i cannot believe i’m about to defend george lucas as a scriptwriter but at least the prequels had the decency to actually interrogate why anakin’s actions were evil and unconscionable and those stories contended with the horror of the actions themselves as well as their collateral damage

the sequels do none of these for kyle ron

“oh so you’re saying in fiction all evil has to be punished???” absolutely not. anakin won, remember? he went on to build an empire, like he said he was going to. but the story forces us as the audience to contend that he was evil, whatever his Tragic Backstory was.

the sequels do not do that for kyle ron.

anakin killed a room full of children and all other characters are horrified by it. kyle ron blew up a planet on which many children live, and we never, ever talk about it again. the prequels do not defend or uplift anakin, whereas the sequels do a sharp one-eighty and turn kyle ron into the hero/protagonist of a story that was never supposed to be his.

the OT introduced us a bad man and then revealed an ember of good burning deep within, and the prequels went into detail about the making of a good man into a bad one and showed us the horror of devastating mistakes and eternal, damning, un-atone-able regret that went into the making of such a person

and then the ST showed us a boy who worshiped the dark side and couldn’t shovel his heart and his family into the fires fast enough and they wonder why we don’t see him as a sweetly tragic vader 2.0

I once signed up to participate in a study on how depression affects memory, forgot I was meant to go do it, and when I emailed to apologise to the PhD student running it she basically told me that a) she was very used to this happening and b) the weird irony of her theories’ correctness making it very difficult to arrange proving them had by now gone from infuriating to hysterical

I went to the Grand Canyon when I was depressed and I literally forgot the whole thing. Like, the only reason I even know I was there is that I have photographs of myself standing in front of the Grand Canyon with dead eyes but i have absolutely no memory of it

People talk about depression like it’s just being sad all the time but straight up your brain stops working and sadness is just one of the many, many consequences of that
