instead of jars to bury your spells in, my i suggest the idea of peat pots planters?
not only are they biodegradable, they are useful for many different things. you can grow herbs and starter plants or use them to bury a home protection without the fear of broken glass rising to the surface, or your jar staying in the ground for a 100 years. they also come in many different sizes as well. from large to very tiny
and you can even make your own from left over toilet paper rolls for a byproduct option that lessens garbage going into landfills.
there are plenty of cheaper, earth friendlier options available to us, as witches, at our disposal. it is up to us as a whole to start making better earth friendly choices, to modernize the practice. we are not from the middle ages and tradition has nothing to do with glass jars - we have the knowledge in modern days to realize how harmful the practice of burying jars actually is, we have resources to change that as well.
I don't know if anyone's made a post about this before but to all of you beginner witches or to those of you without the money to buy them or the witches who are in the broom closet, I'd just like to say, you don't need a bunch of glass bottles to hold your herbs or make spells in!! Lots of things work! I sometimes use empty pill bottles because I tend to get headaches so it would make sense for me to have a bottle of Tylenol! Though be careful if you do that so someone doesn't open it by mistake.

Salt Strings
I’m super here for magic and science meeting together in the best ways. I got this idea from a children’s science experiments book. Add a little bit of magic into the mix, and you’ve got a fantastic ward!
What you Need
Salt (epsom or sea salt seems to work best)
Gem water
String (I used jute twine)
Two cups
Something to heat water with
That’s it. It’s a super easy and super powerful ward, but it does take some time.
So what you need to do is create a super saturated salt solution. You’ll want to make a gem water that aligns with your intent. I used obsidian and black tourmaline to make my gem water (and I may have tossed a rose quartz in there too because I used that for everything).
Once your gem water is ready, you’ll want to heat it up, either in the microwave in a microwave safe bowl or on the stove. In order to make a super saturated solution, you need A LOT of salt. Keep dissolving the salt in the water until it won’t dissolve anymore. (This is why the heat is necessary. Salt dissolves quicker.) Keep pouring and dissolving salt until salt grains remain even with heat and stirring. I also recommend stirring clockwise in order to give it a little extra oomph.
When you have your solution, pour it into two separate glasses or cups. Get a length of string and place each end in the cups of salt water. Set the cups with the string between them somewhere it won’t be disturbed. (I set mine on the windowsill because easy access and hey, charged with sunlight and moonlight!)
It will take a few days, but slowly the salt solution will start to creep over the edge and along the string. When the water is gone/the string has grown salt crystals along it, take it out and place it somewhere in your room/house. I’d recommend by a door or window so that it keeps evil from entering.
You can also use this method with a paperclip, and grow salt crystals on a paperclip or pencil or any mundane item. You just need the solution and something to hang in the water. (You’d only need one cup for that!)
Be careful if you choose to add any sort of color or herbs to the solution. It is chemistry, so I’d mostly just recommend using salt and water. Adding other things to the water may impact the growth of the salt crystals.
I’ve also found that the leftover salt is an excellent cleansing agent. Add some to your bath/shower or even food (if you’re using some sort of sea salt/table salt/kosher salt). I rubbed a little bit on my third eye when I was having some psychic problems, and it definitely cleansed it out and protected it. I highly recommend using any leftover salt not on the string as a cleansing agent in any of your spells. It seems to be pretty a pretty potent protective agent. Salt is already potent in warding, and coupled with gem water it’s a pretty powerful ward.
Hope this helps! If you use this, let me know how it goes for you!

Communicating with house spirits
Suppose there is a spirit in your home that has been causing trouble, and you need to deal with it directly. This is easily done. You will just need a little prep work ahead of time.
First gather a few offerings. Any alcohol, fresh water, any food (especially unprocessed food), incense, candles, or even a cool object or trinket will do.
Just in case things go wrong, gather some basic banishing tools. I use flying devil oil and salt.
If it makes you feel better, wear protective amulets.
If you require it, also bring your divination tools to communicate with the spirit.
When you feel fully prepared to contact this spirit, go to where the activity is highest. This could be where you sense its presence the most, or where the most activity occurs.
Prepare a call. I suggest, “Spirit who lives in my home and has done [specific action], I wish to speak with you. Come to me now.”
If the spirit appears you will likely gain an image of it in your imagination. This could be its actual appearance or it could be something else, like an animal or abstract shape. Simply tell it what you need to tell it.
“You may live here, but you need to stop doing [undesired action].”
“You may not live here any longer. I am inviting you to leave now.”
“In exchange for your improved behavior I would like to give you this toy box, with things you can play with any time.”
“In exchange for these changes, I would like to offer you to partake in my weekly offerings.”
