So about a month ago, I created the Smoshblr Spotify Playlist! It is a public playlist, so anyone can look at the playlist, but it’s also a collaborative playlist, meaning anyone with a Spotify account is free to add music to it.
Thanks to you guys, there’s already a lot of great music on there! Listening to all the songs also serves as some great writing inspo, which got me thinking… why not make an ongoing community challenge out of it?! I was always a fan of those fic-writing challenges back in the day that included writing 100 fics for 100 prompts, and I wanted to do something similar to that, but for all sorts of fan creations. So now introducing:

All US public schools should receive the same funding based on the amount of enrolled students
All property taxes that would initially go to the local school district should be nationally divided between all US public schools.
If previously wealthy school districts funding needs aren’t being met, the education budget should be nationally increased, to provide the same public school education for all children in attendance.
Low test scores should never decrease funding.
Schools should not receive funding based on the success of their students.
Schools with high rates of failure should receive special attention to bring them back up to par with the rest of the public education system.
All students should have safe and reliable transportation to their public school if they cannot make the walk to school due to disability or distance.
All students should receive a free lunch and breakfast if they want it while at school. These meals should meet the nutritional needs of the students.
A public school should never rent out equipment, musical instruments, supplies, etc.
Students should never pay for things the school already owns.
If a public school demands its students wear uniforms then the school should buy the uniforms for their students.
If a public school demands certain supplies the public school should provide said supplies to all students.
All public school students should have healthcare; if they don’t already have it then the moment they are enrolled in school they should be given it for free by the state. Poor attendance from students should never put them in juvi, or other detention centers for youths.
Poor attendance from students should never decrease funding of a school.
All students with poor attendance should have special academic and medical attention paid to them to solve the problem of why they cannot or will not show up to school.
All public schools should have on staff at least one professional nurse practitioner and one professional therapist, both specializing in the ages of students at the school.
All public schools should have several caseworkers to help parents navigate the bureaucratic paperwork hell.
All schools should have their staff as diverse as their student body; schools with mostly black students should never have 100% white teachers.
Y'all ever realize just how fucking low the bar is and how far under it we’ve dug?
One thing to add. All private and charter schools should be outlawed and shut down.
The only thing I’m a little concerned about here is that there are cases where private schools are completely necessary.
Nine out of ten cases I’d agree because a lot of times they actively compete against public schools for funding, but I can’t help but to think of how much backlash there’s been when Jews—who have been failed by their local education system—form Jewish schools. Just this year there’s been news stories about gentiles fighting against the establishment of Jewish schools.
The public school system is made with Christian needs in mind, and county policies are often designed in such a way that isn’t just unhelpful for Jewish families, but actively antagonistic.
I wasn’t raised observant, but for my Jewish friends who were raised observant, it was a nightmare. Between things being consistently scheduled on Shabbat—something that would NEVER happen on Sundays!—important religious holidays being exam days, the difficulty of making everything up, teachers being actively hostile over scheduling issues like these, the administration refusing to act about antisemitism, the horrible ways schools engage with Jewish suffering especially the holocaust…
And even though I wasn’t raised observant, I still personally dealt with nasty antisemitism and school administration refusing to do anything about it, even when it came from teachers.
I say this knowing that I will never, ever, in my life be able to afford to send my kids to a Jewish school. But Jewish schools definitely fall under private schools, and they’re absolutely necessary and will be until antisemitism stops being a global force.
I think similarly there’s a justifiable reason for the existence of schools for the blind, deaf, etc given how pervasive ableism is

Men can’t write horror because they’re too focused on all the gross ways they can dehumanize women.
