Raid! the Library with Professor Sparrow | Kayoko | Episode 3 | [ATTN: Butterscotch]
Bad News: Kayoko had yet to explore the new floor. Good News: That was because she found the library.
While it honestly did take her a full day to bother going up there, her inner nerd screamed quietly (shhhhhh) at the sight of so many shelves of books and the sweet, indescribable scent of knowledge. She could spend her entire life in this place cuddled up comfy in a corner, buried in mountains of books as she occupies herself with random trivia of the world.
While she still had the rest of her life to go, she had been here since before dawn.
Why? She was on a quest for knowledge! That⊠wasnât just random trivia of the world, even though that was fun too. Kayoko had spent her entire life in Osaka and Kyoto, never once setting foot in a desert before now, and knowing next to nothing of its unique environment and ecosystem. The plant life, the wildlife, the geography, she wanted to wanted to learn all she could about this place. Only made sense as she and her classmates were stuck living here for an indefinite amount of time. Best to know your battlefield, right?
So thatâs where she was. Curled up with a good book⊠of dozen. Only the sound of slow, flipping pages filled the void of serene silence.
That is until someone walked in.
Kayoko glanced up from her book and blinked. Immediately, pensive study face brightened into an excited grin as she waves.
âButter-kun!â
Shhhhhhhh! This is a library! Keep your voice down!
A nightâs rest made Butterscotch feel like a whole new person. Well, that, and the bleached hair. That was certainly something he could never get used to, even after all the times he had dyed his hair. It was so bright! And noticeable! And totally didnât match the yellow of his attire at all. He was doomed to be a tacky mess until he used the Strawberry hair dye later that day. Until then, there was time to pass and things to do.
As he stepped into the library he couldnât help brushing his hand through his blond mass of waves and curls. He hadnât noticed he wasnât the only one in the area, too absorbed in thoughts about himself. A shout in his direction caused him to flinch and turn his head towards Kayoko.
âButter-kun...?â
Butterscotch brought his hand down from his hair to place under his chin, contemplating the name.
âDid you mean... Butterfingers? Because unfortunately heâs not here with me. Only Taffy. And I donât know any Buttercreams, Butterballs, or Buttercrunchs. I do know a Crunch! I wonder how heâs doing. Ah, memories.â
He took another step closer to his classmate and looked down at the book she was reading, then let his eyes wander to the other books she had near her person.
âDoing some light reading? How rude of me for interrupting! The library is supposed to be a sanctuary of silence and here I am rambling away! Please, donât let me disturb you.â
Wasnât she the one who called out to you? Chill, my dude.
Butterscotchâs room is locked! And unless you manage to convince him or if youâre a select few who heâd allow in itâs going to stay locked. Heâll be around the Fennec area but getting any access from him will be tricky.
OSC Tuning | Butterscotch + Matsu | CH1 / Normal Days
As Butterscotch grabbed Matsuâs arm, they were forced to stop trying to crawl or just let Taffy fall to the ground. They swallowed, sitting on their knees and trying to no avail to pull their arm away as Taffy made her way up onto their shoulder.Â
â⊠No! I donât want to bond with you! Leave me the fuck alone!â They started pulling away, harder, while Butterscotch worked on opening the box. And it revealedâŠ
A wolfâs head.
No, not a literal wolf head. A wolf head to⊠put over your own head. Heard of fursuits? Well, itâs similar, from the looks of it. Itâs a beautifully crafted replica of the head of a wolf, designed to be worn as part of a costume, probably. Grey fur, sharp teeth and a surprisingly soft tongue, this wolf head has it all! Folded up next to it was a piece of paper.
⊠What?
Matsu looked mortified, their eyes darting between the box and Butterscotch, but instead of fighting, they were just sitting there, gasping for breath. If they caught up with their breathing, maybe they could get away the second he let go of them? Â
Butterscotch was greeted by a pair of glossy. inhuman eyes and a set of pearly white fangs. That was enough to momentarily drain the warmth from his veins. Several seconds later he realized what he was looking at and forced himself to breath again, letting out what sounded like a soft gasp.