Etc.
This is not a full article on spirit communication [check out this one for some more details]. So I am not going to go over how to detect the spirit’s responses. If you are going to allow the spirit to continue living in your home, ask it for a name to call it by. This way you can more easily communicate in the future.
If the spirit is noncompliant or becomes aggressive, a banishing may be in order.
This is a sigil to aid in bringing up scores regarding mathematics (do not forget to study, do not take this as a reason to not work towards your goal). It aids in focus towards math.
Pretty easy magic to get whatever you want (AKA, the Polar Spell)
This is called the Polar spell because it has two polaric sides: a banishing and a summoning.
This can be performed by someone from any path or faith.
You will simply need a quiet space and a point of focus. Try to use a unique point of focus that you only use with this spell.
For this spell, you will banish something you don’t want, then summon it’s opposite. Examples are poverty/wealth, loneliness/friendship, or anxiety/peace.
This point of focus can be anything. It could be nothing at all if you are good at focusing your mind. If you are a witch, you may like to use a candle flame, the witch’s compass, or some dried herbs. If you are religious, an icon of your god or religious leader could certainly do the trick. If you are New Age, try crystals. Choose an object that acts as a portal to the Universe, Heaven, or the Otherworld. When you focus on this object, your voice and thoughts are infused by the powers of that realm, and anything you desire can become reality.
If your path calls for it, cleanse your point of focus however you please. If you like, use my cleansing ritual.
Hold your point of focus and see that (imagine) it is covered with an icky, grimy energy. Take a deep breath and imagine your breath is the color of purification. Exhale on your focus object and see that the grimy energy is becoming totally cleared away, being purified by your breath and returning to a state of neutrality. Either exhale once or three times. If for some reason you cannot stop seeing the icky grimy energy on your object, let it rest covered in salt for three days.
While looking at your focus object, relax and imagine that you are becoming very connected with your realm. Let yourself be infused with the power of that place. It is shining down on you always, and all you need to do is accept it. In this moment of focus, you can accept it. Think or say, “I accept my power to change the Universe.” It is alright if you feel strange, tingly, or even a little creepy. It’s an intense moment. Enjoy it.
Think about what you would like to banish. Focus intently on it. Imagine it in whatever form seems most fitting. Then imagine that something happens to that energy which sends it away. Some examples:
The energies you wish to banish are burned up in flames, and the ashes are blown far away.
The energies are trapped in bubbles, and the bubbles carry them far away.
The energies are encased in lead or cement and sink to the bottom of the ocean.
The energies are an illusion which shatters like glass.
As you imagine the energies being destroyed or carried away, say or think, “I banish you, [energies]. You are exiled from my life.” Repeat this once or however many times seems fitting.
If for any reason, you simply cannot imagine these energies being removed, or they seem to be invulnerable to damage, you are trying to banish something too big or too deeply rooted. Start smaller.
Once these energies have been properly banished, it is time to call in their opposites to fill that blank space. Just as you did before, vividly imagine the opposing, benevolent energies appearing in your life.
Imagine that you are holding a seed, and from the seed sprouts the energies you desire.
Imagine that a strong wind or rain brings these energies and places them at your feet.
Imagine that before you is an ancient treasure chest, which opens to reveal what you desire.
Imagine that a creature of good omens carries these energies in its mouth and drops them in to your life.
Once the energies have “arrived,” imagine that they grow bigger and bigger until it fills your life.
If you cannot grow the energies, you may lack the power to do so, or something could be blocking them. Try summoning something else that is benevolent and healthy. In addition, try making your visualizations more simple and with less detail.
Once you have imagined this energy filling your entire life, do a gesture of sealing. An example could be saying a word or phrase like “so mote it be” or “it is done.” Or you could blink, clap your hands, stomp your feet, or do sign language.
Send thanks to your higher powers, leave an offering to the spirits, or do anything else to show your gratefulness (if desired). Cover your focus object with a cloth or within a container. Put it away. Go ground by eating some food, doing a little physical activity, and talking to friends.
Repeat this quick spell once a day until you see the forces in your life changing. For a small banishment/summoning, expect to see results within a week. For a much larger scale, the timeline will naturally grow longer.
If this spell does not work for you within a week, send me a message and we will troubleshoot.

Thicket's Divination Get-Started Guide
Totally just jump right in there and start dabbling with shit, provided that you don’t summon any spirits. There are methods of divination that are performed by summoning, but don’t you summon. Just stick with some nifty tools for now.
Briefly, grab a pen and paper and ask yourself the following questions:
How does divination work?
Is it possible to divine without tools?
Where does this information come from?
