“You’re back!”

He’d been waiting for them, his hands finding Berenger’s face as if to memorize it—to reassure himself that this was real.

“You’re still here.” Amazement colors his voice and lights up his eyes in equal measure.

“And you,” he prods Berenger’s chest, “are out of excuses. The prince has won. You’ve won. And if you want to turn me down again, you’ll have to mean it.”

“You honestly think I could?”

“You’ve always been dreadfully immune,” Ancel says lightly, pressing his lips to Berenger’s bright grin. His heart jumps at Berenger’s words when he pulls back.

“I haven’t.”

Just my little rambling of how a reunion might have gone if Berenger had succeeded in pushing Ancel away when he felt that their connection would put him in danger 🥹

I keep thinking about Damen not realising Laurent's trauma until the very end because in his mind family is a safe space. Family can't harm you. Family is trust and companionship, family has your back and you have theirs.

Despite what Damen himself went through with his brother, until the very end he still can't contemplate damaging the people closest to you.

And the irony or the beauty is that this fierce, protective belief makes him the safest partner for Laurent. Damen is like Auguste, he's always going to take care of Laurent, protecting and supporting him.

That's why Laurent doesn't wear tight clothes any longer by the end and even more in the short story, he's free and loved and safe.

Laurent saying “He would’ve beat you” about Auguste after fighting Damen. Laurent saying “he would’ve won” because Auguste is his big brother and he’s someone he believes in. He’s someone who beats the monster and Laurent believes that even then even there even in that moment where Auguste is gone and Damen is the one who took him away. And Damen is also the person who most closely resembles everything Laurent had loved in Auguste. Damen is good and wonderful and Damen killed Auguste. Auguste didn’t beat the monster except that monster is Damen and he’s also just a man who won a fight.

That part is so hard and violent as the lines Laurent drew between the Damen he knew and the Damen who killed his brother falls apart.

Another detail in "Prince's Gambit" I am thinking about today is the fact that in the battle near Ravenel Damen was really, REALLY almost killed by Lord Touars, who was aiming for his neck - but missed, scratching the golden collar.

So the collar, a sign of Damen's enslavement, of horrible cruelty that was done to him, actually saved his life.

I think it's beautifully metaphoric, a lot to think about. This book never stopes amazing me.

best fucking shit in all captive prince trilogy me thinks is when damen saves laurent in a court with his very own critical thinking skills while laurent saves damen from his brother with his own strenght and fighting style, because there is no more perfect way of saying "thank you for saving me before, now let me save you too" than doing so in the other's language
