
ed: babe i could give you so much more than that anemone. come and hide in my tentacles, c’mon.
stede: i thought you were a shark?
ed: i’m a new kind of shark.
stede: oh i see
ed: they just rolled me out earlier this week. i’m limited edition

We need to get this show back 🔥
Anyway, I know good things will come his way no matter what happens 💜
I was thinking about this before you mentioned it, but Taika feels like someone who wasn't meant to be famous becoming famous.
It clear he didn't intend to become the spokesperson for Indigenous media, but he did because Hollywood kind of can't handle more than one famous minority at a time. And he has understandly expressed some frustration at this. But he HAS stepped up by executive producing and funding a ton of Indigenous projects (maori and Native American).
He doesn't seem to have the right personality to tolerate the level of bullshit that fame, and especially Hollywood, requires. And no single artist should be required to represent all of anything. He's one flawed dude who makes good movies, and he speaks off the cuff. He's said shit I don't like, but a lot of it reads as someone who is just talking or writing his way through something and is not fully informed or cognizant of the specific issues - which he has actually addressed, though of course by that point the whole thing has gotten away from him. The scrutinizing of every Instagram or Twitter like and trying to extrapolate a whole psychological profile of the guy is a bit weird.
I really appreciate the work he has done. Reservation Dogs wouldn't exist without his support, and he's obviously not some producer stepping in to shape it himself. That in itself, regardless, is to be celebrated.
people want taika to be an activist by virtue of the fact that he’s an indigenous man who acknowledges the fact that he’s not white. thats already an extraordinary amount of pressure on one person just trying to make art he enjoys. add in the fact that he’s not allowed to fail, EVER? i love his work but i kind of hope he retires soon. seems like he wants to and i absolutely do not blame him
While it's true that it's unfair to expect Taika to be an activist because of who he is, what frustrates me about these critiques is that he IS an activist. But because his activism is focused on his home country, they don't 'count' to an international audience. (and by international I really just mean American, tbh)
I'm not blaming fans for this; American media doesn't cover the way he led an anti-racism campaign in Aotearoa (two, I think?) or how he's been part of campaigns to protect Māori lands from offshore oil drilling. Even aside from that, if he lands a keynote speaker role for a Hollywood event, he often uses it to talk about racism and then gets roasted in the media for it. I'm not sure if people generally understand the lengths he went to to hire local indigenous staff when making the Thor movies, or the time he put in to mentor those indigenous staff members.
He got slammed for that podcast last month when he was frustrated with people getting mad at him for not knowing everything about issues, when nobody outside Aotearoa makes an effort to know about Māori issues, but I think the point underlying that is that that's where his political energy is.
Honestly, most of the time, activism is most effective when people pick one or two causes to focus on, rather than trying to do everything. Waititi focuses on racism and indigenous issues in Aotearoa. And then people either don't care or don't know or think it doesn't count for anything.
