For those of you who may be interested, Elf Academy 4 has begun posting over at Stories of Arda. I am in a bit of a weird happy/sad emotional space right now after reading the first couple chapters. So many thanks to those who have brought this story to light, to his family for their kindness and permission to post, and to all of those who have already reviewed. It looks like it's going to be a hell of a ride, and it is an honor to take this journey with you all. i have said it before, but I have never witnessed such a supportive and kind community as i have found at Stories of Arda. Today I was out walking my dog in East Grand Rapids and this man pulled up and started taking pictures of me. I told him to delete every picture he took of me and he refused and said it was “public domain” to which I respond, “I am not public domain.” He continued on to dig in his wallet while I took pictures of his license plate and tried to lure me closer to his car with a little card he said was his business card but the text was handwritten (like seriously? Come on). I started screaming for him to delete every picture so everyone in the neighborhood and probably the next galaxy could hear and after much heated arguing he finally deleted them. As I’m running away he screamed “you got a nice set of tits and pussy,” (again, seriously?) at me all the way down the street. So I get home and call the police because I’m an idiot and was hoping maybe someone could help keep this creep off the streets (batman and I aren’t talking anymore). The operator briskly and coldly let me know that he was completely in the right and that regardless of consent, if you’re on public property, people can take pictures of you. She also informed me that his comments were also fine because its free expression. So since the police have refused to take action, I’m posting this here and on Facebook so people know there’s some Wilford Brimley looking motherfucker roaming Grand Rapids taking pictures of girls on the streets.

Matt and Sarah who ran the cameras and production were impressively patient and creative. Dr. Nick Blake, the physician, was amazing, gentle, and also super patient. We were there for about four hours and that’s after Dr. Blake spent a full work day delivering babies. Everyone was impressively great! I’m so grateful! And I have to say it was actually quite wonderful experiencing an exam with this crew and you the audience. I knew I was going to be in safe hands and indeed that was/ is the case.

Everyday Discrimination

So. After going to the ER seven times this month for my fiancee, we return to the hospital that seemed the most helpful again.

Let me set the scene: It’s a Catholic hospital. And we look like a couple of punk kids. My fiancee in a beanie, both of us with short hair, me with my eyebrow piercing. The doctor asks me if I am her sister or friend, and I say fiancee.

He then proceeds to accuse my finacee of abusing pain meds and pharm shopping, having multiple STDs, and lying about her previous diagnosis.

Here’s the truth: My fiancee is in the Navy and stationed at an Air Force base because she works on the electronic parts of planes. The Air Force clinic can’t get her in sooner than three weeks. Ever. The Navy clinic there is only for fliers and she isn’t one. She has to call this national nurse line every time she has symtoms that arent between 9am and 4pm M-F. Her symptoms have been so severe over the past month that they always refer us to the ER immediately. Except for the two times we went to Urgent Care, one of which just sent us on to the ER anyway. Her symptoms are real. We arent getting any answers and she is experincing severe chronic pain amoung about twenty other symptoms that I won’t list because it’s really rather unpleasant.

Here’s the truth: He just treated a Sailor and Child Welfare social worker like shit. Two people who do the jobs no one else will to keep our country and our people safe. Because we weren’t in uniform and a suit at 10pm on a Friday. Because the Navy won’t take care of one of their own. Because we’re gay.

Someone help me out here. When did becoming a medical professional go from helping people with health problems to having all these qualifiers? I mean, I know there are procedures that have to be followed for things like pain medication, because abuse is a thing that happens, but Jesus. So unprofessional. So unnecessary. So not right.

I'm so sorry this happened to you, and I really hope that you guys are okay & found the assistance you needed.

Because this is the internet, I suppose I must acknowledge that I am speaking from a place of relative privilege in that I am unlikely to ever experience this sort of treatment, and it pains me that anyone has to.

My thoughts on Tauriel

Might be irrelevant, but whatever.

Am I the only one who feels she was poorly developed? I don’t mind she was given a sword and a captain position. If men and women were equal for ALL the Elves, then Tauriel has indeed chances of being a captains of the guards. But for God’s sake! What happened to her in BoTFA (and partly in DoS) is horrible. Yeah, OK, PJ, you wanted to give us a strong feminine figure as though Galadriel wasn’t enough. But I can’t simply live with the fact that a captain threatens her king. Is anyone aware how disciplined and loyal are warriors supposed to be? They are supposed to defend their king, homeland and women and children. They are supposed to obey. And I don’t imagine just anyone is given the position of captain of guards. It is an important one. It is more than reporting to your king his borders are attacked. It is about having other soldiers respect you, it is about being in charge with the safety of the realm, it is about having your king trust you. Can you imagine the amount of awesome in a woman who can accomplish all these things?

But what does PJ does? He makes her fall in love with a Dwarf, defy her king for it and eventually pointing an arrow at him. For the name of love. No. Tauriel should have been in that tent with Thranduil and discuss their fighting strategy. “No, Lord, this we cannot risk.” or “I do agree with you.”

As for Kíli, I would have had a brief conversation between him and Tauriel. The captain has other duties to care of than minding a Dwarf stone with a promise bound it or whatever it was. Don’t Amralime me! That was seriously improper.

To sum it all up, I love Tauriel, but as a person who created a captain of guards OC, I cannot accept what she did and what happened to her. I want a woman who can stand for herself and also acknowledge her duties, not a crybaby. A crybaby would have never been a captain a soldier would have followed. Tauriel could have been great. And I would have been in love with her as I am with Éowyn had PJ not ruined his own creation.

I agree with a good portion of this. So you're not alone. :) To me Tauriel as a Film-only character (read: non-book canon) bugged me because it seemed like they took the warrior princess Arwen concept they ditched in Towers, slapped the go-to "my parents are dead so the higher ups to a shine to me" (which seemed to be only hinted at so i could be wrong or missed something) backstory and dropped her into the film with the direction of "go make yourself important somehow but not so important that we can't kill you off/write you out of the story if everyone hates you". When they could have done so much more interesting things with her.

you're already going to anger the uber-purists, why not push the boundaries a bit? It felt like a hastily written mary-sue-ish character (and, having written terrible fanfiction in my life, I know how easy that is to do and I respect those who write the good stuff :D).

The whole relationship-whatever going on between her and legsie and kili I could tolerate, I didn't *like* it, but there's folks I follow here on Tumblr that will vehemently defend that ship and its right to exist, and they can totally do that. It was when she showed up to save Kili from his injury and LITERALLY HAD A SHINY ARWEN MOMENT that I face-palmed in the theater in frustration. That, plus the way that she defies her king (a king I wish they had explained some things about more, btw, but I have my own head-canons :-) ). tauriel, sweetie. You have a good point but threatening regicide is not the way to get this done. i know you're young and reckless but seriously.they would probs have killed you. TL;DR I agree with you, PJ could have done SO MUCH MORE and it's frustrating. it also could have been SO MUCH WORSE.

Sidenote: Epic Galadriel sort of made up for it. I cheered.
