I headcanon that after spending 10 years apart Edward would have separation issues regarding Oswald, like they're always together. Like shoulders together or holding hands. Like I'd go as far as Ed being annoying and insufferable when held in police interrogation until they bring Oswald in. I rest my case.

Ed’s red tie in 3x14 is so interesting to me because it’s literally the exact opposite of his usual colour and it shows up at the point just before he really commits to green (we see him wear green earlier on of course but it was always a lot more subtle). The fact that he hadn’t really worn much green in the show at this point does nothing to abate the fact that the audience KNOWS that his colour is green and thus him wearing any amount of red would be a surprise. It creates a feeling that something isn’t quite right, that perhaps he doesn’t quite feel himself - something he states himself within the episode. The colour red itself also has many associations, anger and love being two of the most prominent ones. Ed’s conflicted feelings of anger towards Oswald for killing his girlfriend and love towards him (more on that in a sec) are both incapsulated in one colour.

The other most prominent use of red in the episode is during the wake up alone scene. The bright red lighting that colours everything except Oswald himself, who is coloured by a bright white light, in contrast to Ed who is illuminated in the same red that seems to come from behind Oswald. This reminds me of Oswald’s line “you cannot have one without the other.” as both are seemingly incomplete without the other as Oswald’s background isn’t whole without the red light that covers Ed and Ed’s background isn’t complete without the white light that covers Oswald. I believe the actual content of that scene to be pretty clear, Ed is evidently trying to deny his feelings to Oswald and it manifests as a hallucination which tries to seduce him. This is also the first scene in that episode where he isn’t wearing the red tie and is instead wearing a green one. This could show that even when Ed is trying to force himself to move on from Oswald, he just can’t let him go.
