Your Role is Crewmate: Chapter 1
Summary:
Red and Purple are returning to Industria with a hull full of corpses, a haul full of nothing, and a certainty that their contract terminates here for a mission gone horrifically wrong. Purple has one more sleepless night to pass before they get to relive the worst day of their life. Maybe tasting MIRA’s boot won’t be so bad this time around with Red on their side… For Purple, that day never comes. Instead Purple wakes up at a pizza party where no one is dead. ——— There is a New Game mechanic in the alien imposter arsenal. With every reset they have a fresh opportunity to exterminate the Skeld for good. How do you destroy an enemy with unlimited chances to end you? And why is Purple the only one who can remember every time loop?
Chapter 1 - Loop 1.0: A Pizza Party Where No One Is Dead Anymore
The ship was always quiet. Sleep was always hard. The faint choke and warble of the breached storage hull grating its way through space travel was new, and also did not help with the sleep thing.
Try as they might, sticky gaze to the ceiling, Purple could not sleep. They simply stared as the steady hours of the night shaved away, jagged and alone. Purple could not pretend this level of insomnia was just another “same as always” on the ship.
This was the sticky sleeplessness of too many thoughts, and too few people, and too much hollow ache in their chest that was only starting to unfurl and crawl into their organs. Death made the ship quiet. Death made sleep hard.
A cam screen flickered and whined. It kicked Purple’s heart into high gear as they tore back their sheets and shot out of bed, eyes to the screen, scanning its shimmer for anything—tentacles, aliens, blood, Red’s blood, maybe.
The fizzle faded. A silent and stagnant medbay resolved on screen. A false alarm. Purple’s shoulders eased. They rubbed their visor and clambered back into the cot stuffed haphazardly in the corner of the security office. Purple’s gaze drifted back to the ceiling, and this ceiling above their bed was the same as always.
But by 2023, just two years of letting "nature take the lead" one can find 4,000 bees, with the number of different bee species doubling.
"A Scottish field once home to mono-crop barley has become a pollinator’s paradise after intervention from a local trust saw bumblebee numbers increase 100-fold.
Entitled Rewilding Denmarkfield, and run by the Bumblebee Conservation Trust, the project has also seen a sharp increase in the number of species passing through the rolling meadows after they were reclaimed by dozens of wildflower species.
The area north of Perth is about 90 acres in size, and surveys of bumblebees before the project began rarely recorded more than 50. But by 2023, just two years of letting “nature take the lead” that number has topped 4,000, with the number of different bee species doubling.
“This superb variety of plants attracts thousands of pollinators. Many of these plants, such as spear thistle and smooth hawk’s beard, are sometimes branded as ‘weeds’. But they are all native species that are benefiting native wildlife in different ways,” Ecologist Ellie Corsie, who has been managing the project since it began in 2021, said.
“Due to intensive arable farming, with decades of plowing, herbicide, and pesticide use, biodiversity was incredibly low when we started. Wildlife had largely been sanitized from the fields. Rewilding the site has had a remarkable benefit.”
Similar increases have been recorded in the populations of butterflies, with a tripling in the number of these insects seen on average during a ramble through the field.
The numbers of both insects are now so high that Rewilding Denmarkfield offers bee and butterfly safaris to visitors.
Local residents told the Scotsman that on spring and summer days, the field is awash with color, and hums with the sounds of bees and birds. Even as multiple housing developments expand around the Denmarkfield area, the field is a haven for wildlife."

How to Take Care of Yourself When You Have A Stomach Bug
A lot of you have been asking me to do a "how to take care of yourself when you're sick" post. There's a lot to that ask, so I'm going to be breaking it up. You can read the one I did on colds here.
This post will be about taking care of yourself when you have nausea/vomiting/diarrhea. Those symptoms aren't limited to just the infectious kind of stomach bug, so take this as more general knowledge.
When we are talking about the infectious kind of stomach bug, you want to be very careful about cleanliness. Wash your hands with soap and water (notably, not hand sanitizer in this case- many GI pathogens just laugh at hand sanitizer) every time you go to the bathroom or vomit. If you are sick, do not handle food other people will eat. If you are the only person who can possibly handle food and there is no way around it, wash your hands extremely well, wear nitrile gloves, and cook any food you have touched thoroughly.