âAhhhhâŠ!â
Before he let himself examine the head further he noticed the note tucked in the corner of the box and pulled it out. Slowly his hand slipped away from Matsuâs arm so that he could unfold the paper with ease to silently read the note inside of it. The seconds that lingered afterwards were few and silent, and when the Herpetologist broke the silence it was with a soft whisper.
â... SweetTart.â
Butterscotch tilted his head towards Matsu, not even knowing if they had used the time when he had been reading the note to escape, but seeing as they were still by his side he extended his hand out to them, stopping it right as he was about to touch their shoulder. Taffy began crawling off of Matsuâs arm and onto Butterscotchâs hand.
âIâm afraid I donât feel like fulfilling your request. Why would I want to get rid of something so interesting? Let alone a gift! From you! I think Iâll cherish this for awhile. Itâs a delight to know that something reminded you of me!â
He pulled his hand back as Taffy crawled up his arm and turned his head back towards the wolf head so he could start pulling it out of the box.
âThank you~! Anddd⊠mmmm, sorry for chasing you down. Youâre free to go and do whatever you were up to before; donât let me keep you.â
OSC Tuning | Butterscotch + Matsu | CH1 / Normal Days
An arm wrapped around them haphazardly and Matsu slammed into Butterscotch. At least he was able to break their fall, but it was still a much less than pleasant experienceâŠ. Actually, it hurt pretty badly. As the group toppled over, a whimper of pain escaped the reedmakerâs small body.Â
Without realizing what they were doing totally, they pressed their hand to their side, trying to catch their breath. The pain wasnât that bad, it wasnât. They were fine, nothing bad had happened, it justâŠ
Wait, shit. That lizard was on their chest, and the smug asshole was underneath them. Matsuâs first instinct was to roll off, but that would throw the lizard in the floor. They groaned, gasping for breath still, and let go of their side to rest their hand lightly on Taffy to keep her from falling (not that they cared, it was just instinct).Â
They had to⊠theyâŠ. They couldnât get up yet, but they started trying to slide off of Butterscotch to hopefully start to crawl away, though it was extremely awkward to try and do with one hand on Taffy and a pretty significant difficulty in catching their breath. They didnât even realize that they were pretty much trying to steal her, as it appeared.
âI-I, Iâm not⊠I donât wanna!â Oh god when he saw what was in there, if they were with him, that would be so embarrassing. Shit. SHIT!Â
Even after all of that Matsu wasnât going to cooperate. What did a guy have to do to get things done around here?! This whole experience was starting to become more trouble than it was worth. Still, it had to be done, and Butterscotch wasnât about to give up his mission without putting up a little more fight.
He knew he had to be careful. With Taffy now at the mercy of the reed maker he couldnât quite go over and tackle them or anything like that. How dastardly, taking a hostage! Dastardly and cunning. Butterscotch would have been impressed had it not been his faithful companion they were dealing with.
Once Matsu had moved off of him but was still in armâs reach the Herpetologist sat up and reached out for the otherâs arm. He grabbed the box with his other hand and pulled it into his lap, now fishing for something out of his coat pocket.
âI insist that you stay for this. So does Taffy! Donât you want to bond with us? Now, letâs see-â
Butterscotch pulled out a single key dangling from a faded purple carabiner and used the cuts of the key to tear through the sides of the cardboard box. Meanwhile, Taffy mosied on out of Matsuâs hand and crawled up to rest on their shoulder right next to their scarf, watching her owner finish tearing through the box and open it with one hand.
Time to find out what was in this ~*~mysterious~*~ package.
OSC Tuning | Butterscotch + Matsu | CH1 / Normal Days
Matsu wasnât listening to what Butterscotch was saying, instead focusing on trying to get away⊠But in what seemed like no time he was right there and grabbed their shirt.Â
âL-letâŠ!â Talking was so DIFFICULT when one was so short of breath as the ladder made Matsu. Something sharp to open it withâŠ? That was a threat wasnât it. He had a knife? They reached for the next rung, when Butterscotch tugged down on their shirt.
A little too roughly.Â
And they slipped.
Matsu opened their mouth, unable to make a sound as the single hand on the ladder lost hold. They were falling. They tried to grab the ladder again, but with absolutely no luck⊠so their expression was one of wide-eyed fear.
