The question sent a pang of pain shooting through her chest. She remembered fire scorching over her skin, watching flickers of orange and yellow consume everything in sight, burning the landscape black and brittle, coating her in ash. She’d choked on smoke and watched trees she’d nurtured for years, that grew for centuries before she was born, reduced to skeletons of char that crumbled in the wind. She’d barely survived. And what hadn’t been laid to waste in the area had been left like this, poisoned and withered. Through ash or some venomous magic, she did not know. She only knew she could feel their pain lingering beneath her skin, a new hollow pit deep inside her where the forests of the spring court once bloomed. She pinched her lips together and tried to force a smile, anything to keep from crying. She’d already shed too many tears. So instead she smiled and looked up towards this stranger. He seemed kind enough and perhaps that was a blessing in itself. “I’ve noticed it throughout these woods,” she admitted, dusting her palms off on the leaves folded over her legs in a skirt. “It isn’t everywhere, but I’ve seen it fell trees and suck the life from entire fields.” Her weak smile faded.

he frowned, his brow furrowing at the woman’s words. maybe it was a fae thing, to be very in touch with nature, but he always found himself gravitating towards the forest. trees, flowers, bushes; plants of all kinds always had a soft spot in his heart. something about the way they breathed life into everything around them, how they made a place beautiful and serene all at once. there was something so amazing in how they provided for the world around them--it broke his heart, knowing something was hurting them in such a horrible way. 

“that’s awful,” he replied, wishing he could say more. for how much he loved plants, he didn’t know much about them. “and you have no idea what can cause this?” he felt bad asking her, thinking he already knew the answer, but wanting to make sure. “because if it’s magic, well. you just need to find more powerful magic to help it, right?”

adella had been resting on a beach, eyes shut and enjoying the way that the sunlight danced across her skin. it was a wonderful feeling – the heat, the scent of salt in the air, and the sound of waves crashing against the shoreline somewhere in the background. the young woman found herself wiggling her toes in the sand, letting the grains fall down and disappear in the mass. fingers, combed through it, as the wind combed through her hair. 

the idyllic scene quickly found an end as she heard someone call out to her, and yet she couldn’t see anyone on eye level. before she could even come to comprehend that the person had been flying she felt another body collide with her own. it forced her onto her back, her hair dipped into the sand as a laugh escaped her lips. she had not expected her day to take such a turn.

she found herself pinned beneath the other, ‘ well, hello? ‘ her head tilted to the side, neck craned back so she could get a better look at the other. 

it took him a moment to recover--crashes always did that to him, leaving him breathless and off-balance. he stared down at the woman below him and well--he guesses it could have been worse. he could’ve ran straight into the unseelie queen, for example (that interaction will haunt him for the rest of his days). instead, he ended up on top of a really stunning woman. yeah, not the worst thing to happen in his life. he cracked a smile at the womans laughter, feeling some tension leave his shoulders, “hey there. hope i didn’t interrupt anything.”

realizing he had probably been on top of her for a moment too long, he quickly got off of her, holding a hand out to the girl once he was standing, “i’m sorry for running into you, miss. are you alright?” he gave her a--hopefully--apologetic smile, “if theres anyway i can make it up to you, i will.”

mab was no stranger to the ways of magic. far over a thousand years of it allowed her a fair amount of knowledge in its ins and outs, how each action must old the right intent or it fails. a single thought off track could lead to disastrous consequences if one was careless. the words of caution called out, mab’s respone was swift. the cool winds served little issue to her and with a sharp wave of her hand they ceased.       

❛  you should be more careful , frost. you never know who or what you’ll wander into .  ❜ especially in these areas. while mab herself never acted before thinking, there were many in her court who through caution to the wind. not that she’d ever expected any less with a following of all manner of fair and dark creatures alike. the words that followed were offered with a sharp smile, eyes darkening.

jack fell to the ground in a heap at the queens quick movements, his heart threatening to beat out of his chest. he didn’t like to get into the mess that was fae politics; the unseelie court and seelie court held close to no meaning for him. that’s why he didn’t consider himself a part of either--he’d prefer to stay as far away from those blood feuds as he could. but just because he didn’t want to be involved, that didn’t mean he didn’t know royalty when he saw them. cursing his bad luck, he scrambled to a standing position to face the queen. 

“I’m sorry, your highness,” he quickly apologized, not exactly sure if he was supposed to address her as such but felt compelled to do so anyways. if he was lucky, he might be able to get out of this interaction just fine (though, the look in her eyes had him worried). “i’ll...be much more careful next time.”

