SPOILERS FOR RFTH EP4
Alone at the edge of the universe- RFTH animatic
I can’t get their final moments out of my mind .
Sorry in advance
I will miss these guys
technically there are four poems in this one :)
Noooo, piss girl, don't drink too much juice, nooo
I don't know how else to say this, but there is no reclaiming harry potter. there is no reclaiming the marauders. there is no reclaiming *any* works by JKR. you cannot be a fan of her or her stuff and be an ally, especially to the trans women of colour in your community. nope. It doesn't work like that
the fandom might not be ready for this conversation but despite being fun and entertaining, sfth’s portrayals of women in stories is not particularly feminist
starting with the characters who are more thought out and planned, maureen and sarge.
maureen is revered and admired and while not exactly hyper feminine, she is defined by the stereotype of the femme fatale and (even if not intentionally at least implicitly) sexualized
sarge is also admired, crushed on, and respected deeply which is i think in large part because of her masculinity
then with long form characters, they are most often defined by their roles in other peoples lives (friends, sisters, mothers, wives, girlfriends, love interests) rather than by their own stories.
mary in murders in space is defined by her mission to rescue her husband, even if she is absolutely brilliant, and that is acknowledged right at the end. cindy campbell is reduced to a cheesy rom/com love interest and daughter despite having way better main character development potential than john james. alice laura is defined by being jimmys sister and john david’s daughter, even if she can summon a portal to hell its not about her. amanda in cdiyw is clarissa’s supportive friend, clarissa spends the whole story trying to win mark back.
and i could go on.
the nature of sfth’s close knit unchanging group gives them the strength of knowing how to weave a perfect narrative together but it also is the weakness to their storytelling because they’re four cis men. they don’t have the lived experience to authentically represent other peoples’ stories
do they play women respectfully? yes. are their portrayals fun and engaging? yes. are the roles the women fall into within the stories limiting and a result of society being misogynistic? also yes.
this isn’t an unsolvable problem by any means. while the structural issue of being 4 cis men will remain, recognizing these patterns, studying up on feminist ideology, and staying mindful when coming up with characters and stories can go a long way for more feminist portrayals of women in their stories
Lock stock angst begins! Muareen is having a tough time lemmie tell ya
Also DOOMED YURI WOOOO
idc that improvised characters aren't meant to stay ;-; I want these weirdos back
First Tom steals things from audience members to use in scenes.
Now he kidnaps audience members to be in scenes.
If nobody stops this man, what will he do next?!?
(Please, nobody stop this man.)
how I feel when the entirety of the sfth fandom is thirsting over the boys
my honest reaction to whatever the fuck luke was doing in party quirks
Daily reminder: don't let the constant mental breakdown get you down
Hi so apparently people are being weird about sfth and their partners so
THIS IS YOUR REMINDER TO BE A NICE, NORMAL SFTH FAN AND TO ENGAGE NORMALLY WITH THE GROUP AND THE REST OF THE COMMUNITY IN A NICE AN NORMAL MANNER
To people saying Max Fosh need to come back. It’s a no. He was disrespectful and didn’t seem the understand the games. He didn’t match the boys energy at all. You could see it on their face that there were annoyed at some of the joke.
I really need anyone who shares this energy to take a step back and reflect.
First of all, it’s completely fine if you don’t like guests, or Max. I didn’t enjoy some of the guests either so I get it.
However, what’s not okay is speculating about how SFTH themselves feel about their guests, especially to justify your own feelings towards them, that’s just obnoxious. You don’t know them, you don’t know what they think. “You could see it on their face” no I couldn’t. They were performing, what you saw could have been a part of their performance.
I’d like to remind everyone that SFTH invite the guests themselves, and it’s their job to be good hosts and make their guests feel welcomed. You’re painting them as terrible hosts who don’t know how to be professional and helpful towards someone completely new at improv. Of course if any of the guests was hateful or crossed the line, they wouldn’t have to tolerate them, but Max surely wasn’t, they wouldn’t have posted his show at all if he had been.
I’d also like to ask everyone to be more hospitable towards guests, because we’re also their hosts in a way, they’re entering our space. You don’t have to like them, you don’t even have to tolerate them, but don’t be rude. SFTH wants to go bigger, which means they need to build connections. Inviting guests is one of the ways to do so. Respect their decisions and their agency.
In short, be nice, be kind, be welcoming. I don’t think that’s too much to ask.