Oh dear.
The consequence of his actions showed itself in no time at all. Butterscotch watched as Matsu lost their grip on the ladder and began to fall backwards right into him. This wasnât almost the opposite of he wanted (at least Matsu wasnât going up anymore. Just down, very quickly, towards him).
Everything that happened within the next few seconds went by in a blur. Butterscotch made a good attempt to keep the box held under his arm as he let go of Matsuâs shirt and tried his best to catch the reed maker. It was the least he could do. Being no expert in catching people, what he managed to do was sort of get his arms around them before their body collided with his, sending the two toppling over onto the ground.
If whatever was in the package was delicate or sensitive, there was a good chance it was in pieces now. That was one of the last worries on Butterscotchâs mind as he now found himself laying on the ground with someone on top of him. Quickly he let go of Matsu and tried to look around for his lizard companion.
Thankfully she was fine. In the midst of the collision Taffy had made her way onto Matsu and was now standing on their chest, not appearing rattled in the least. Instead she wasnât even looking at either one of them, instead facing towards the ladder in disinterest.
Since everything was fine and dandy and peachykeen, Butterscotch continued on with his mission as if nothing happened.
âRight, so, now that youâre here, how about you hop off and we can go open that box.â
Catching Up | Butterscotch + Mei | CH1 / Normal Days | Motive Reaction
Mei was still watching the mayor retreat on his bird, an insult still on the tip of her tongue, when a voice right next to her shook her out of her concentration. Languidly, she turned to her side to face this other person.
And just like that, so many of her thoughts were blotted out with just one word:
âLizard.â
Really? Reeeally, Mei? Ten seconds of introspection, all gone the moment you see some tall kid in a kigurumi.
But how could she not take notice of the sight before her? Their face was totally obscured by their mask and goggles and messy purple bangs, and right now their key identifying feature was their choice of clothing to wear to this very important meeting. There wasnât much else for Mei to focus on except for lizard.
(Second thought: Did Kimicchi know about this person yet? Sheâd probably love everything about their appearance and Mei had half a mind to seek her out right this second andâ)
And didnât they say something directly to Mei? How long had she been standing here spacing out, again? (Three and a half seconds, as it turns out; a tiny blip of time but a long moment for a conversation to stall on.) They were⊠talking about the mayorâs latest and worst announcement yet, right. The brief wonder and surprise on Meiâs face relaxed, leaving just an exhausted expression.
âSuch an ugly joke. What is the word for when a school or a friend tries to prank you as a rite of passage? Because I donât like that and I donât like whatever the mayo-mayorâs up to.â
It was a roundabout way of saying that she agreed that this was all just a prank gone too far, or possibly even some sort of hazing ritual. For such a prestigious school to sink that low, howeverâŠ! Abandoning them to some foreign desert and leave a single guy in a fake tattered banner to order them around! And he scarcely even acknowledged them or their complaints. (Not that Mei had really offered any complaints⊠Did she need to send that in official format through a letter? Was that the test?)
âCould be a school ritual? Do they want us to solve a puzzle or a mystery? Uwawa⊠But itâs so early for it⊠should have let us sleep more. Or give us more time to get ready instead of just threatening to drag us out.â
Her eyes flicked up and down as she looked over her new conversational partner once more, her blank look turning into a little smile.
âGood uniform. I couldnât get mine on in time. Too many knots and layers.â
(Was she implying this was his work outfit? What was she suggesting, that his talent was as a mascot or something?)
He wondered, after he spoke, whether he should have made it more obvious that he was addressing her. That as something he could keep in mind for later conversations. To his relief the person he had been addressing looked over in his general direction and spoke one word and one word only. It wasnât really an answer to his question but heâd accept it.
âAh, yes, you bring up a good point. Unless youâre addressing me, as a whole, to which you are correct; I am indeed a lizard. Youâve seen through my clever disguise! I congratulate you.â
Butterscotch had managed to fill the silence just long enough for Mei to soak in what he had previously said and give him a more coherent answer. Meanwhile, he decided to give the person he was talking to more than just a quick glance. It was amusing that the two seemed to be night and day; one ready to go out and face the day while the other appeared (or so he assumed) to go right back under a rock and hide from the world. He unconsciously moved his hands to smooth out a few wrinkles on his onesie, as if to make himself a little more presentable.
