Also loved that it actually is Woke Odyssey. Not in a "we cast black and trans actors" way but in a "this is a movie about man's hubris, the disregard for and destruction of social contracts, the disdain with which we treat the living and the dead, the violence we wage against each other, the way we become enraptured with 'great' instead of 'right,' and the way all of that degrades the soul of man" way

I'm gonna be honest, I fuck with a movie that's all about the collapse of a society that perpetuates certain morals and laws that itself is not willing to uphold when it comes to interacting with the rest of the world.

The Greeks used the excuse of a woman and the war of gods to wage war with an economic competitor, then showed up on their enemy's shores and broke their own laws of hospitality to win the war and ransacked the city and its people. The story of those actions traveled the world, making everyone afraid of the "people from the sea," even the Greeks who WERE the people from the sea.

The suitors cried about the laws not being upheld for them but were unwilling to uphold them themselves. The same society was terrified of this invisible enemy that would invade because of their lack of morals, unaware that THEY are the ones who broke the laws first. They are their own boogeyman. The fear of foreignors was never about the actions of foreignors but their own actions.

The gods haunt the narrative as an ideal. If they were confirmed real, then this movie becomes a warning against breaking away from "the correct religion." Instead, it is a warning of how mutual care and respect for your fellow man, whether gods exist or not, is the backbone of society, and without it, morality becomes something to twist and fear monger.

The gods couldn't exist in this adaptation, so a lot of the plot points involving the gods had to be changed or left out. "Nobody" only matters if Odysseus doxxes himself for poseidon to punish. (The crew members insisting that they definitely heard the cyclops say posiedon and jumping to the conclusion that he was poseidon's son and they were cursed was a great change in my opinion.) The wind bag can only exist if the gods exist. Athena can only guide Telemechus and Odysseus if the gods exist. ("Athena" potentially only being Odysseus's guilt for the preistess he let die who only shows up in times where his actions in Troy are thematically important was *chef's kiss*.) The Trojan War is only a war sanctioned by the gods if the gods exist. Odysseus being stuck with Calypso for so long needs another reason (the lotus) if it's not by the will of the gods. What would Circe and Calypso be like if they weren't eternal goddesses? Did the crew go to Hades, or did they just perform a spell that raised the dead?

Magic and Monsters can still exist without the gods, and everything else can be explained by superstition, nature, and bad luck. The ideal of the gods haunt the narrative so wonderfully.

I'm not a fan of Nolan's directorial aesthetic, but for the themes he wanted to explore, I think this was a fantastic retelling of the original. Accuracy isn't and shouldn't always be the goal. Sometimes, taking an existing story and making something new in order to speak to a different aspect of humanity is all we can really hope for.

This doesn't mean people HAVE to like it. There are plenty of "good" movies that I do not enjoy watching. However, acting like it's an objective thing to say that this was a failure of an adaptation is very annoying. It's a subjective opinion of art.

Thoughts after a midnight screening of The Odyssey

The Nobody scene — definitely translatable into English, but the original point was to show ego and the consequences thereof. Shooting an arrow into the eye of a creature you just learnt knows the concept of malice, and spites you with a dead solider (helmet) because of this is ego. There is no benefit of shooting Cyclops, but Odysseus does any way because he values himself and the pride of his men above this creature. They same reasoning of deceiving the Cyclops in the poem.

Additionally, the cyclops did not speak with its face to the camera, and having to edit the face of the puppet to create a realistic conversation is additional and not necessary.

Scylla and Charybdis, did not like the human teeth, but a great scene, Nolan is depicting the perils of the Gods as legitimate seafaring perils, also the mountains eat you. That’s life.

“Collapse of the Bronze Age” ok weird but flows better than I feared. All of Damon’s exposition is clunky, it contextualises it for the audience, a lot of people don’t know what the Bronze Age is and if this is the only time you hear of it it is a decent correlation to know of.

