Working on some news clippings today.

A man named Philip married his fiancé Grace two days before having to report to the Mexican Border Campaign in 1916. She went with him for a bit, stayed in married officer's quarters I guess.

Got pregnant, had a baby. He goes to France in 1917 as part of our entry to WWI.

Grace dies in mid 1918 from a pulmonary abscess. Philip is in Europe until at least 1919.

He never saw her again

He didn't remarry until 1945

Update: He was at Camp McClellan in June 1918, and he had a ten day furlough in Baltimore shortly before his wife died.

So, still tragic, but I'm glad they were able to see each other again before she passed.

What's the first "big news story" you remember from when you were a kid?

It's something I love to ask mixed-aged groups sometimes because I think it's really interesting to see the responses. I've gotten answers from the Olympics of [whatever year] to Watergate to more recent stuff from my niblings.

My first news thing I remember is the OJ Simpson trial. I vaguely remember watching the news with my grandparents before that, but that's the first story I remember, in part because my second grade teacher had us go play so she could watch the verdict 😂

I don't entirely buy Hunter Biden's redemption arc, though I do hope he is genuinely sober and stays that way, but it is kinda funny to see him just be up front about how fucked up he was