Malcolm glared back, eyes narrowing as he looked them over then took a testing sniff of the air; he wasn’t human. That didn’t ease Malcolm at all but at least it made more sense for the younger appearing man to be this far out in the woods. Even before picking up on the scent the man’s odd wording was enough of a give away, no human mourned trees being defenseless or would question someone for carrying an ax in a forest. This man reeked of fae and Malcolm eyed him warily for it. “Whatever I need it for.” He replied dryly while sharp eyes swept around the area to make sure there wren’t others nearby he was being distracted from.

“oooh, mysterious,” jack stage whispered, jumping down from the branch to land in front of the other man, watching him carefully. he knew better than to just trust strangers in the middle of the forest, knew to watch every movement in case he found a reason to get out of there as quick as he could. he eyed the other, “but i feel like you should give me a straight answer, considering you’re the one who started questioning me first. i’m just curious, is all.”

what is the worst accident you have gotten into whilst flying ? and what is your favorite ability ?

“diving head first into a crowd of people is never a great experience,” jack cringed at the memory, rubbing the back of his neck, “i’m pretty sure i knocked over at least half a dozen people, most of them looked ready to kill me.” he paused, giving a half smile, “my favorite ability is easily flying, even if i always hurt myself doing it. that or making snow--snow balls are the best weapons.”

“I used to love rabbits,” jack mused with a slight grin, “but then I met Bunnymund, and well. that love disappeared really quick. but they still are my favorites--why?” he paused, shrugging, “They’ve got cute tails.”

“snakes, first and foremost,” jack tilted his head thoughtfully, his brow furrowing, “second, uh...oh, small places, probably. third...huh,” he shrugged, “i can’t really think of anything.” He knew what it was, he just didn’t want to say it--he was scared, more than anything, that he was never going to be able to die. 

Zeus: three places you want to travel to

“Wonderland, Atlantica, and Oz,” jack answered automatically, “I’ve never been to any of those kingdoms, mostly because I’m pretty sure I’d freeze the ocean if I tried to go down to Atlantica. Me and water don’t really mix.”

“Of course I do,” Jack answered with a shrug, “People die and come back to life all the time, so there has to be something in between there.”

“Well, if I told you, that’d be besides the point, right?” Jack questioned with a grin, though the smile didn’t truly meet his eyes. And really, what disturbed him more than anything, what scared him to his very core, was something most people would love to have: immortality.

“I never learned how to swim!” Jack exclaimed with a laugh at the edge of his words, “That’s probably a talent I wish I could learn. It can’t be that hard, right?”

“I don’t know if anyone knows about this, obviously,” jack chuckled softly, holding up his wrist to show off the wooden bracelet, “but when I get nervous or upset, I break off tiny pieces from the wood. this bracelet used to be way bigger.”

“I still have the shirt I woke up in,” he answered with a shrug, “it was wet and cold and I was never going to wear it again but…I still have it. I don’t know why I keep it.” he knew, of course he did, but he didn’t want to say it out loud.

Most of the people Jim came across were either sailors, pirates, or people simply interested in exploring the ocean. Which was more than fine, Jim loved nothing more than a good story of adventure with high stakes and even higher reward. But at the end of the day, the ocean was just a means to the end. A massive body of water. Great. He could see water every day. But the sky? The clouds above him? How many people could say they’d been up there?

He spent more than his fair share of time with his head in the clouds, though most of what he saw were birds, bugs, and falling leaves. So a man suddenly soaring past was absolutely a strange sight to see. Before he could think, Jim’s body rolled well out of the away to avoid any sort of collision. What did you use to fly? How did you get up there? Where were you headed? Did you get very high? And a thousand other questions threatened to spill from his lips, but the man’s safety needed to be addressed first.

“Hey!” Jim called out to him. “You okay?”

Barely missing the stranger had both its upsides and downsides--the general upside being he didn’t run over someone he didn’t know, but the downsides being that he was still very much stuck in the air. Though, while he was still stuck--he was pretty sure he’d be stuck until the wind decided to let up--he did manage to snag onto a branch that was hanging just low enough for him to grab. He hauled himself up onto the branch, making sure to keep a firm grasp of it before he looked down at the man calling to him. He shook his head with a smile, saying, “Never been better!”

He glanced around, pausing briefly before looking back down at the man, “Hey, sorry for almost running into you. Could you tell me where I am? I lost track after I left Arendell.” he paused,  realizing he probably should make sure that guy didn’t hurt himself doing that pretty cool roll. “also, I didn’t get you hurt, did I? You were pretty fast to get out of the way.”

The breeze was extraordinarily strong today, so much so that Charlie found himself being more or less blown down the hilly path, doing his best to keep his feet on the ground to avoid being swept away entirely. “Whoa there,” he called out to his hat as it whipped off the top of his head and he took a few stumbling steps before he could reach out and grab it again, shoving it back on with gusto. 