Thankfully both seemed to share the same view of the situation. However, when presented with the question of wording, Butterscotch hesitated for a few moments as he wracked his brain for the answer. He knew the word! It was on the tip of his tongue.
âI think that word is⊠<Hazing.>.â He muttered the word in English before remembering what he actually wanted to say. âHazing, mmm. I donât entirely think thatâs what this is but I very well could be wrong. Iâm certainly not a fan of what him and his bird are up to.â
Whether the bird was actually in on this whole thing or simply a means of transportation for Monobear he didnât care; it was best to assume it was in cahoots with him until proven otherwise.
âI donât remember reading anything like this when I was looking into Hopeâs Peak Academy. You would think that if there was something here for us to figure out theyâd go about it in a different, less threatening way. I figured the Japanese to be a little more respectable towards their students, let alone students who are fancypants geniuses, as he so well put it.â
Yet again, if there was something they were supposed to figure out, putting them under pressure like this would display their problem solving skills in tough situations. Still, the idea didnât sit well with him.
The mention of a uniform caused him to stumble over his thoughts. He ran over the last thing he said in his mind again then let out a small laugh, shaking his head.
âThis would be a good uniform, wouldnât it? But itâs not very practical in my line of work. If people took me seriously before they wouldnât with this! These are pretty comfy to sleep in but thatâs about it.â
Speaking of uniforms, he had glossed over proper introductions again. One day he would learn how to talk to someone like a decent human being. Until then, he would have to learn from his mistakes. Butterscotch fought the urge to stick out his hand for a handshake and instead started his introduction.
âI go by Butterscotch, but youâre free to call me a nickname if thatâs easier for you. Iâm a Herpetologist, so thatâs why what Iâm wearing wouldnât really be wise for me. And you are?â
OSC Tuning | Butterscotch + Matsu | CH1 / Normal Days
Matsu stepped out of their room, FREE from their roommates, and started walking towards the godforsaken ladder when -
They stiffened, freezing, when they heard Butterscotch call that stupid nickname that he insisted on using for them. The reedmaker stared at him, contemplated for a moment⊠Oh god he was holding the box. Had he opened it? Was he mad?Â
A split second more, and they made their decision. So what if the ladder was in the same direction as him? It was really close to them! If they made it there. And climbed up. Faster than he could (what a joke) then maybeâŠ.
They bolted. They could hardly breathe by the time they reached the ladder, and they started trying to scramble, up. Painfully slow, gasping for breath. Matsu was starting to feel lightheaded and they werenât even close to halfway up the ladder⊠Oh god they were going to die on this fucking piece of shit ladder, everything was so hot and their chest was burningâŠ
Not even a wave or a âHelloâ. All Butterscotch got in response was a look he couldnât identify and nothing else. He wondered whether Matsu was approaching him when they began to move again but it appeared that they were heading over to the ladder. Alright then. As long as they could hear him Butterscotch supposed he could speak.
âI have a story to tell you! Quite odd, really. As I was leaving my lair I found this package sitting in front of my doorstep with only my name on it! It must be someone who knows me well; someone who knows my deep dark secret. How else would they know to send me a box? Certainly they must know⊠of my terrible, embarrassing fear of cardboard boxes! So, as you can imagine, opening this with only Taffy to comfort me isnât possible at all, and thus I would like your assistance in opening it. You seem like the type who is very good at opening boxes.â
During his ramble Butterscotch managed to move across the Town Square and arrive at the ladder right as Matsu was doing their best to climb up and flee the scene. With the box under one of his arms the boy reached out and took a hold of the side of Matsuâs shirt, continuing to prattle on.
âIf youâre off to look for something sharp to open it with I already have you covered! So, get back down here and letâs discover whatâs inside this little square of mystery together!â
He tugged on their shirt to emphasize his point that Matsu wasnât going anywhere without difficulty. Maybe he tugged a little too hard...
