your xiao post randomly stumbled upon my tl so i wanted to share some insight on xiaos name and a correction :D

to preface this, among chinese media xiao's name symbolizes his duty to protect liyue and a reflection of his suffering & how it has honed him

魈 can be separated into the radicals 鬼 and 肖 (radicals are interesting to check out !!)

鬼 (guǐ) does mean ghost/spirit as a noun but can also mean stealthy/surreptitious as an adjective, it can additionally mean someone ignoble ! it is different from 贵 (guì), which means precious/expensive. since chinese has a limited number of sounds and is a logographic language, the same pinyin do not necessarily share meanings (i do like the idea but it wouldnt make much sense)

regarding 微, i think one word names are pretty rare considering almost all the liyuean characters have 2 word given names (excluding family name) 微微 is a more common name given name i think ! (贝微微 from a popular webnovel and series comes to mind) if you wish to look up an in-depth meaning to a name you can type "[name]名字含义"

Sorry this reply took a bit, I'm lazy lol. First of all, I was a little worried that I was overstepping as someone who isn't and doesn't know Chinese so I did try to make it clear that this could be inaccurate and hoped I was going about in a respectful manner, so I'm glad I was :]

I love linguistics and was actually hoping Chinese speakers would respond, so I will definitely look into radicals too! I'm also interested in more subtle differences like 2 words names vs 1 word names. Would 微微 mean small still or would it change to mean something like really small?

I figured it was about his commitment to Liyue before anything else, and anything close to small is a coincidence, though I think I may have a different thought as just a "demon", since I didn't know about the swift part, like he's been killing demons so long he's now inseparable from his duty, but I don't know.

For 贵/鬼, honest mistake, I know pinyins can be different but there are homonyms, at least that'd what I've been told, so I figured it was ghost and was another coincidence that didn't relate to him but was still cute.

Thank you for the tip too! It should make it easier and I am fascinated by names and how people name each other, especially Chinese because they seem to put a lot of thought into it, so I'll be sure to use it :D

I don't know any Chinese so huge disclaimer and feel free to correct me:

To my understanding Xiao as written in the game, 魈, comes from a group of demons in Chinese mythology and his means a kind of mountain demon, written with the characters for ghost or gui* and the character, 肖, for perish or disappear or, and the part I'm focusing on, little. And pronounced with a different tone, xiao can mean little.

*I don't know if gui is it's own character or just means precious/expensive, which is adorable if Zhongli gave him his name (edit: I was wrong, check amendment for explanation)

So I'm in love with the idea of Xiao having a daughter named 微 or Wei, which is a very common name with a lot of meaning, but this spelling means small.

Another name I like for his daughter is 冬梅/Dongmei, which means "Winter Plum" (with these characters at least)

There are two interpretations of Xiao's voiceline about eating snow; one that he wants to eat what is essentially an ancient way of eating ice cream/snow cones with plain snow being topped with fruits and syrup and the other is referring to hard times where people had to eat snow to try to keep off starvation. Which is probably a reference to the abuse Xiao faced under his old master.

So 冬梅 can be a very hopeful name, giving fruit in the uncaring winter, especially if the second meaning is correct. I think it would be a very loving name, calling her what would be his hope and relief in his life.

*I mixed up 鬼 (guǐ) and 贵 (guì). 贵 (guì) means precious/expensive and is different from 鬼 which can mean ghost, but as an adjective can mean stealthy/surreptitious and is the one actually used for Xiao. Which makes a lot more sense given Xiao is anemo/can teleport or something/ his whole kit.

They also explained that most Liyue characters have 2 words for names, so 微 (Wei) would be out of place and 微微 (Weiwei) would fit better and is more common anyway :]

Anon also suggested using 小梅 (Xiaomei) as a nickname for 冬梅 (Dongmei) which is so so cute.

The corniest shit would work on Denji. Imagine playing the “Counting Shoulders” game with him.

“Denji, you wanna play a game with me?”

“Uhh, Sure, what you wanna play?”

“Let’s count how many shoulders there are!”

‘That’s dumb as hell’ he thought to himself. “It’s four, I can count, y’know.” He’s a little offended, how dumb do you have to be not know? Is that you what you think of him? “I don’t know, let’s check.” Denji didn’t respond. You come over to him and sit on his right.

“One.” You place your hand on your right shoulder. “Two” you count your left. Denji stares at you blankly and bored. You turn to him and place your hand on his left shoulder, the one closest to you. “Three”. Pausing for a minute, you take a breath and gather your courage. You reach your arm behind Denji and hold Denji’s right shoulder. Before he can say anything, you pull him into your side, the two of you cuddling with your arm wrapped around him. “Four” you finish.

