Ribes sanguineum (flowering red currant)
Flowering red currant was first ‘discovered’ by the botanist/explorer David Douglas during his travels on the West Coast of North America. When it arrived in Britain in 1826 it was an immediate gardening sensation and is now grown in temperate climates all over the world. This lovely shrub grows in the wild throughout the Greater Vancouver Area and I had no problem finding a specimen to photograph.
Incidentally, It’s easy taking beautiful photographs of Ribes sanguineum. Flowering red currant is already beautiful and, strictly speaking, all the photographer needs to be is ‘technically competent’.
Chaenomeles japonica (Japanese quince)
It wouldn’t be spring without the Japanese quince in our back garden putting on a show. Seven days ago, the weather department predicted a week of heavy rain but it’s actually been quite sunny. I’d love to work in the weather department. It would seem that you can get the long-range forecast wrong fifty percent of the time and still never have to worry about losing your job.
