Am I ready? Far from it, but the New Year's at hand and there's nothing I can do to stop time. I've lived to see another turn of the year. I've experienced much happiness, sadness, pain, loss, temptayions, and challenges. But I was also showered with grave, love, support and provision. There are a lot of things that happened which I never imagined would happen. There are a lot of unexpected things too. However, 2015 for me was a blur. It passed like the wind. Maybe because I have become too unattached. Here's to the past. Here's to 2015.

It’s when you

become more considerate of others

no longer always put yourself on top priority

no longer post everything that’s happening to you on social media

know how to properly allocate your time and money

learn to forgive and let go of past offenses

are more patient in dealing with difficult people and circumstances

look for ways to fix a problem, rather than start the blame game

are not afraid to ask for help or guidance from those with more wisdom

are not too proud to accept suggestions and corrections

stop feeding the green monster in your heart and start being thankful for what you have or where you are right now

know when to fight and w

know there’s no more point in trying to be someone you’re not

make Him the center of your life because you know you are nothing without Him

Mathematics Education

A bit too deep all of a sudden, I know. But I attended an academic seminar as part of my internship duties and it got me thinking.

The seminar was organized by the National Institute for Science and Mathematics Education Development (NISMED), the institute I work for, and it was done in partnership with the University of Tsukuba’s Center for Research on International Cooperation in Educational Development (CRICED). It was basically about teaching educators how to deviate from the traditional rote teaching methods.

This is what I realized:

The main reason why the students are afraid of math, or a mentality that math is a hard subject is because the way it is being taught is very linear. This is the problem, these are the given, and this is how you solve it. Formulas, formulas, formulas. Memorization, memorization, memorization all the time. Rote learning. Some would call it traditional. I am not saying this is not the right way of teaching math. But there are better ways on how to do it. New, innovative methods that basically just comes from the creativity and better judgement of the teacher.

The question that came up was, why are teachers not deviating from the traditional teaching. I discovered this is because they are scared, and probably unequipped to do so.

To be able to improvise teaching math, the educator must be very proficient in the subject. He must know the subject by heart, and not just by memorization to be able to devise new techniques to help the students understand math more and love the subject.

Guest professors from Japan demonstrated how math is just about patterns and basically just logic. I realized math is not hard. Math actually stimulates your creative thinking. There’re more ways to solve a problem than just by formulas. Math is fun.

I wish I was able to attend this seminar during my formative years. I wish my math teachers were able to attend the seminar. I wish my teacher attended the seminar.

I personally think that a more innovative way of teaching that induces the learner’s creative thinking is ore effective than trying to punch in the information on their heads.

Incredible lack of character

It was rainy. The bus I was on was full, I was already standing and I had many luggage. Majority of the people in the bus I was in were fellow UPLB students.

I am not ranting about the males not letting me sit instead, I’m also a feminist, I believe in gender equality. But it just makes me think about what happened to the maginoo (gentleman) quality of the Pinoys.

Then a pregnant lady boarded, with lots of luggage as well. And, guess what, no one gave up their seat for her. I mean, really? If I wasn’t already standing, I would give up my seat for her. To make it worse, like I said, the bus was filled with UP students. What happened to the Iskolar ng bayan, para sa bayan? Is that just a tagline? Does that mean nothing? No, let’s make it simpler, is it not basic and given decorum to give up your seat to someone who needs it more? Not just for guys, but also for girls. In the end, the pregnant lady just got off the bus.

I am disappointed not just as my schoolmates, but also on the driver and conductor of the bus. They could have discouraged the lady to get on the bus in the first place, or they could have reminded someone to give her a seat.

This is a small thing, but it reflects the state our country is in. It seems like not only are we economically poor, but we also suffer from lack of character. Please. Yes, life is hard, but it doesn’t mean that you can let go of your good manners. Social status must not be a hindrance to doing good. We are all equal, living, suffering, and wanting a little bit of comfort. Will a little act of kindness hurt you? I don’t think so.