Denji looks back at you with his signature blue screen look when he’s thinking. The boy has an incredible way of keeping you on your toes. He’s so open and expressive, its one of things you love about him, but it makes you nervous in moments like this when he’s thinking. As the silence goes on, your anxiety grows with it. His face softens and immediately your uneasiness drains away in a second. “I like this game.” he decides, resting his head on you.

When he wants to cuddle, he asks if you two can count shoulders. It becomes one of the many ways he asks for your love in his quirky Denji ways.

Denji would play fuck marry kill with his classmate he has a crush on but put in Chainsaw Man as an option. He is doing his best to not take it personally if you say kill. He is failing. Very happy boy if you say marry. Very excited and starts blushing if you say fuck.

So the Jester is from Khaenri'ah and is the first of the harbringers,,, Now I'm really curious about him because everyone else related to Khaenri'ah either is indifferent or actively hates the Archons, but the Jester is the Tsarita right hand man. It's said that the Tsarita is doing it out of love and because she wants world peace. Is it because she saw what happened to Khaenri'ah? The wanderer also suggests that she's trying to make up for something. Could it be her role in destroying Khaenri'ah? The Jester sending a would-be God to the abyss which he has to know are his people.

And if thats why, who convinced who? Did the Tsarita, goddess of love, see the Jester and his people suffer and wanted to change that? Or is the Jester manipulating her?

Also, Diluc has meet and faced some of the harbringers before, does Kaeya know about the Jester? He isn't exactly keeping it a secret.

What if that's the end of Genshin? That the fatui are actually the good guys who care the most? Who saw the power of the Archons and saw how a few just throw that power aside for nothing? Who actually want peace? Hell, maybe with all the combined gnosises, they fight Celestia to free Teyvat from its reign.

Little Denji thought: You write something you love about him, a shared memory, some time he helped you or cheered you up, a general compliment about him and you put these little notes into a jar. Now whenever you two are apart or Denji's insecure, he goes to the jar and reads a note (or a dozen) and it always reassures him.

He melted when you explained the jar for the first time. He thought it was a little silly, but sweet all the same, and he tried to play it off but seeing you fill it more and more always moves him. He treassures every little scrap of paper now.

But also, hybrid dog Denji who also has a jar and his tail starts wagging like crazy when he sees you write a new note. Also hosting him his own dog shows where he wins every catergory and gets all the prizes!! He is the reigning Best Cuddler in the universe right now!!

Stolen Kisses

A short, fluffy fic about blowing kisses to Denji. Gender neutral reader.

Leaving the Public Safety office, just before you reach the door, you stop and turn to your colleagues, Power and Denji. You say a quick goodbye to Power and she responds in some flamboyant and patronising way that is impossible to actually get mad at. Then you look at Denji, you two aren’t on the same squad but you have worked together in the office for a few months now, and you find yourself getting closer and closer to the boy. You find him endearing, with how calm and quiet he seems just for that image to come undone the moment he opens his mouth, saying something vulgar or lashing out at someone, usually Power or Aki. But he’s always sweet to you, though he is often crass, it adds to his charm, his unbridled thoughts are refreshing and make you laugh. Shortly after knowing him, you found out that he can easily be bribed into anything for two things, food and affection. Denji is just so cute and dear to you that you often give him both without prejudice to his behaviour, much to the annoyance of Aki who scolds you for spoiling him. 

Denji stares at you, waiting patiently, expecting a new habit of yours. Every day when you leave, you blow a kiss to Denji. It wasn’t super intimate, you were across the room after all, but Denji treasures it all the same. How could he not? Even a make-believe kiss from a cutie like you is precious. 

“Bye Denji, I’ll see you tomorrow!” with those words you kissed your hand and blew it towards Denji. Waiting a few seconds for the kiss to float towards him, he then eagerly catches it in his hand and holds it to his chest.

“No, I did.”

“Mortals truly are senseless, if you caught it, why is there nothing in your hands?”

“The kiss is invisible but I can tell I caught it!”

“Invisible?” Power asked, genuinely curious. She hadn’t considered that it might be invisible, but it made sense. After all, what does a kiss look like? She’s only seen it when humans actually kissed each other, not when blown across the room. 

“Yeah! I can tell because my hand feels different!” Denji argued back. 

“Different?”

“Yep! It feels all tingly and warm and then when I press my hand against something after, that gets warm and my hand goes back to normal!”

