STAYING THE NIGHT PROMPTS
â donât be ridiculous, thereâs enough room on this bed for both of us. âÂ
â please stay. i donât think i can be alone tonight. â
â iâm staying, okay? you donât have to be alone tonight. â
â you shouldnât be alone right now. iâll take the couch, itâll be fine. â
â will you sleep with me? i know how that sounds i just meanâ i feel safe when youâre there. â
â iâll be here the whole night okay? nothing will get to you while iâm here. â
â waitâ have you been here all night? â
â i thought you went home after i went to bed. you didnât have to do thatâ you couldâve at least joined me in bed that couch is shit for sleeping on. â
â can i stay with you tonight? i donât wanna go home yet. â
â itâs late, you might as well just stay here. â
â can you justâŠstay here? and hold me. â
â i know this might sound weird but, do you wanna stay over? i guess âsleepoverâ sounds kind of childish but. i think itâd be nice. â
â iâm not expecting anything, i just, thought itâd be nice to keep you company tonight. â
â i donât have nightmares when youâre there. â
â i get youâre doing the whole protective thingâ and i appreciate it. i do, but thereâs no reason for you to stay awake all night. might as well come to bed. â
â thank you for staying. it just gets so lonely at night sometimes. â
â i donât want you to be alone tonight and honestly, i donât really wanna be alone either. â
â do you wanna stay with me tonight? â
â stay, please. â
â iâll stay. â
â iâm staying. â
â iâm staying. end of discussion. you gotta learn to let people take care of you. â
â iâm not ready to say goodbye yet. â
â i donât wanna have to say goodnight. â
â honestly i canât sleep, so if you wanna stay up with me? â
â i donât sleep a lot either these days. we can be insomniacs together. â
â well, i can think of some ways to wear you out. â
â if you canât sleep, there are other things we could do. â
â iâd rather fuck than stare at the ceiling counting sheep to be honest. â
â it doesnât have to mean anything, i just donât wanna feel lonely tonight. and i want to feel good for once. â
â please donât goâ i need. i need someoneâ i need you. â
â the night doesnât have to end here, you know. â
â i like it when youâre here. so stay. please? â
â youâre just as lonely as i am. might as well be lonely together. â
â you can stay but iâm not letting you sleep on that couch. â
â chivalry is overrated, get in my bed. â
â youâre clearly exhausted. you can go in the morning. â
â you donât have to pretend to be fine, if you need me to stay i will. â
â when i said i wanted everyone to leave me alone i didnât mean you. i canât handle everyone else right now but youâŠyouâre different. â
â you need someone right now. and iâm the one thatâs here. let me be what you need. â

âPut me down, I can walk!â from feuilly for grantaire
"Mm? I can't hear you from back there." Grantaire had caught Feuilly limping and lifted him over his shoulder in a fireman's carry. "Thing is, while we need numbers and people, we need those people to be able to march should we decide to." He rested his hand on the small of Feuilly's back and shifted his weight carefully, before carrying him elsewhere. "You told us you were fine after your slip on the ice." He sat him on a nearby bench and crouched in front of him, blocking his way to getting back up immediately.
"Feu, if you don't take care of yourself first then the people will have no one to speak for them." He rolled up his jeans and Grantaire winced at the sight of his ankle, "Looks like I am going to be picking you up again." It was badly bruised, swollen, Grantaire was - for once - in a clear headspace to deal with it. "You need to rest it." He grunted, digging in his bag for a first aid kit, he was bound to have something supportive in there, maybe an ice pack. "If you don't rest, it will get worse and you will need surgery or a cane or will just be in pain, do you want that?" He asked, looking up at Feuilly from where he knelt at his ankle. "I'm going to wrap it with ice and take you home, okay?"
âIâm n-not drunk, I only had a couple of drinks.â from joly for jehan
"Oh, I know mon ami, just it is closing time so I have to take you home." He chuckled at Joly's antics and gave a wave to the people behind the bar, pulling Joly's arm around his shoulder and putting his own around his friend's waist, "Tell me about the bones in the body as we walk, mm? Keep yourself conscious so I only have to walk for one and a half of us."
