today was the second to last day of figure drawing class. the friend i've made in class nearly threw her whole sketchbook away after filling it! she's a great artist, but is so hard on herself... i joked that maybe it'll be worth millions one day when she Makes It as an artist, and asked her to name her price, in response she said i could just have it for free. i did try very hard to get her to keep it (even the prof mentioned its good to have evidence of your own improvement over time), but she made it clear that if i handed it back, it was going straight in the trash... maybe i can learn something from studying her work. her main thing is extremely finely rendered pencil portraits that she spends countless hours on.
I used to be very much like her. I’m glad you kept it for her. I have so many of my old sketchbooks that I look through every now and then for inspiration or sometimes to laugh at how bad some works are. Every single one I remember drawing and many I viewed as horrible at the time of creation. I’m honestly surprised sometimes how good or interesting some of the sketches are. Each one is a memory and it’s like a diary only I can read. Maybe one day in the future reach out again to her and give it back or at least go through it with her. It’ll be a fun time.
In the meantime definitely learn from her work, it’s such a luxury to have another artist’s sketchbook. I’ve been fortunate to view a few in my life and it’s always very interesting to see how others sketch. Happy drawing ✍🏼
There was a time when the internet was confined to a stationary desktop in the corner of the living room in our childhood homes. Every time I turned it on, the machine would groan and whir to life, the sound sometimes deafening as I waited for it to calm down so I could click on Internet Explorer and play Club Penguin, go on Mathletics for homework, or watch a few videos on a prehistoric version of Youtube. And then I would press shut down, go up to my room, and leave the online world behind. My room was my favorite space in the whole world—it still is—and as soon as I shut the door behind me, everything within the four walls became mine and wholly mine. From the bowing bookshelves against the walls in a state of near collapse due to the number of books they were holding, to my paintings scattered all around the room, to my piano, to the loose leaf papers holding scrawls of a story I was writing—everything belonged to me and was a product of my own imagination. Owning something in its entirety like that can only be born of a complete vacuum of outside noise, and when was the last time any of us truly felt that way?

New Ultra-Black Coating Could Enable the Search for Life on Exoplanets
A recently developed ultra-black coating not only efficiently absorbs light, but is also extremely thin and durable, enabling its potential use on starshades that could someday support the imaging of exoplanets and potentially facilitate the detection of life beyond our solar system. from NASA https://ift.tt/xQ2RHKW

Anti-intellectualism is so poisonous and the fact that people think their opinions are just as valid as real academic studies is toxic. There's no amount of arguing you can do to help sometimes, which also sucks.