Nausea/Vomiting:
Nausea is the sense of discomfort in the abdomen, chest, or throat that often accompanies vomiting. You can have nausea without vomiting too. It can come from things like infectious stomach bugs, but it can also come from things like motion sickness, chronic GI illness, emotional distress, or side effects from medications. Nausea is multipurpose like that.
Generally the biggest thing with anything GI is that you want to stay hydrated. With vomiting, it can be hard, especially if you are vomiting frequently. Always start by waiting about 30-60 minutes since the last episode of vomiting, then taking very small sips of plain water every ten minutes or so. If you vomit again, start over. If you can't hold down plain water for 24 hours (or less if you have other symptoms of dehydration like very dark, infrequent urine, or your skin stays tented when pinched) seek medical care. You should also seek medical care if there is blood in your vomit (red or "coffee grounds" appearance) or if you have a fever.
If you have nausea/vomiting often you should also see a healthcare provider about that. It's not normal to have nausea/vomiting regularly.
Once you're tolerating water though, branch out to other clear liquids. Clear liquids are things you can see through (or theoretically see through) and are liquid at body temperature. This includes black coffee and tea, juice without pulp, soda, broths, sports/electrolyte drinks without resin (not cloudy), gelatin, and popsicles.
Once you're doing well on clear liquids, move to full liquids. These include everything listed above and also milks, puddings, thin yogurts, ice creams, and custards without chunks.
Once you're doing well with full liquids, move on to pureed foods (like pureed soups without chunks, juices with pulp, and smoothies), or if you're really feeling good move on to soft foods like mashed vegetables.
This progression helps give your stomach time to rest and gradually build up tolerance to foods. Most people can go for a many days as long as they're getting fluids with calories and electrolytes, so don't worry about protein/fiber/vegetables/vitamins as much in the acute phase of nausea/vomiting.
There are a lot of things you can do to reduce nausea and make you more likely to tolerate liquids.
Tasting/smelling things:
Ginger is pretty good for nausea. You can chew or suck on raw ginger (which is pretty intense for most people) or get ginger chews or tablets. You can also consume strong ginger tea hot or iced. Notably, you generally have to taste the ginger instead of just swallowing it.
Mint is also a good option. You can eat mint candy or smell peppermint oil.
Smelling isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol works well too. They sell alcohol wipes for prepping skin prior to injections, and these are super convenient (and often pretty cheap) ways to carry around isopropyl alcohol.
Coca Cola. This one is less about taste and more about the phosphoric acid content and carbonation in Coke. Because of this, it does need to be brand name or it won't work. Phosphoric acid is a great nausea reducer. Do not flatten the Coke prior to drinking. The bubbles are actually really good for nausea too. You do have to basically continually sip it for it to work.
Other sodas/Seltzer water. For the bubbles.
Other strategies:
Hot water. Sipping water or tea that is as hot as you can stand can very temporarily relieve nausea. Like with the Coke, you have to do this pretty much continuously.
Pressure points: pressing on the inside of your wrist can help. Generally the bands designed to do this don't put enough pressure on the spot, so try on your own and experiment with how much pressure you need.
Heating pad: this is more for abdominal pain/cramping, but having a sensation like heat or cold can provide some physical distraction and improve nausea.
Cool damp wash cloth: On the face or back of the neck.
Very hot baths/showers: This is mostly useful for cannabis hyperemesis syndrome.
OTC Meds: Emetrol. This is just phosphoric acid. If Coke is working for you, just use that, it's cheaper and you can take it more often.
Bismuth subsalicylate: Pepto-Bismol. Works by reinforcing the mucous layer in the lining of the stomach and reducing inflammation. It also "collects" (adsorbs) bacteria like H. pylori and prevents it from doing damage. It also thickens poop to treat diarrhea. Don't take with aspirin or if you're allergic to aspirin. Ask before taking with other NSAIDs like ibuprofen.
Dimenhydrinate: Dramamine. This is a first generation antihistamine, which blocks histamine in the part of the brain that causes nausea. Contrary to popular belief this works for all kinds of nausea, not just motion sickness. Don't take it with other antihistamines, but you can take it with phosphoric acid or bismuth subsalicylate.
Diarrhea:
Diarrhea excessive liquid or very loose stools.
You can lose a lot of fluids very fast with diarrhea, so it's important to consume more fluids than you're losing. Drink a cup or two of electrolyte drink with every stool, if your stomach can tolerate it, and watch out for signs of dehydration.