He quite enjoyed taking care of people, so he really didn't mind his friend being so messy, he was sure he had had his turns too. He started walking Joly to his apartment - it was closer - and chattering away to him as they went, keeping his arm firmly wrapped around his friend. After a while of letting Joly walk him through the anatomy of a human skeleton, Jehan gave a bright smile and shook his head fondly, occasionally asking questions to keep him on track, "How many bones in one hand?", "Whats this one here?", "If babies have more bones than adults where do the bones go?"
Keeping his friend occupied all so they could reach his door without fuss. Jehan got him inside and helped Joly up to his flat, taking off his shoes and jacket for him once they were inside.
33. Mun chooses (joly & R?)
In the dark of his flat, Grantaire sat stewing, his nose bleeding and a bruise swelling under his eye. He took a long sip from a glass of some mix of liquid and groaned as he rested back into his sofa - his ribs were aching. The lights were off, the shutters closed as the sun struggled to peek through the gaps and though he had heard knocking at the door, like hell if he was going to even try to stand up and answer it. If it was someone who cared they would have a key.
He heard the familiar sound of Joly announcing he was letting himself in and then the key in the door. "I have only been missing for three days, this is hardly a record." He turned his gaze to his friend as he entered, "I'm fine, Joly, go home, don't waste your time." He winced as he sat up and his hand moved to his ribs again.
He could barely recall the little stint he had been having, but he could remember being cornered by someone who didn't find his quips and comebacks all that charming, he could remember countless drinks. He looked up as Joly approached, wiping the blood from his face with his sleeve, "Did you draw the shortest straw and have to come check on me? I am terribly sorry about all the stairs."

âI am not sure, you could very well be a charlatan in a very good disguise.â He chuckled as he saw the other man become immediately distracted and flushed in the face, offering his arm to help Joly into the fiacre, before climbing in after him.
He smiled at Jolyâs mutterings and shook his head fondly at the man, âNow, now, mon ami. I know you are a highly professional physician and you will recall you did the same when we were drinking one night, the effects on the body after one glass of wine, two, three⊠and so on.â He reached out to hold Jolyâs hand as the thunder rumbled.
âIt is a poetic way to look at it, donât you think? You may say unscientific but I have another word for it.â He leaned in and gave a playful smile, âDonât let your other science lovers hear this but, I think you may be creative.â Jehan chuckled and leaned back, âI think it is simply a build up of energy, someone, somewhere got too angry and their wrath is raining down on us.â
He sat comfortably after a pause and closed his eyes, listening to the heavy rain pound at the roof of the fiacre, and to Jolyâs heavier breathing, giving his hand a little squeeze, âWe will be safely inside soon, mon ami.â
âYou know me, Prouvaire, you know that I am not,â he insisted. They walked with their arms hooked at their sides, nearing his building. Brows rose on his forehead, the stirrings of a forgotten memory rearranging itself. He remembered that night, how he went from friend to friend, how he continued insisting they all notified him each time they poured another glass (he was not sure that all of them did). âOh! Yes, I did.â He spoke, nodding his head. âI remember. Well, some of it, I think I kept in pace with everyone. Perhaps research is better conducted sober.â Such a wild thought.
He pushed open the door to his building and lead Prouvaire up the stairs to his apartment. They could be difficult some days but they werenât as steep as the ones at the Musain, at least. When he reached the top, he let himself catch his breath before unlocking his flat and going to a shelf.
âAll children are creative, the skill is in maintaining that. You have that gift, not I.â Unless his scientific theories could be called creative but Joly would argue that they were not; they were the pursuit of knowledge, purely logical, nothing more.
