when i look up a knitting term, the last thing I want is an ai overview. I want a 60+ year old woman with no understanding of lighting or helpful camera angles who still manages to give the most concise and clear explanation of how to execute purl 2tog through the backloop. ai summary fuck off, where is phyllis?
i ADORED your wha/aa crossover thoughts, especially those sick character designs! i eagerly wait more art, should u wish it of course. but what i come to u for today is the wha/aa crossover in the opposite direction. how does the wha cast fit into the wacky world of los angeles criminal law? is there any way you can envision them as lawyers and prosecutors and the like?
oh yes oh yes absolutely
Qifrey: Criminal defense attorney. Specializes in juvenile offenders. Was taken in by beldaruit (judge who retired to become a professor) as a means to spare him from the foster system after he was discovered as a victim of a crime ring. i think we can say that magic is at least equally as real in this au as it is in the ace attorney series, which is to say, a little bit, but mostly no one knows or cares. so i think in this setting the brimhats are still just actually sinister witches who stole his eye and memory wiped him for some sort of mysterious ritual.
so qifrey learns law from beldaruit and wants to take them down, and being a prosecutor would have gotten him more access, but his ass would Notttt be on that side of the criminal justice system ever. so. defense attorney it is.
Olruggio: Met qifrey at like some summer camp beldaruit sent him to to socialize him. has a bunch of weird survivalist skills because he grew up on a prepper commune in rural alaska before his family sent him to live with relatives in the city. became sort of stuck with qifrey immediately after having to 1. fish him out of the lake after he fell out of a canoe and started drowning and then 2. follow him through the woods for several days after he decides he is going to escape from camp to make sure he doesn't Die Of Exposure.
Followed qifrey into law. Doesn't really tend to try cases and mostly serves as qifrey's legal aide with a robust patent business on the side. volunteer firefighter.
Coco: she gets the old miles edgeworth special, which is to say traumatically framed for your own parents murder. qifrey defends her and then takes her in. Her case is tied to the brim hats' crime ring as well so she immediately pledges herself to his revenge quest alongside him. unfortunately can not dream of saving her mom under such circumstances so i think she just wants to be able to defend someone the way qifrey defended her and immediately full commits to learning law. immediately very good at Turning Your Thinking Around And Believing In Yourself, which we know are the two most important skills for being a defense attorney. she gets hazed by agott sending her to an active crime scene when she joins.
agott: daughter of a judge on the state supreme court. is attending Teen Lawyer School until she gets kicked out in a plagiarism scandal. goes to study law with qifrey and is determined to become a lawyer as fast as possible to someday try a case in front of her mother. absolutely hates coco for being such a quick study. initially more interested in becoming a prosecutor but qifrey convinces her to switch to defense.
richeh: Originally meets qifrey at the courthouse after being called as a witness in a case for her teacher's abuse scandal. dropped out of school after this and is technically Tutored by qifrey, but he mostly just kind of lets her hang around and teaches her general life skills like cooking and time management. after they all keep getting repeatedly involved in messy cases richeh realizes she wants to be able to protect people too she decides to study law with them.
tetia: we don't even know what's going on with tetia in canon so i cold not even begin to say. she's also here.
i think it'd be funny if she and the other girls are a member of like a fireside girls-esque extremely over the top girl scout parody organization that qifrey chaperones a local chapter of. then they could still have cute little matching outfits
“You feel the bulge in his pants” - implies that you are feeling some guy’s penis, may be sexy depending on context
“You feel the bugle in his pants” - implies that this guy has a military horn in his pants, invites confusing questions like why does he have that and how big are his pockets
Unpopular opinion but reading a lot does not automatically make you a better writer and i'm tired of pretending it does. Reading makes you a better reader. Writing makes you a better writer. They're related but they're not the same thing. You can read every book ever written and still not know how to be honest on the page. That part you have to earn separately and it costs more.
I mean, I see what you're saying, but it doesn't meaningfully change anything in what that advice is getting across. If a person is already a writer, you'd have to willfully ignore the point to understand "be a better reader and you'll be a better writer" as "you don't need to practice." It's more if a "as you read, you will come across approaches, perspectives, and techniques that will inspire you to test your craft in new and exciting ways, so fill your cup if it ever feels stale or stuck."
Writing's an act of love. If it ever gets choked out by fear (of failure, inadequacy, clichè, etc), and clarity and honesty feel out of reach, the easiest way to dig it back is not to beat yourself up over inadequate skill, but to find that love in other stuff. Reading is writing in the same way firewood is flame. The spark happens in your mind.
also because I just saw someone being like "I don't wanna read and imitate other people, I wanna write like myself!" and had feelings about it:
girl. I am holding you so gently right now. this is abject loneliness that you're subjecting yourself to. reading other people's thoughts doesn't take away from your own perspective, but what it gives you is the words to express yourself so that you will understand you. It gives you the literary vocabulary (images! symbols! metaphors! comparisons! pacing!) of your culture/s of choice, and shows you how use them to make sense of what you feel and what want to say, and then express it in a way that other people will understand you too. Literature isn't a rally where there's one voice blaring out for others to listen, it's a conversation. You're writing to be read. You and your readers will need a common language. You acquire that language by reading widely. And then not only do you get better at expressing your feelings to others, you find others who feel the same, and suddenly the world's a greater and more beautiful place where you can go, "you too?! I thought it was just me!"
I promise this is not taking one whit of your individuality away. You might be exposing yourself to all of those outside influences but the I in the centre, the mind that decides and interacts and feels, that's the voice that will always be unique. You just gotta channel it in a way that can be understood.
I know the picture frame is recurring motif through the whole series, but I've always found these two chapter covers side by side to be particularly striking. The many many layers of Qifrey versus Olruggio remaining the same through every slice of time.
given the current climate this pride especially i feel i must mention that i love my trans friends, i stand with trans people in the fight against transphobic legislation and those who would enforce it, and this blog is not a good place for you to be if you do not vibe with that