Zendaya as Athena/disciple — I loved this very much, a few thought is will simmer on

1. It feels like Zendaya is performing the typical ‘woman on screen to show what the man is feeling, bc he isn’t saying/showing it’ which is annoying, but I can get over it bc understanding through religion imagery is fair enough

2. The only god being physically depicted could be rationalised as Odysseus is giving personhood to his shame and guilt about not getting back to his wife (Athena pin), sacking and destroying a temple (Athena), and betraying Zeus’ Law (Trojan horse) which is an odd way to depower the gods - especially with their very powerful kids running around - so they are (and could be) there

No jar of wind — all the perils Odysseus facing in the movie are direct consequences of actions, or to present a concern —are your men good(pigs?), who are you willing to give up(Scylla and Charybdis), what are you willing to know (hades, sirens). A jar of wind is a thing and doesn’t seem like an event, additionally, all fantastical and mythological elements are larger than life - something hand holdable takes out of the grandeur the film is getting at (you can’t control the gods/their power)

“Zeus’ Law” ya super annoying how it’s hammered into the audience a lot, but I know some Greek myths, and many people do not, I can get over it and if to make the climax of the movie land with the audience who have not heard about it - it is the most important cultural law you need for the film.

“Zeus’ Law” and Troy. Very fun to have a military strategy (Athena’s thing) to betray the law of your land (“my father says we have to treat every stranger….) and while realizing you betrayed the god your wife gave you as a gift, realizing that you betrayed your culture, and this betrayal travels home faster than you do — the sea people cause villagers to flee, causing the “fall of this age of bronze”.

Odysseus leaving Ithica (dif from the poem I believe) ya man he fucked up and killed his culture, Zeus law isn’t being followed and it’s his fault, he doesn’t want to deal with that, he’s out.

Additionally thoughts

As a movie - great. It is fun and engaging, didn’t see it in IMAX and while the cropping of close up/conversations I noticed, who I wine t with did not

Women in the film - loved Hathaway, calypso was weird and Circe was great, I think anyway you depict these two will have haters, I’m choosing to like them bc why not

Hollands acting was better than I heard, I like him more in this than Spider-Man

Elliot page and Robert Patterson - fantastic dynamic, learning who young Robert was before young Elliot, every instance where we learn more about each, loved it a lot.

Odysseus continual dismissal of the physical dead bodies - in cyclops cave, and in temple with Telemachus(?), he ‘honours’ them in getting out alive, and burning olive branches when prompted, but values live people much more than dead ones, which makes his acceptance to put his mean in danger if it means saving more men interesting, also a turning point in Hades, shit has to change, but he decides early, that he will change that after he gets home

My sister did not realize Helen had a twin sister. Was under the impression that Agamemnons wife killed him and then married his brother. This was explained in detail but she was caught up in trying to figure out whose son they were talking about and missed it

Last thought

Why the fuck did not only tell me three (3) dogs died? What the fuck. Five if you count the ones thrown off the cliff, but three who we actually met and referred to individually.

Also that puppy was a different breed to scraggly old Argos(?) why was the puppy a white and brown beagle and the old guy was a scraggly mutt? Odd choice

spent forty-five minutes today helping an 87yo woman who does not own a computer or a cell phone try to set up an email account so that she could then set up a second account in order to access benefits. went with protonmail, because they don't require 2fa, but it turns out that while you can still make a protonmail account without authentication you can no longer use it to create OTHER accounts without it, and the benefits page she needed to get to required both an email and a cell phone to create an account anyway. asked if she wanted to try going in person to see if someone there could help her, and she said that she had, and they'd directed her to the website. she tried signing up with her landline, but of course that didn't work because you can't do SMS authentication that way. finally ended up writing up detailed instructions for how to log in and authenticate her account so she can drive to her severely disabled daughter's house forty minutes away because that's the only person she knows and trusts who has both a cell phone and a computer.

anyway i fucking hate mandatory 2fa and i think the people responsible for it should have to spend a year navigating their lives with no cell phone and no internet access beyond the public library pcs. fuck.
