Blackwater Dive

2024, hand bleached and dyed denim, cotton batting and thread

inspired by blackwater photography of plankton! this was my first time layering bleach painting. All the silhouettes were painted with bleaching gel, loosely tie dyed, and then bleached again to make the highlights. I quilted the piece using my free motion foot to outline each individual animal and tacked down the rest of the quilt with small satin stitches that remind me of marine snow. I dyed bias tape to match. super happy with this one and excited to show it in a gallery setting soon!

This is a tangent, but during the Olympics, NPR had an article about how, in what is tragically a major shift (because how was shit this fucked up before?), lots of women track athletes have begun focusing on getting adequate nutrition and actually nourishing their bodies instead of trying to be unhealthily thin, which is what a lot of coaches had pushed for before, because they conflated thinness with performance.

And it just made think, how much of the difference between men's and women's althetic performance at the elite level is because elite women athletes have been pressured for a long time, by the very people tasked with helping them be their best, to NOT FUCKIN' FUEL THEIR BODIES?

Like, let's see how fast Noah Lyles runs if he doesn't. fucking. EAT. Let's see how great Mbappe or Messi are at soccer if they're put on a starvation diet. Let's see how NFL quarterbacks throw and run and dodge tackles when coaches push them to restrict their caloric intake to the point where they can't maintain a healthy weight.