Suddenly, he heard someone behind him call out in warning, but it was too late. Bam, and Charlie was knocked to the ground with the force of something slightly stronger than the wind. He never much minded being run into, since it didn’t strictly, you know, hurt. The worst thing that could happen was that bits of his straw body would fly every which way on impact– which they were, in fact, currently doing. At least he hadn’t lost any limbs - but he had lost quite a bit of chest. “Aww, man,” he said to himself, scrambling on his knees to get up and try to catch the bunches of straw that were tumbling across the grass in the breeze so he could stuff them back in his shirt and go about his way. 

Wait, what had even hit him in the first place? He stopped mid-task to glance up and see what had run into him.

One thing that always managed to knock him out of the air was running straight into people, apparently. He sat up with a small groan from where he had been effectively pushed off of the wind, rubbing the back of his head as he looked around to see just who he had to thank for getting him out of that predicament. his mouth, which usually worked faster than his brain on a daily basis, opened before he could stop it, “are you made out of straw?”

he internally cringed at his own exclamation--that wasn’t exactly the nicest thing he could say to the stranger he had just ran into. he cleared his throat awkwardly, standing up to move closer to the stranger, “I mean, uh--sorry for running into you! I couldn’t stop but uh, thanks for not moving? You helped me get off that ride.” he paused, leaning down to grab a handful of straw that tried to fly past him, “oh, here you go? I think this belongs to you.”

you would think that 300 or so (he never kept track of his age, really, after he figured out he didn’t actually age) years was enough time to figure out what, exactly, he could do with his magic. sure, he knew the basics--ice and snow, cold and freeze. those things were simple; if a kid wanted to go ice skating, all he had to do was touch the lake for it to freeze over. if people hated how hot the summers were, all he had to do was twirl his hand and a cold breeze would wash over the land in a second. 

but the one ability he had never been able to completely control, though, was flying. and, well, it was still the most fun power he had, so it wasn’t like he was going to not use it. even if using it usually ended up in him smacking face first into a tree, or not being able to stop riding the wind when he wanted to, leaving him floundering in the air like a fish out of water... 

and, well, it was in one of those exact situations jack found himself in now. all he wanted to do was ride the wind back towards the seasonal realms--he had visited arendelle just to help their ice business in the summer months--but the winds seemed to have a different plan for him. now he was stuck on a current he didn’t want to be on, not being able to get off, headed straight for-- “Watch out!”

Sage lay sprawled in the grass, brow furrowed as she stared at a small wilting flower. The poor thing had been struggling to bloom in this area of the woods for several days and she couldn’t figure out why. Sage sighed, placing two fingers on the stem and shimmying them up along the vine, pouring magic into the plant. For a moment the flower’s coloring saturated, vine, petals and all, but it only lasted a moment before the leaves shriveled up again, a brown tinge staining the plant. Sage sighed, “it has to be some kind of magic, doesn’t it? It should be getting better.”

The seasonal realms was one of jack’s favorite places--not only because of how cold their winters were, but also because of how beautiful every inch of the land was. the trees, the flowers, the rivers; it was all breathtaking, especially during this time of year. so when he happened upon a girl looking worriedly over a flower, well, he was of course going to investigate what, exactly, was happening. Jack frowned as he leaned closer to the flower, careful not to actually touch it or the grass surrounding it; he had learned that, despite his best efforts, his magic never truly enjoyed staying under control. if the girl wanted to keep this flower healthy, it was probably for the best that he didn’t freeze it to death on top of whatever else had cursed the poor thing. “why would someone hurt such a small thing?” he questioned, tilting his head to look at the girl, “has this been happening to any other plants around here?”

Walking down a path Malcolm knew by heart back to his home he stilled when drawing closer and realizing someone was nearby. Axe tight in hand he slowly stalked the trail, looking for whatever presence he was sensing. Almost half his life living in these very woods had him tuned into the environment, to it’s very air. Once within sight of the disturbance Malcolm grit out a sigh from his tightened jaw to see someone out in the middle of the forest. There was a reason Malcolm stayed in the forest by himself and right then a stranger standing outside was part of that very reason. He didn’t like people and they never ventured in this far alone. “What are you doing here?”

“i feel like the real question is, what are you doing here carrying around an axe like a crazy man?” jack questioned from where he sat on a tree branch, peering down at the man in question. he had just been going on a little journey--it was too hot in the seasonal realms for his liking at this time of year--when he ran straight into a man with an axe. and jack wasn’t exactly the type to answer strangers questions when they looked like they were ready to hurt him. “also, i must ask, why do you even have an axe? please don’t tell me it’s too hurt these poor, defenseless trees.”