OSC Tuning | Butterscotch + Matsu | CH1 / Normal Days
After dealing with Monobearâs threats and a light conversation, Butterscotch decided to hole himself in his room for the rest of the morning and halfway through the afternoon. When he was ready to merge and face the rest of the day he placed a hand on the doorknob and swung his bedroom door open, his mind drifting on what to-
There was something waiting for him.
Butterscotch tilted his head downwards and stared at the thing sitting in front of him, blocking his path towards Town Square. There was already little room left in the main Fennec area to begin with and this- this thing practically took up the rest of the walking area.
What was this box doing here and what did it want from him?
Slowly he crouched down and read the crude message written on the side of the box, addressed to a name that shouldnât be muttered in polite company. The handwriting was familiar, and when he saw his name scribbled underneath the inappropriate nickname he knew who it was from in an instant.
That did little to quell his unease and curiosity. Butterscotch stayed silent and motionless, mulling over what to do with this mysterious box, but before he could decide on anything the gecko on his shoulder began advancing down his arm.
âTaffy?â
Even with concern drenched in his voice she continued to crawl down towards the box. Butterscotch started to move the hand on his other side to try and stop her from moving any closer but it was too late! She stepped off his arm and onto the flat cardboard surface.
And then! THEN! Nothing happened.
That was a good sign, at least. Butterscotch scooped the leopard gecko up off the box and set her back on her shoulder. Now that it was confirmed safe to touch (and hopefully safe to handle) he carefully picked the box up and stood up. It was time to go pay a certain someone a visit.
He didnât have to look far. The moment he stepped out of the Fennec area, someone else was heading out of their dorm area as well. A certain Matsu Ito. What luck! Butterscotch had to stop himself from sounding too pleased as he stepped away from the Fennec area and towards Matsu.
âSweeetttttTart~!â
Catching Up | Butterscotch + Mei | CH1 / Normal Days | Motive Reaction
-BANG!-
-Thump.-
Something hit Butterscotch in the face
It took him several seconds to piece together what had happened. One moment, he was halfway through a magazine he had picked up several hours ago for some early morning reading (he had meant for it to be light reading, but, lo and behold, every article was captivating! And the photography⊠every picture was a work of art). The next moment, the sound of gunfire shot off somewhere very close by and he couldnât even see where it had came from. The sound wasnât unfamiliar to Butterscotch. It reminded him of several instances from days long, long ago. And just like before, it made his heart race in his chest and lights flash before his eyes.
Any chance of falling back asleep soon had gone out the nonexistent window of his room.
By the time Butterscotch got to his feet something was being broadcasted on the television set in the main room. The voice was familiar and it didnât take much to deduce who it was. If he ignored the request to scurry outside to the Town Square heâd be hogtied? It was tempting to but that to the test but, alas, he didnât want to mess up his new favorite set of pajamas. By the sounds of it wouldnât be prudent to linger around for very long. Getting changed was out of the question.
He was probably one of the first to arrive in the Town Square. Replacing his lab coat was what he would call âthe best and most comfortable thing to sleep in in the worldâ. To others, maybe not, but hey- it was hard to deny that a Komodo Dragon Kigurumi was kind of cool. The hood was tossed back, revealing his messier than usual purple hair pulled back into a sloppy ponytail/bun hybrid, and as usual 95% of his face was covered with his goggles and mask. The epitome of late-night fashion.
At least Monobear was there this time and didnât leave everyone to wait in suspense. Unfortunately, what he had to say wasnât what anyone wanted to hear. If he wanted to listen to someone go off on him he would have stayed h- No, wait, heâd take that back. He wasnât sure what which would have been worse.
Monobear helped him figure that out moments later.
âA full set of limbs. Five senses. If ya donât kill someone, thatâs getting taken away!â
What was that?
It was one thing to keep them in some deserted area in the desert with no means to reach the outside world and expect them to even toy with the idea of murdering one another. Threatening them like this? Stealing away something that would hinder them in whatever they did and enjoyed?
Preposterous.
Butterscotch clenched his fists at his sides and shook his head slowly, forcing out a soft sigh. There was no way that Monobear could ever be able to do something like that to them and get away with it so easily, not with there being so many of them versus, what? Him and the giant bird from before? Avoiding the bird would be no problem. Avoiding anything Monobear would do⊠again, how many of him against how many of them?
