One of the most dangerous things in the world is not being able to say no to people because you don't want to upset them or dissapoint them. This will completely ruin your life in every way possible, at work, in your private life, your sex life and your friendships. It's a way of removing your own consent in your own decisions and go against your wishes, it is always a crime against yourself. Let yourself have a say. Upsetting people is better than traumatizing yourself.

i think about the great grandfather who had a mental breakdown in his 30s, was put in an asylum and the wife never released him and married a new man, so he ended up spending the rest of his life there. Always wondered if I could look up his name just to find more info...

coz like idk, its been this cautionary tale my dad kept telling me, how he had a 'mental breakdown' in his 30s, how his father had one, his great grandfather, etc. and that I had to be careful like it was some generational curse. I always just thought it was my dad being hopped up on morphine because he was literally dying of cancer and was trying to quickly to impart some kind of wisdom. Too bad he never told me how he got out of it, if he ever did.

it's quite frankly unfair and insane that my expectations and anxieties for how my adult friends will respond to me is foundationally built upon the experience of how my middle school friends responded to me. can they not just be filed into two separate categories.

I absolutely blame Facebook for this shift. Words cannot describe how freaking WEIRD it was in the mid-00s when there was suddenly this popular website where you were required to use your real, brickspace name and encouraged to post photos of yourself. Every single bit of Standard Internet Safety prior to then said that you should never ever ever do either of those.

#like hell even back then you only needed a university or college email to get a facebook account #the only reason i got it was because i was doing a student work exchange and they were doing their planning by facebook #so at the time i saw it as 'the site for university people to connect'#also a bit later tumblr was much more popular than twitter at the time #because it was going from blog posts to easily sharing those posts #but the tides turned for twitter when fucking celebrities and more 'important' people started using it #suddenly everyone followed #i have the memory of being in the animation lab and someone going 'wooooah this person is on twitter!'#like 'holy shit this person is using the same platform as me i can just talk to them'#sigh i miss 2000s internet so much

i grew up being thrown in all kinds of labels and every one of them gave others permission to treat me like shit. I hate being put in a box. I hate labels being put on me.

Its great you find strength behind an identity, doesn't mean someone has nefarious reasons when they don't want to participate. Some people simply want their lives to be private for their own well being.