A lot of people are afraid that if they stop diarrhea with diet or meds they won't "flush out" the bacteria, virus or parasite causing it. Because any infection is in the lining of the GI system and can't be flushed out, that's not how diarrhea works. That said, before starting an antidarrheal for acute diarrhea (diarrhea that comes on due to an infection or immediate problem), talk to a healthcare provider. Slowing the diarrhea has advantages in that it prevents dehydration and prevents the spread of certain pathogens. But if the diarrhea is caused by a pathogen that produces a toxin (like C. difficile) or if the diarrhea is caused by a food intolerance or allergy, you do want to get rid of the toxin or offending food. So you need to see a healthcare provider to rule this out.
If you have more than about 24 hours of severe diarrhea or can't stay hydrated, you should see a healthcare provider. They can give you better meds for diarrhea than over the counter, and antibiotics/antiparasitics if you need them. Other reasons to see a healthcare provider include blood your stool (which can be red or very dark black), a fever, a lot of mucous in the stool, pain in the abdomen that is sharp or hurts when you move, or significant changes to the color of the stool (like turning orange or white).
There are a number of things you can do about diarrhea:
Diet:
The BRAT diet is a diet to help make diarrhea more manageable. It is primarily a low-fat, low-fiber diet that classically includes Bananas, (white) Rice, Applesauce, and (white) plain Toast. You can also include things like skinless potatoes, white flour noodles, and lean meats without skin.
Caring for the Skin Around Your Anus:
One of the problems with diarrhea is that your butt hurts due to the constant irritation from the diarrhea itself and the wiping. There are a couple of things you can do here, and you can do basically one or the other at any given time. You can alternate them, though:
Protect the skin: Get zinc oxide cream and apply it after every stool. This protects the skin around the anus from moisture.
Soothe the skin: Use witch hazel or pramoxime pads to make the skin feel better. This makes the blood vessels in the area smaller and prevents pain.
Additionally to one of the above, try using baby wipes or water to clean yourself after pooping instead of dry toilet paper.
OTC Meds:
Bismuth Subsalicylate: Pepto-Bismol. Thickens stools. Don't take with aspirin or if you're allergic to aspirin. Ask before taking with other NSAIDs like ibuprofen.
Loperamide: This is an opioid that doesn't cross the blood-brain barrier. So it doesn't help with pain, but does slow down how fast food/liquids move through the digestive system. Ask a healthcare provider before taking this with other opioids.
The Egg Project
I'm a member of an advanced photography training community. My mentor creates challenges to help demonstrate certain concepts.
This one required shooting a pop-art-style egg photo to show how specular highlights change with hard and soft light.
This was the example image I was to emulate.
A specular highlight is just a direct reflection of the light source.
With hard light, specular highlights are perceived as brighter. To get hard light, the light source must be smaller (or more distant). So the reflection is smaller, but also more concentrated in intensity.
With soft light, the light source is much larger (or closer). So the intensity of the reflection is spread out over a larger area. So it is perceived as dimmer.
Think about looking directly at a flashlight versus shining it against the wall. The same number of photons are involved, but your experience of them is vastly different.
If you are shooting someone with glasses and the light is reflecting brightly, you can move your light much closer to reduce its apparent intensity.
I worked for 10 minutes at a time over a period of 4 days. I got some fake eggs so I wouldn't have to spend energy cooking. Frustratingly, they arrived with a matte finish. They would not take on a specular highlight at all. So I ordered some automotive clear coat and sprayed the fake eggs on my deck.
You may have noticed my context-less egg art on my deck railing in another post. It was drying in the sun.
The clear coat worked well, so I proceeded to glue the egg to some colored construction paper and tape it to the wall in my kitchen.
I don't have a top-down rig to shoot things from above, so I felt this was a creative and low-energy solution.
A bonus aspect of the challenge was to create a Photoshop composite in which I retain the shadows from the hard light example and the gradient specular highlight on the egg yolk. I can't decide if I like that or the soft light version better.
It feels nice to have accomplished something creative. I am struggling so much with boredom as I recover. And doing anything productive is physically challenging. But I've got my birds and now my egg.
I'm making art again and that is really helping.

Anyway here is my take:
I think trying to make a movie out of The Odyssey (not the story of Odysseus, but The Odyssey as in the poem) is a bit of a doomed endeavour as the structure of The Odyssey simply does not jive with the structure of the Hollywood movie
I think you COULD make a good movie out of the odyssey but would need to engage w the fact that it's a work which veers back and forth between fantasy and realism; that it's a story told out of chronogical order; and also that it is a Trickster Hero story first and foremost. It is perhaps best done as a comedy but with the occasional shocking swerve into graphic violence.