âAh! Here.â He pulled an old journal from the shelves and flipped through the pages, grinning all the while. âI found my notes from that night. My handwriting is awful! Can you read it? It starts legible but quickly devolves.â
"And do you know me well enough to say the same, m'sieur Joly?" He asked in a playful tone, holding on to Joly's arm as rain once again soaked their hair and clothes, before continuing, "I believe research is better conducted sober but it was a celebration so, I think it was fair." He hummed. As they got inside the building, Jehan released Joly's arm as they got to the narrow stairs, they had walked quite a bit today so he stepped back to allow Joly to take his time getting up the stairs, in no rush himself.
He followed Joly inside his flat, closing the door and removing his boots and coat, "It took me to time, nor skill to maintain my sense of creativity, just a lot of note taking and scribbling of thought." He smiled at the other man's compliment, and made about finding dry clothes for Joly to change as he had become immediately distracted by his notes.
He moved to his friend's side and held out a hand, "Your coat, m'sieur? I'll hang it to dry." He didn't want to give Joly a chance to get sick from the cold rain. "I will read it aloud to you as you change, mm?" He smiled and carefully took the book from his friend, chuckling as he saw many a wine spill on flipping through the pages, and swapping the book for some dry clothes.
"My, it is true what they say about doctors handwriting." He teased as he looked through the pages again starting very focused and professional and descending into chaos, "I think this is an excellent study on how wine influences the ability of a physician to conduct a study." He spoke absently, "'Prouvaire: 5'6, 19, male... First glass: temperature unchanged, reaction times normal...' oh, my heartrate slowed a little that's probably relevant." He chattered his way through Joly's findings for a few minutes, pausing to comment occasionally, "Oh goodness, I thought I was beating Grantaire that night he had double what he told me he had."
He set the notebook down on the nearest surface and took off his vest, pushing soaked hair from his face and tying it back with a short length of ribbon, "I think the storm is getting heavier, we made perfect time."

Jehan scooted closer to Feuilly as the blanket was draped over them both, âNext time I should host, to be polite. And to bother my roommate instead.â He hummed, turning his head to look at Feuilly, âI have a wide variety of teas at home, mostly sleepy ones thoughâŠâ He paused and then gave him a little smile before laughing as Feuilly bumped his shoulder.
He nodded his head, laughing, âEndless loops are scary, youâre right!â He placed his hands on his cheeks, feigning surprise, âHow do we do this without the endless loop? A taxi, I suppose.â He smiled, âHow do I give you a bag and avoid an endless loop, though?â He asked, though there was the obvious option of inviting him to stay the night, it seemed silly, to Jehan, to hang out at Feuillyâs place then have Feuilly come stag at his, though at least there they could have more privacy.
âOui. It was a zombie, teen, Christmas musical. I forget what it was called.â He shrugged, âBut it certainly was unexpected, and not actually scary. What would very scary would be if you had me sing to you right now.â He adjusted his position so he could rest his head on Feuillyâs shoulder, âWe can watch the scary movie, the one from the trailer.â He pointed, âAnd next will be a musical. One we both know so we can do a duet.â
He took a piece of popcorn and pressed to start the movie, âWas that a challenge, m'sieur?â He asked, before smiling as Feuilly suggested he would be a worse singer than Prouvaire. âI doubt it, I am more of a instrumentalist than a vocalist.â
Feuilly smiled and rolled his shoulders. âA taxi seems wise, as long as this movie doesnât have any scary car scenes. Then that just wouldnât do.â He was tempted to take the joke further but refrained. He could walk Jehan home to get the bag, spooked or not, and he wasnât intending to invite himself over. âIâm sure weâll figure it out.â
There was a pause then as the move started. Feuilly rested his back against the wall behind them, curling his legs in as it started. There was one benefit to watching this on a tiny laptop; it was hard to get immersed in the horror of it all, especially with all the spam email notifications he kept having to ex out of. He needed to clean out his inbox.
He laughed then and wriggled his eyebrows. âA duet! Perfect. I vote for a villain and hero one, that way I can chase you around the room. Iâm the villain, Iâm very fast.â He was grinning as he reached for another handful of popcorn. âOh! Sh, shush, the opening credits are over. Is that a demon?â He leaned in, as if to get a closer look but it was just a shadow, one that nearly jump scared him. âI guess itâs got to build up to the horror first.â He mused, leaning back once more.