“How curious,,,” Power trailed off, intrigued by the supposed effects of an unseeable kiss. Denji nodded, glad to have won an argument against Power and still riding the high from your kiss. The door opening grabs the fiends' attention, Aki had come in and told them that they had a new mission.  The topic dropped and was almost forgotten by Denji, but Power had other plans. 

The next day, as usual, you’re saying goodbye to the two. You kiss your hand and blow straight on the path to Denji. His hand is open and ready, but right before the kiss lands, a hand appears in front of his own and snatches it up. “What the hell?” Denji looks up and sees Power inspecting her closed first, her other hand relaxing on her hip. “Hey, it really does feel different!” 

“That’s mine!” Power maybe be known to have sticky fingers, but he never expected this,,, this,,, this,,, betrayal. “Give it back!” he demands. 

“No way! It does actually feel pleasant.” Denji shouts her name at her, showing his growing frustration in his angry tone. “I caught it, so it’s mine now! If you really wanted it, you should have caught it” “I was going to but you snuck up on me! Hand it over right now!”

“Indeed, I am very clever and stealthy. Now the kiss belongs to Power!”

“That’s not true! If you don’t give it to me, I’ll tell Aki!”

“Lies, topknot won’t care”

“Yeah, he will! And I’ll tell him about everything you’ve ever done! I’ve kept quiet about so much that you steal and bite and eat!” Power began to look a little anxious. “Yeah, and I’ll tell him about the nice knives you broke and that you ate the newspaper today and that’s why he couldn’t read it this morning!” Denji approaches Power, closing in on her till he’s right in front of her. 

“Fine then mortal, we shall wrestle to decide who the kiss belongs to! Prepare yourself human, you are about to become my prey!”

“Works for me.” Denji accepts without a second thought and the two began to wrestle, hands on the other’s shoulders pushing them back. The two are so absorbed in their dispute, neither noticed your quiet laugh at their antics. You calmly stroll towards Denji and call his attention. He looks at you, somehow surprised that you’re there, and they stop shoving each other, but neither gives up their hold. “Let it go Denji, it doesn’t matter.” you comfort the upset man. Power cackles in the back. 

“What? No way. It’s too precious to just give up!”

“Precious you say? I’m flattered” 

Denji nods, “It’s the most important thing in the world!”

“You’re so sweet Denji. I should give you something for your effort. Something better.”

Denji is confused, “What could be better than your kisses?” In his daze, you made your move, leaning into him and kissing his cheek. He shoots up and lets go of Power, his mind racing to understand what you did. He’s still for a few more moments before he melts and makes a little sound of joy “Heh”. Smiling he tells Power she can keep the kiss, who gloats about her victorious match. His attention turns fully to you now. “Can I have another? I didn’t get the first kiss so I should get two to make up for it!” he pleads. You oblige him as you always do and just like that, you and Denji have a new routine.

Stay at Home! Denji has one of those toddler stools that lets your kid help at the counter and if he’s cooking your kid is there too! He doesn’t let them near the stove or handle a knife, but he loves having them help by putting in stuff or washing vegetables.

If they’re even younger, he’ll put their highchair in the centre of the kitchen so he can play and cook. Denji doesn’t care if it’s inconvenient or how much he has to go around them. He 1000% feeds them little snacks like giving them some fruit he’s using to make a fruit salad or some cheese. His heart soars seeing their little hands grip it and their chubby cheeks getting even chubbier!

He holds your toddler like how he use to cuddle Pochita, but once the little guy pulled the cord, so now he tapes it down under his shirt before he cuddles them. Loves napping with them on his chest.

One day it hits him that your kid is closer to his age when he was orphaned than he is now. Denji needs you to hold him after that, he realises how young and vulnerable he was and how bad it really was. He is determined to make sure his kids never have to live like he did, that they are always feed and warm and safe and loved. 

Will never yell at your child. He’ll be stubborn about their safety (makes sure they’re wearing a sweater or hold his hand outside) but he doesn’t yell. Deadass will argue with your toddler about eating their vegetables with a face like >:[ tho.

“You need to eat your veggies to be healthy and strong. It has necessary vitamins for you. >:[”

“No”

“Don’t waste food. Farmers worked hard for you. >>:[”

“Gaah!”

He studies a lot harder when he becomes a dad. He wants to read and try new recipes, help the kids with their homework, read to them at night, read warning labels, etc.

Praise him lots for taking such good care of your kids, he loves it and them and you, but please remind him that he’s doing a good job, that you love him. Spoil him lots for his hard work, okay?