He couldnât believe he was losing valuable reading time and/or sleeping time for this. Butterscotch turned his head and looked around at how everyone else was taking the threat. Standing right next to him was someone he hadnât had the chance to chat with yet. There was no better way to bound than complain about some madman threatening them if they didnât murder each other, right?
Taking a step closer to her, the Herpetologist unclenched his fists and tried to relax his body and free it of any tension it may have. Then, hoping to gain the otherâs attention, he cleared his throat and emitted a loud huff that made his mask puff out a little for a second.
âCalling us out here so early in the morning to threaten us.. then he has the nerve to swoop away without another word! Taking an elaborate prank a little too far, wouldnât you say?â
SO YOU WANNA BE A MURDERER?
INTRODUCTION TO VOLUNTEERS:Â
For the most part, our How to Play section is pretty accurate! Except one thing:
Weâre primarily accepting volunteer murderers!
That is, instead of relying on rolling, itâs more of a last resort thing for:
If more than one murderer wants a Go and they all volunteered at around the same time (while not necessarily first come first served, earlier is better!),
If nobody volunteers.
In those two cases, we pull out the olâ 1d30 and give it a few shakes. You still only have one pass, though.
We accept volunteer requests at basically any time! Though if it is later than Monday of the first week (ie: the normdays week), then you probably wonât have a shot at being a murderer at that week. This is because we need quite a bit of that murder done by Thursday or Friday of the same week, and weâd rather give the murderer + victim duo as much time as possible to plan, and the mods as much time as possible to write descriptions!
But more on that later.
So if you ever get a hankerinâ for killinâ, just ring one of us up at any time and weâll put you into consideration.
⊠though this week has already been claimed! Woopsie. I mean, we do have a body drop in like a few days.
The Little End of the Horn
So you had two choices: go, or stay behind and earn Monobearâs wrath.
Whether or not you cared about getting tied up and dragged along like Monobear promised, there was one particular reason why you go out regardless:
Listening to him ramble angrily at you in shitty Western sounds like True Hell. ⊠okay, okay. You could totally have other reasons, but the shitty Western is still really shitty Western.
When you arrive at the Town Square, thereâs Monobear. He actually does seem genuinely upset, goofy Western aside. Good. Asshole kinda deserves it for trying to make you all kill each other (and expecting for it to happen. gotta put a ring [or a murder weapon] on it first).
As soon as you are all accounted for â and he waits with surprising patience â he launches into an angry little tirade.
âOI! What in tarnationâs goinâ on here?! I thought I told yaâll to get to killinâ, and I ainât seen a single drop oâ blood yet! Or, well, from good olâ fashioned killinâ, anyway. So what gives? Iâm the mayor of this fine establishment! Says so on my mayoral stash here. Yaâll go by my rules.âÂ
He puffs out his chest, proudly displaying the shoddy burlap sash with â is that marker? Did he write mayor in marker? Who the heck is this bozo?!
"C'mon though. Yaâll canât really be fine and dandy with stayinâ here forever, can ya? This hot, muggy olâ desert, seeinâ the same faces anâ eatinâ the same food⊠heck, some of yaâll might grow old enough to start makinââ er, wait, letâs keep this PG-13.â
âBut anyways, it canât really be what you want, right?â
Nobody answers.
â⊠right?â
After a few minutes of dead silence, he looks away from the group and forces out a high-pitched squeal from one side of his mouth, trying (and mostly failing) to keep his mouth closed and make it seem like someone else was saying it. (Spoilers: He wasnât fooling no-one.)
ââYa darn tootinâ, Mr. Mayorbear-Bloom!ââ
âRight-o then! So! Beinâ the good olâ mayor that I am, Iâll give yaâll a little kick in the olâ rump to get those hooves goinâ! So now yer probâly wonderinâ, âMr. Mayorbear, what can ya do to me?ââ
He throws his hands up and begins to pace back and forth in front of you, talking without a single pause to let you interject⊠as if youâd want to â he seems like the kind of guy who likes to hear himself talk, and it also seems like he has a gun, so you canât really do much except suffer through it.