Here are my opinions:
The Odyssey should be a musical but ☝️only some of the time. When Odysseus is narrating? Musical. Penelope and Telemachus on Ithaca? 🙅♀️
Odysseus can break the fourth wall during the parts where he's narrating.
Movie opens with Odysseus inside Charybdis, whirling around and around clinging to a tiny raft and screaming. *Freeze frame* yeah, that's me. You're probably wondering how I got here.
In essence am I implying it should be tonally similar to the emperor's new groove but with ultra violence? Perhaps
The American mindset, that being distantly related to a farmhand who left in 18-something, somehow means you have meaningful claims to a country's citizenship is unironically insane.
That’s literally how German citizenship works currently lol
If my direct ancestors had registered at a German consulate when they came to the US I would already be going through the process of getting German citizenship. The only reason I’m not is that they were poor and didn’t have time for it.
Poverty cuts off one’s ties to the old country and makes people say you have no claim to it. Interesting, that.
You know until relatively recently German citizenship only followed the father? Meaning someone born outside of Germany to a German mother and non German father had no right to citizenship.
These rules are made up. They’re stupid rules. Citizenship requirements for residence somewhere are stupid. I’m not allowed to live in a place that I have cultural ties to and have family living there. Is that not stupid? Like what’s your requirements for who deserves to live in a place?
My partner’s dad is exploring Italian citizenship and interestingly enough his grandfather had to renounce his Italian citizenship when he was naturalized an American - but his grandmother didn’t have to because she was a woman. If your ancestor renounced citizenship you can’t claim descent but if they didn’t you can. So currently the family’s citizenship case rests on a sexist legal loophole from the early 1900s.
Ah, citizenship law. I hate it so much.
I wonder if that 'Only men' rule had something to do with conscription, since only men could be conscripted, what if they had two citizenship from opposing countries? But just a wild guess.
There’s actually an ongoing issue regarding a Togolese family descended from a German man married to a Togolese woman arguing the family isn’t entitled to German citizenship because Germany didn’t recognize interracial marriage at the time.
You know that’s a pretty bad look for a country supposedly trying to restore citizenship to as many people as possible to correct their past wrongs. I mean Germany does plenty of other stuff to have a bad look just like any other country but this is definitely one of them.
Oh btw I forgot to mention. If any of y’all are descendants of Jewish holocaust survivors, whether your ancestors were German citizens or not, you might qualify for German citizenship so you might wanna look into that to see if it applies to you. Doesn’t matter the gender of your ancestors either because they’re working on restoring citizenship to people who lost it because of the stupid woman rule.
masks as a signifier of deceit or attempting to hide something is Out. masks being used to represent stepping into one's own identity and not one foisted upon them is the new hit craze
masked character removing their mask in front of someone as a sign of trust: boring, overdone, reinforces the idea of the mask as the "fake" identity and the "real" face as the "true" identity
masked character's mask accidentally comes off in front of someone but they look away to avoid seeing their face as a sign of trust and respect: now we're cooking with gas
I told my little nephew that I'd wave at his airplane when it flew over my house today, and he very calmly and politely explained that it wouldn't be possible to see me due to the limitations of human vision. I said he just had to squint real hard, and he took a deep breath and went into the toddler version of "see, what you're not understanding–"
Sometimes I forget how much the weather affects my arthritis and then I do something like drive towards a thunderstorm and feel as my joint pain rapidly increases
the backrooms are simply not as scary conceptually if there is Something In Them
the whole reason why they're so unnerving is BECAUSE there's nothing in them!! because they're unrelentingly liminal and lonely and uncomforting. there shouldn't be a monster guy in there chasing you. you should glimpse other humans (?) from a distance but they walk away before you can close the gap and then they're gone. things should run away from YOU. do u get it
"and there was a MONSTERowooowwohhhh" the monster is isolation and banal beige sameness and uncanny valley architecture. you fool. you rube. you're putting a hat on a hat and the second hat is not only unnecessary but it ruins the first hat!!!!!!! "there's a monster in there" great so now it's just another place for a monster to be. ridiculous
fine I will concede: you CAN actually put something in there while maintaining the vibes, but it should complement the location instead of just being a generic scary guy you could put literally anywhere
