Reiner wakes up to a familiar tangle of limbs entertaining with his own. He grunts as he realizes he’s on his back with his gangly lover sprawled out on top of him. Reiner can feel Bertholdt stir. He wraps his arms around the taller man as best he can. Reiner doesn’t worry about waking Bertholdt up, he knows there could be an earthquake right now and he would sleep right through.
Reiner runs his fingers through the mop of black hair currently snoring softly on his chest. It’s not quite dawn yet, but Reiner can tell sunrise is close. He shuts his eyes and tries his best to think. Days have been blending together for him lately, and it’s been hard for him to differentiate his dreams from reality. It’s also been hard for him to differentiate his life as a warrior from his life as a scout. He tries to remember the night before. Did they fall asleep like this? They really try not to do that too often. Bertholdt must have crawled into his bed while he was sleeping, something he’s made a habit of doing more often these past few months.
Suddenly Bertholdt’s open hand is making a beeline for Reiner’s face, and he barely catches it before it makes contact with his nose. Bertholdt continues to stretch, clearly half awake, “Rei?” he asks, his voice raspy with sleep.
“Yes Bertl?” Reiner chuckles, releasing his hand from his grasp. Bertholdt raises his head from where it’s resting place on Reiner’s chest. He blushes as he sees his lover smiling down at him.
“It was cold last night,” Bertholdt whispers sheepishly, embarrassed to admit he had missed Reiner and couldn’t go to sleep.
The blonde laughs, bringing one hand to cup Bertholdt’s face, “You don’t have to make an excuse to spend the night with me Bertl. I think everyone knows we’re together by now.” Bertholdt melts into Reiner’s touch, looking up at him with loving eyes.
It has been nine long months of training, and they had quickly learned that privacy was hard to come by in the 104th. When they first became cadets they thought it would be best to hide their relationship. By that point they had only been officially dating for a few months. Reiner wishes he had said something sooner, now that he knew that they had both harbored feelings for each other for a while before they actually got together.
Because their relationship was so new they were still trying to figure things out, and how much they were comfortable sharing their new found love with others. On top of that, Annie insisted that being open about their relationship could blow their cover. She told them the three of them should act like they don’t know each other. Like that was ever going to happen.
Reiner uses his hand on Bertholdt’s cheek to pull him into a soft kiss. It was hard enough to pretend they weren’t together, he knows it would have been impossible for him to act like he didn’t know his Bertl.
Bertholdt blushes and pulls away, peaking outside the bunk to see if anyone else is awake. From this angle all he can see is Connie in the next bunk over, sleeping peacefully. Satisfied that no one’s watching, he returns to his spot laying on top of his lover.
“Sorry, I know everyone knows, I just get embarrassed I guess…” he says, laying his head on Reiner again. It wasn’t a secret that Bertholdt loved Reiners strong chest. It made him feel safe.
Reiner chuckles and wraps muscled arms around Bertholdt, “you’re cute when you’re embarrassed.” Bertholdt buries his face in Reiner’s chest. “Shut up…” he grumbles, no venom behind his words.
Reiner just laughs. After a while he can feel Bertholdt relax in his arms. The taller man hears birds chirping outside and groans against Reiner’s chest, “I really don’t wanna get up Rei…”
Reiner carefully leans his head out of the bunk to look at the clock on the opposite wall. “There’s still about an hour until breakfast, and an hour and a half ‘til call time,” beginning to play with Bertholdt’s hair again. “Just rest baby…” he whispers before realizing that Bertholdt’s breathing had already evened out as he’s fallen back to sleep.
Reiner smiles softly before closing his own eyes. Usually he finds it difficult to fall asleep, but with Bertholdt in his arms it was almost hard for him not to. Bertholdt was his rock. His tether to reality. His everything. for the first time in a while, Reiner falls asleep with a smile on his face.
I feel like authors gotta stop tagging barely touched upon ships in their fics, literally everything on the Reibert tag is other pairs as the main ship with like no Reibert at all. I’m super salty about this if you couldn’t tell
any girls ever felt like they want to be a boy but is also absolutely okay with being a girl and doesn't really care if people used "she/her" pronouns but also still want to dress masculine and want people to think that you're a boy and also you resonate with transgender media strongly but like you're also still okay with being a girl or is it just me
