Remarkable isn’t it, how quickly the venom of the basilisk penetrates the body? I’d guess you have little more than a minute to live. You’ll be with your dear Mudblood mother soon, Harry. Funny, the damage a silly little book can do…

I’m assuming you’ve seen the 1997 Rodger and Hammerstien’s Cinderella?
Well. I have.
I just rewatched it again a second ago.
So. This movie is wonderful. I sing along every time. Impossible makes me cry. So does both Little Corner songs. But I gotta say. One song and two characters always make me stop…
Calliope and Minerva.
Those two girls are spoiled rotten brats who treat Cinderella horribly. They’ve been brought by their mother to be conniving, manipulative little primadonnas.
But….is any of that really their faults? Their mother raised them like that. She taught them all of those twisted thoughts about love, marriage and all of that. She taught them to be conniving, manipulative little primadonnas. She taught them to treat Cinderella so horribly.
But…in the few moments where you see the stepmother let’s up for just a second, Minerva and Calliope ease up too. And they and Cinderella almost….get along.
They by no means, in those moments have a great relationship. But they almost seem to like her. And even repeatedly ask her opinion on things. Almost seeking her approval. And they obviously recognize that she’s beautiful. Why else would they be jealous of her?
And then there’s The Stepsisters Lament.
Oh, oh.
Why would a fellow want a girl like her,
So obviously unusual?
Why can’t a fellow ever once prefer
A usual girl like me?
……
“Why can’t a fellow ever once prefer, a usual girl like me?”
And you know what? You put Minerva and Calliope together, you’ve basically got me. A bigger, white girl, who is plain at best, and ugly at worst, who isn’t very lucky in love, is clumsy… Just.. I’m them.
And the sisters are right. Why can’t they?
This song makes me feel so conflicted.
Cause they’re supposed to be villains. Or at least side villains.
But how can I not feel for these girls when I practically am them?
OP, I get what you’re saying, I really do.
But, the thing that makes the stepsisters ugly isn’t what they look like physically. It’s whats in their hearts.
Its like that thing Roald Dahl said:
The reason Ella is so beautiful, even covered in soot and in old, dirty, torn clothes, after years of physical and emotional abuse, is because she is a kind person, with a good heart.
In the Broadway version of this movie, Crazy Marie, aka the Fairy Godmother, says to Ella, “Actually, I’m everyone’s fairy godmother, but you are the only person who has given me charity, generosity, and kindness.”
That is why the Prince falls in love with her.
They can’t show it in this movie, because it’s made-for-tv, and they have to cut out a lot of the more “unnecessary” parts, but when Ella arrives at the ball, the adviser, Sebastian, calls for a game to be played, called “Ridicule”. The game is basically who can come up with the most creative insults. But when it’s Ella and the stepmother’s turn, Ella complements her, the woman who made her life hell for years.
This shocks everyone. Its like they never heard of complementing people. But Ella introduces them to a new game, called “Kindness”, where you tell each person something you like about them. It completely changes the atmosphere at court, turning it from a hostile, fend for yourself environment, into a loving, supportive place.
That is why Topher falls in love with Ella. In the movie, they show it differently. Right off the bat, when Topher meets Ella in the village, she tells him that she doesn’t think he knows how to treat a girl. He responds saying “like a princess”
Her reply? “No! Like a person, with kindness and respect.”
short, and to the point, but the same basic idea. Cinderella isn’t concerned with who you are, she will treat you with kindness and respect, and knows any good person would do the same.
I know the stepsisters aren’t at fault for how they act, their mother is. But that, i think, is also another moral of the story.
Look at the actresses. They aren’t ugly. They are beautiful. But the entire movie, their faces are scrunched up into frowns, their brows wrinkled, their noses upturned. They rarely smile. It isnt their bodies that make them ugly, its their attitudes.
They are beautiful women, but they are ugly in their hearts. That is because their mother taught them, not to be kind and generous, but to be selfish and self-centered. Cinderella is beautiful in her heart, because her father taught her to be kind.
That is the moral of the stepsisters: be kind to others, but realize that others look to you as an example. if you want a more beautiful, kind world, teach children to be kind. The beauty will naturally follow.
Thank you, honestly, for such an articulate response. Its honestly refreshing. And I do actually agree with you. I just remember seeing this as a kid and feeling the way I feel about The Stepsisters Lament, and feeling real shitty. I had manipulative, and neglectful parents, and I can identify with being a plain, overweight girl with some twisted ideas of how things work because that’s how I was taught by my family. I worked to get out of it, and it hurts seeing these girls be the villains, without it ever being addressed that they’re nearly as much of victims of Lady Tremaine as Cinderella is. I get your point, and you’re right. But yeah… Sentiments and feelings I guess.
