I gotta be honest I dont think Zosia was being smug or sinister here. To me this reads as relief. She missed Carol. She really did and she’s glad that she can come back and see her again.

(Yes I agree it was bad to isolate her but I’m talking from Zosia’s POV here) they didn’t isolate her cause they hated her and didn’t wanna see her again they isolated her out of a misguided love for her. In their minds they’re like “Well she isn’t listening to us when we tell her to stop asking us about how to reverse this so we need to put her in time out so she understands” and then when she called them back they werent like “Mwa Hahahha our evil plan to isolate her until she cracks worked” I think they’re like “Thank god she understands. Thank god we get to see her again.” Look at how Zosia puts her arm around Carol and then closes her eyes for a second leans into it.

Look at how Zosia rubs Carol’s shoulder comforting her. I think she’s just as happy as Carol to see her again. I genuinely think she did miss her. While I think isolating her the way they did was cruel I don’t think they had ill intent. I think they did it as a misguided way of trying to protect her. And they’re so relieved that she finally learned her lesson and they can see her again.