âWell, as far as you know, yaâll are here âcause yer a bunch oâ fancypants geniuses who got pretty far in whatever it is yer doinâ, and now yer livinâ the good life in your talents. Yâdonât get that far without likinâ it, yâknow? Or at least doinâ it a lot nâ whatnot. And to do that stuff, ya need those, er. Whatchamacallems â oh, right!â
âA full set oâ limbs. Five senses.â
⊠what?
âIf ya donât kill someone, thatâs gettinâ taken away! Iâll give yaâll three days before I start puttin Olâ Reliable here to good use, yeah?â
He pulls off the strip of leather that strapped the hunting rifle to his back and holds it in his arms, giving it a loving pat. Huh. He really does kinda look like a cowboy with that. An evil, creepy, murderous cowboy.
Geez, why does he keep smiling? Oh, right. Murderous cowboy.
âIâm sure I donât gotta remind yaâll that some of yaâll need this. For some of you, this is all ya got. Lose it, and wellâŠâ
Cue dramatic pause.
âI guess you really will be useless after all, huh?â
For a while, everythingâs silent, too. Sure, your newfound surroundings was never really loud â most of the background noise comprised of the wind blowing, your classmates moving around and talking, and the leaves in the trees rustling in the wind. But now the wind stops, becoming almost unnaturally still. The air feels even hotter.
And then Monobear talks again, and everything seems normal. Aside from the new tension in the air.
âAnywhoo, thatâs it! Have fun, kids~!â
You can hear the tilde in his voice as he spins around on one heel and marches off towards the cliff. Wait, what is he doiâ oh god, he jumpedâ
Thereâs the sound of thunder, again, and a familiar grey form swoops down and catches him in its claws and slowly lifts him up and away. He just waves at you merrily, like nothingâs wrong at all.
âAnd remember, three daaaaaaays!â
Thanks, asshole.
Time for a Moo-tive. Get it. Because cowboys.
Three days since the bear had descended from the skies from his giant bird to tell the students their new predicament: kill, or stay trapped here forever. Or try to escape and die trying, one way or another.
It really put a damper on the whole situation.
Whether or not you thought it was all just a joke or took it seriously, there was no denying the cloud of tension that hung in the air, like humidity after a heavy rain.
But⊠it got better, over time. Nobody had died. You were trapped, sure, but maybe your fellow peers were worth some amount of trust â or at least, a tiny bit of faith. Maybe nobody would kill. Maybe you all could hold out until the police came, searching for their prized, missing âhopeâ.
But for now â as the loud, ensuing sound from the TV jolts you awake and reminds you â youâre still here.
BANG!Â
Itâs a fucking gunshot. The loudest, most ear-piercing gunshot sound youâd ever heard â if you ever heard one to begin with. If not, well congrats on the new experience! There are a few more blaring, single gunshots before the sound is replaced with something more:
âHOOOOO-WEE!â
âNow yer done it. Yaâll really fucked up now, dinâcha?! Thought you could be slicker than a turtle covered in butter, eh?!â
âGetâcher tails over to the Town Square, now! Attendance is MAN-durr-tory!â
âOr Iâll tie you up like a stuffed hog and drag ya there mâself!â
Oh boy.
Welcome Home | Butterscotch | Chapter 1 / Normal Days | Reaction + Items
Finally, the arrival of the Mayor. Ever since he had learned of their existence on the mysterious ID card found in his pocket Butterscotch couldnât get it off of his mind. For three whole days they were left to wander around, to get used to their surroundings and to each other, and during that time he had wondered whether the Mayor was a person at all but an idea. Or if it was that Coyote statue. He wouldnât have been all that surprised.
The announcement had dragged him and the rest out into the Town Square with nothing to show for it. Really, if you were going to call someone to somewhere it was only polite to be there before everyone else. This wasnât even where the coyote statue was! Once again, the statue proved disappointing.
Then there they were. âThe Mayorâ, Butterscotch presumed. In all honesty he was much more interested in the fact that there had been a large bird carrying the newcomer and couldnât give them his full attention until the magic words âyou aint leaving hereâ escaped their lips.
Well, you have his attention now, Mister Mayor.
