John Flaxman Pastoral Apollo. 1825

The Pastoral Apollo, was commissioned by George O’Brien Wyndham, 3rd Earl of Egremont (1751-1837), for Petworth House.  The Pastoral Apollo statuary depicts him as the protector of shepherds.  Lord Egremont’s first payment for this piece having been made in 1813, we know that it took John Flaxman, 12 years to sculpt this marble to all the splendor we see here.

Revered an artist, both in his home country of Britain and in continental Europe, during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, John Flaxman (1755 - 1826), from that time where he worked in his father’s plaster-casting studio in London while studying Classical literature, which was to be a continual source of inspiration. John Flaxman was a prolific artist who created works of sculpture, illustrations and designs for the world-famous potter Josiah Wedgwood.  Flaxman started work as a designer for Josiah Wedgwood in 1775 and produced designs for Wedgwood’s iconic Jasperware.  Some twelve years later Flaxman travelled to Rome, originally intending to stay for two years to develop his knowledge of ancient art and gain inspiration from the large amounts of archaeological material being excavated across continental Europe. Flaxman remained in Rome for nine years and it was there that he produced his most famous works.