This felt like a date, he was realizing. Cozied up and on his bed no less, watching a horror movie, sharing a blanket. He didnât tend to get nervous about such things and he wasnât now, it was the uncertainty that bugged him. He sighed eyed Prouvaire as he pondered this conundrum, not at all subtle. It was then that a real jump scare occured. Feuilly yelped, jumping where he sat. He hadnât even been paying attention but it was the sound, it got him. At least now that his heart was racing he wasnât focused on that conundrum anymore.
âI hate jump scares, what happened? I wasnât watching.â He looked towards Prouvaire again. âDonât make me rewind, Iâll react the exact same, I swear.â
"I'm sure we will." He smiled as Feuilly settled to watch the movie, or rather settled to chat through the start of the movie, finding himself chuckling quietly and feeling comforted at his apparent lack of focus. Provaire tended to find some horror films a little predictable, he could usually tell when the beat was coming, could steel himself for the jumpscare, it was after the movie he would find himself looking over his shoulder or having vivid dreams.
He was distracted mildly at this moment so perhaps would come in a little more lucky today, he turned his attention to Feuilly for a moment and hummed quietly, "A demon for the very first shot of this movie would be a bold choice." He said softly, shifting to get a little more comfortable.
He noticed Feuilly go quiet for a moment and could feel his eyes on him, Jehan moved a hand to fix his hair awkwardly and - distracted as he was - was jumpscared by Feuilly being scared of the jumpscare in the movie. He laughed and rested a hand to his chest, shaking his head a little as his heart raced, "A balloon popped! Mon ami, you scared me!" He swatted Feuilly's arm gently and laughed, "A balloon and a face in the mirror."
He curled himself in to Feuilly's side and shook his head fondly at the other man, "What if there is a twist at the end and it has been the wife being the 'ghost' the whole time?' He asked with a little chuckle, "Or they wake up and it was all a dream... or was it?"
@softyetintrepidâ continued from here.
Grantaire pulled on the front of his jacket, wrapping it tighter around himself as he walked, cold breath visible in the air. He gave a shudder in the chill and looked around, deciding to opt for a short cut to get him out of the cold faster. Walking through the gates of the graveyard, he shoved his hands in his pockets and walked.
After a minute or so, however, he found himself dawdling, stopping to read some of the older looking stones and then moving on. He was there for a few minutes until he spotted anyone else, blinking as it was even someone he recognised.
âFeuilly?â He weaved between large stones to reach the man who seemed to be doing a little maintainence, tidying around a smaller marble stone. Shit, this is probably private time. He was frozen for a moment before he came to the manâs side, crouching with him and pulling away at some overgrown grass. âBonjour, do you mind me being here?â
He didnât visit often, once a year if even that but every now and again it was nice to check in. When he went he tidied up, pulled weeds out from around the stones and placed rocks on top. When he was younger, still a teenager, he tried talking to them in the way heâd seen others speak to gravestones but it felt forced, awkward, and so he was quiet. Instead, he just reminisced. Why he went that day was by chance alone; like Grantaire, he was in the area and decided to stop by.
Hearing his name pulled him from his thoughts and he looked over his shoulder, offered a smile to Grantaire. Paris was a big city, he hadnât expected to run into any friends there but he didnât mind that he did. Perhaps this should have been alone time but Feuilly didnât mind. He lost his parents a long time ago, it wasnât as difficult to be there anymore, and company didnât hurt. As private as he was, he never shied away. He kept a lot of his life to himself but not out of embarrassment, itâs just how he was; he didnât often talk about himself.
âHey,â he greeted, âI donât mind. I was just - Well.â It was obvious what he was doing, he shrugged. âAre you visiting someone?â He looked around, as if heâd be able to pick out the grave by sight alone before looking back to his friend. âI was going to go to the Corinthe after this.â
"'Well', indeed." Grantaire gave him a lopsided little smile, aware of his socially awkward action in approaching the man at a graveyard, but he didn't seem to mind so Grantaire was comfortable enough to join him for the moment.