The rest of what he had to say was just as alarming as the first part. âThere is one way to get out. Kill someoneâ Butterscotch found himself unable to find the voice or intelligible words to express how he felt about the conversation. Which was good, since the Mayor didnât want to waste time on questions (Any question Butterscotch ahd wouldnât have been stupid at all! Thinking otherwise was insulting. One of the many good questions he could have asked fitting for the situation was âWhat the actual hellâ).
The Mayorâs departure left a horrible taste in Butterscotchâs mouth. Slowly pivoting on his foot to turn away from everyone, the boy pulled out a cinnamon drop from his pocket and popped it into his mouth.
Hmmm, best not to dwell on the news. Might as well check out these coins the Mayor mentioned and go from there. Whatever feeling the Mayorâs announcement had brought to Butterscotch changed in an instant he saw the coins. Like a small child he snatched them from his desk and set off to where he could use these strange new tokens at. It was at the strange capsule machine that he used two of his three coins and receivedâŠ!:
Paint Tool Sai
Itâs a sai, with bristles replacing the normally-metal blade! It seems to be finely-crafted, though what its purpose actually is is rather questionable. Maybe you can paint with it?
Theremin: An Electronic Odyssey
A documentary which centers on the amazing life of Leon Theremin, the inventor of the first electronic synthesiser instrument and his subsequent life after he was abducted by the KGB, all while providing a history of his instrument. Itâs a must-own for anyone who wants the right to call themselves a serious theremin devotee.
Ah, well, a book wasnât so bad.
After taking care of some business, Butterscotch decided to use his third coin in hopes he would get something that would ignite a spark in him, something worthy of his ownership.
Instead, he received:
Suddenly! SNOW
If youâre ever craving that arctic rush without the cold, hereâs the product just for you! Just pour out a small amount of Suddenly Snow crystals, add water, and watch the snow grow and grow and GROW, creating mountains of cool, puffy play⊠stuff. Just one tube can make up to six cups of fluffy snow fun! If it starts to dry off, just spritz it with some water and itâll come right back up! This product isnât toxic, but it tastes really gross!
He sighed.
Today was turning out to be horribly⊠disappointing.
Death is Just a Heartbeat Away
âŠBut nobody does. The sense of deep unease lingers, however. Can you really trust anyone here? Sure, nobodyâs attacking right now, but maybe theyâre just waiting until there wonât be witnesses.
âGood. I hate wastinâ time on stupid questions. Like âbut why, Mister Mayor, killinâ is wrong!â or âbut I hate gettinâ my hands dirty, why wonât you shoot someone for me?â Now, with that settled, Iâll be outta your hair. I will be watchinâ you, and if you need meâŠdonât you worry. Iâll know. Just call for ole Monobear.â
You canât help but wonder what kind of name that is.
âOh, and one last thing. Now, if  yâall are gonna be sayinâ things like âhey, this ainât fair, I donât have a gun, and you do,â first off, be more creative. Second, fine, you win. I got a little machine set up over yonder. Put in coins, get someâŠuhâŠâ
ââŠI donât remember last night too well, thereâs probably weapons in there. Probably other stuff too. I dunno, yâall work it out. Not my problem. Yâall got three of âem now, so spend wisely. Check the top of your dresser, theyâre there.â
âAnyways, happy huntinâ!â
And then heâs gone, leaving you with a lingering sense of uneaseâŠ
The Killing Fields
âFirst things first. You ainât leavinâ here. Not now, not never. Now, if you ainât noticed, thereâs not a soul around for miles. You try to leave, you die out in that desert. Assuminâ you survive the fall from the cliffs. So donât get any bright ideas. WellâŠâ
He puts a hand to his chin, in mock thought.
âLemme take that back. There is one way to get out.â
âKill someone.â
Regardless of the heat, a chill runs down your spine. The shadows cast by the morning sun feel even deeper now.
âThatâs right. Now, mind you, itâll take twoâ I ainât that easy to pleaseâ but thatâs all you have to do. Well, thereâs a few other, whaddya call âem, stipulations. Weâll worry about that when we get there. But other than that. Simple. So. Any questions?â
You wait, ill at ease, for someone, anyone, to do something. Isnât anyone disturbed enough by this to actâŠ?