I won’t give you my thoughts on this, because the point is to just question yourself and get the ball rolling. It is totally alright if you don’t have your own concrete answers. Divination worked for me when I didn’t have any answers, and it works for me now that I feel I have answers.
In general, when you divine you are going to ask either specific questions, or you will ask for a general reading and let the tools show you what they will.
For any tool (tarot, runes, scrying, etc) learning how to phrase your questions is vital.
It takes special skill to see very far in to the future, or very far in to the past. As a beginner, focus your questions within a range of a couple of months. Once you get a feel for things, try reading a decade in to the future and see the differences in your results.
Divination is about INTERPRETATION. Therefore, tools will rarely give you direct answers. If you ask questions that may only be answered directly, you are going to have a bad time. Examples are proper nouns, dates, and numbers. “What is the name of my soul mate” is not going to work with tarot cards.
Avoid yes and no questions. Again, it is your job to interpret. “Will I get the job” is not a question that leaves the answer open to interpretation.
Avoid “big” questions for now. “What is the purpose of my life” is a pretty epic question. Try, “what can I accomplish today” or “what will my week look like.”
Remember to write down your questions! Sometimes, the exact phrasing of a question can matter. It sucks to lay down 20 cards then realize you forgot the exact nature of your question.
Example questions to try out for any system of divination:
What is the personality of my soul mate?
What was my last past life like?
What message does (your higher power) want to send to me right now?
What is the biggest obstacle in my life right now? How can I overcome that obstacle?
What do I really need to know right now?
What is coming up in my life that I need to know about?
What is my biggest personality flaw?
What is my best personality trait?
What am I ready to let go of?
What do other people immediately notice about me?
What is my biggest fear?
What should I meditate on?
Getting started with your tools
When you acquire a deck of cards, a set of runes, throwing sticks, the I-Ching, or a nice book for bibliomancy, start small. If you are in to magic you may want to bless and cleanse your tools. I do not find this to be necessary but if you do, here is a very brief ritual for you:
Take your tool, whatever it may be. Place it on a clean surface. Hold your hand in a triangle shape (thumbs connected, pointer fingers touching). Look through the triangle at your tool. Say these words:
“By Fire, the burning spirit, be cleansed [name of tool].
By Air, the wicked mind, be cleansed [name of tool].
by Water, the rushing blood, be cleansed [name of tool].
by Earth, the graceful body, be cleansed [name of tool].
Sealed by Spirit, you are cleansed.”
Make a gesture of sealing over the tool (I will leave it up to you to make a gesture of your own). It is now cleansed and prepared for use.
Hopefully your tool will have come with a guidebook. If not, simply search for one online. Also have your notebook handy.
Begin by formulating a simple, fairly direct question. “How is my day going to be?” is perfect. Remember to write your question down. Draw a single card, cast a single rune, look for a single image in your cup of coffee. Write down what your results were, and use your guidebook or the internet to look up interpretations to help you out. Right now it’s too early to be looking for specifics. Try for generalities!
If the card, rune, image, etc., is generally good or positive, take this as a good omen. If it is generally negative, take it as a bad omen. If it is mixed or neutral, look for phrases in your guidebook or research that pop out to you. Suppose you ask, “how is my day going to be?” and you draw an oracle card related to glamouring. This is neither good nor bad on it’s own, but perhaps you can interpret that it is necessary to “put on a face” that day.
Write down your interpretations. It is okay if you have multiple or even conflicting interpretations. At the end of the day, return to your notebook and see which interpretation fit your day most closely. Ask yourself, “how did I come to this most correct interpretation?” Perhaps for one interpretation you used intuition, for another you used phrases from the guidebook, and for the third you made a guess. Keep track of how you come to your most correct answers.
Practice often! Acquire as many divination tools as you like and try them all.
Try reading for others. Offer readings on Tumblr or provide them to your friends. When reading for others, you will find that some people want to tell you everything upfront. Try to read with as little information as possible. If you come up with multiple interpretations for others, share all of them and ask your querent to tell you which one fits best. Again, ask yourself, “how did I come to this most correct interpretation?”
If you need someone to practice on, shoot me a message and I will be very glad to sit for you :) I give LOTS of feedback.
Becoming more advanced; reaching that next step
My best advice for anyone who wants to go past dabbling and get a little more serious:
Take notes on your readings.
Research your system of divination. Read books about it.
Experiment with your system of divination. Challenge yourself to try something totally new with it.
Practice! Practice practice practice.
Try reading for others. It is definitely different than reading for yourself.
My recommended “get started right now” divination tools:
Any book for bibliomancy
A cup of tea or coffee, with milk, for scrying (drip the milk in to your beverage and observe what images appear)
A deck of playing cards
Three pennies for the I-Ching (google I-Ching to find out how to use this very cool system of divination)