"Taking a shortcut." He admitted to Feuilly's question, "I am a lazy, but efficient man." He hummed, "On my way to the Corinthe myself, a lucky coincidence." He scratched at the scruff of his beard and moved so he could clean up with Feuilly, pulling at weeds, "My father is elsewhere." He added as Feuilly looked around at the nearby stones, "Not that I would have reason to pay him a visit anyway. "
He sat quietly for a moment, thinking. It was quite peaceful for the moment though his fingertips were starting to ache and his cheeks were red from the cold, "You have your warm coat, oui? It feels like the weather is going to become more dreadful by the evening." Awkward weather small talk would get him through this. He looked to Feuilly and then to the gravestones, wondering if he could ask about them - or if Feuilly would have much to tell.

Jehan could sense Jolyâs nervousness, which truly wasnât an uncommon thing, but he was concerned for his friend, nonetheless, reaching out to squeeze his shoulder and nodding as he other expressed his hatred of the situation, or the storm - he truly wasnât sure which.
âIt is not ideal.â He nodded his head in agreement, âBut we will be indoors soon.â He watched Joly flinch at the thunder and moved to his side to put an arm around him, âOui, letâs see if we can find one.â
For a moment he forgot about his concern as Joly mentioned his experiment, âAs long as it is perfectly appropriate, m'sieur Joly, I am happy to let you study my body.â He teased as Joly stepped out to flag down the fiacre, Jehan stepped back into the rain and tipped his head back to let it fall on his face for the moment as he followed Joly.
âOf course itâs appropriate! Iâm a physician, not a charlatan. Iâd never abuse my position like that, science is ⊠Itâs very important.â Jolyâs cheeks had gone from pale with nerves to pink with embarrassment remarkably fast. Thank god the fiacre stopped, he would have continued rambling and defending himself and his honor as a physician for a while. Flustered as he was, it was better than anxious; Prouvaire always knew how to distract him.
After giving the driver his address, Joly shuffled in, scooting down on the seat to make room for Jehan. âItâs perfectly appropriate,â he said, nearly grumbling, âIâll simply be taking your pulse, among other things, to record any changes after thereâs a clap of thunder or lightning nearby.â There was a wince then, another roll of thunder overhead. It wasnât as loud as the previous one but Joly was on edge, certain it was only predecessor to a louder, crueler boom. He waited for the other shoe to drop, shoulders raised as he warred between looking out the window and away from it; both were scary in their own way. Eventually, when more thunder didnât come, he relaxed again.
âYou know, I used to believe incredibly unscientific things about thunder and lightning.â Not that he didnât still but Joly would argue the contrary. âI thought horses lived in the sky and that their hooves made that sound, and when thunder was very loud, well, that was a cart tipping over, maybe it was crushing an angel and thatâs why there was lightning.â He blinked, cleared his throat. âOf course, I was very young, very little, thatâs why itâs so silly.â
"I am not sure, you could very well be a charlatan in a very good disguise." He chuckled as he saw the other man become immediately distracted and flushed in the face, offering his arm to help Joly into the fiacre, before climbing in after him.
He smiled at Joly's mutterings and shook his head fondly at the man, "Now, now, mon ami. I know you are a highly professional physician and you will recall you did the same when we were drinking one night, the effects on the body after one glass of wine, two, three... and so on." He reached out to hold Joly's hand as the thunder rumbled.
"It is a poetic way to look at it, don't you think? You may say unscientific but I have another word for it." He leaned in and gave a playful smile, "Don't let your other science lovers hear this but, I think you may be creative." Jehan chuckled and leaned back, "I think it is simply a build up of energy, someone, somewhere got too angry and their wrath is raining down on us."
He sat comfortably after a pause and closed his eyes, listening to the heavy rain pound at the roof of the fiacre, and to Joly's heavier breathing, giving his hand a little squeeze, "We will be safely inside soon, mon ami."
